In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
(Bloody, bloody)
(Ooh-ooh, ooh)
Love is just a history that they may prove
And when you're gone I'll tell them my religion's you
When Punktious comes to kill the king upon his throne
I'm ready for their stones
I'll dance, dance, dance
With my hands, hands, hands
Above my head, head, head
Like Jesus, said
I'm gonna dance, dance, dance
With my hands, hands
Hands above my head
Dance together
Forgive him before he's dead because
I won't cry for you
I won't crucify the things you do
I won't cry for you, see
When you're gone I'll still be Bloody Mary
We are not just art for Michelangelo
To carve, he can't rewrite the aggro of my furied
Heart, I'll wait on mountain tops in Paris cold
Je ne veux pas mourir toute seule
I'll dance, dance, dance

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.

Oh, Liberdade... Mi amor...
I thought this song was about 'bloody' Mary Tudor and her husband Philip II of Spain. She was a crazy Catholic, burning Protestants left right and centre, hence all the references to doing Jesus's bidding. Philip married her for the English crown and spent most of their marriage in Spain. However, poor Mary was deeply in love with him and all Philip's distaste towards her made her understandably very upset: therefore refusing to cry over him, reprimanding love, etc.
Probably the most correct, literal interpretations of the song. I agree to this response.<br /> <br /> Watch the video for further proof.
I think its about a lover whom she now hates and wises his death. And when he's dead she'll say she loved him. She know's you're expected to be good and forgiving and all that (like Jesus said), which she will be, but not without getting her vengeance (forgive him before he's dead). "We are not just art for Michelangelo to carve. He can't rewrite the agro of my furied heart." i.e. people are not beautiful sculptures, they're multi-dimensional, they have an ugly side, and hate is hate, it can't just be rewritten...
Makes sense. Not my favorite of the talented singer's (rather, performer's).
The first time I heard the title of this and the first time I listened to it my immediate reaction was to think of the legend of Bloody Mary (sorry if I'm about to creep people out haha), the demon-thingy-person that apparently kills you if you say her name 5 times in a mirror or some stupid shit like that. That was my first thought. I'm not even slightly religious, so I didn't really pay attention to the christian references. But if I'm putting that meaning on it the only real bit that I believe can reference it is the chorus~~
I won't cry for you I won't crucify the things you do I won't cry for you, see, When you're gone, I'll still be Bloody Mary.
She won't cry for them, because they called for her. She killed 'you', whoever 'you' is referenced to at the time, but she's going to continue killing people when they call for her, because it's what she does ;)
Was this anyone else's first thought when they first heard the song, or just the title?
I thought That Too but its about Bloody Mary but its about Mary magdalen (or something Like That) lol
When she says "Pontius," she's actually saying "Punk-tius." I thought it was clever.
And those first lyrics by jommy are /really/ wrong. xD
whats punk-tius?
She's actually saying 'punctures'.
'When punctures come to kill the king upon his throne'<br /> <br /> I think she's referring to the Crucifixion of Jesus.
Oh, I lied. xD<br /> I looked up the digital booklet. It's not Punk-tius, or punctures.<br /> It's Pontius.<br /> <br /> @Jabuleen<br /> I thought she was using a kind of word-play on a Christian reference, but I was wrong.
Actually, you are right. It is Punk-tius. You can clearly hear the K sound and she once tweeted the lyrics too, and she wrote Punk-tius. See the link below :)<br /> <br /> twitter.com/ladygaga/status/5782416190873600
I think the wordplay here is: Pontius killed the King (Jesus) upon his throne... "his" referring to Pontius, who, while on his throne killed Jesus (the King who could also be argued to have been on his own throne)..and then PUNK-tius killing the KING refers to punk music killing rock and roll (as in, Elvis, the King).. GaGa is making a side commentary to be playful in the song. Does that sound valid? Haha
This song is a very deep one for me. Gaga said in an interview that she is very intrigued by the whole persona of Mary Magdalene, so she involved her in many of the lyrics and symbolism in BTW. She also gave her initial idea in the same interview but I can't recall which one it was. So, here is what I could extract:
Artistically, the lyrics are very conceptual and meaningful. Of course, I may be missing something or putting too strong accent on something, which does not deserve it, but as a whole I think I managed to capture the main point.
I think the pre chorus is about giving up and accepting the fact that jesus is going to die in my opinion i see the dance as the act and the hands going up are the giving up and like jesus said being jesus telling her that he's not afraid to die and to give up, and the hands together are obviously a prayer ^_^ hope you like my views :D
The dance metaphor is certainly more than that. I think it's about faith/spirituality, in general, because she uses it in ScheiBe too.
what does it have to do with teeth??
I love Gaga’s music. It is truly genius. However, it is quite obvious that she and the rest of you are delusional. Gaga’s secret wish is death–just like all the rest of you religious hypocrites. Yes, it’s the hypocrisy that is tearing Gaga and for that matter you apart. She cannot do what Jesus did. None of you can. Just go and sacrifice your life away for killers. That is what your barefoot bum of a leader did (Or did he? You dopes were sold Plato’s great lie by a bunch of inbred Hyksos). Go and renounce this material world and run into the valley of the shadow of death and die. That is what you wish, isn’t it? Hitler once said that all you had to do was sell the masses an ideal they couldn’t attain and you had them–that you could sink your fingers right into their skulls and did what you wanted with them. Just remember how you felt after seeing the Passion of Christ. There is no better way to disarm someone than by guilt. Ask yourself why your country is falling apart. The very same people that sold you that lie are slowly destroying your once great nation. And Gaga is playing right into their hands.
I think it's not "Mary Magdalene", but actually Queen Mary I. (Mary Tudor). Great analyzation, though :)
Lady Gaga on her facebook: "BLOODY MARY is about living halfway between reality and fantasy."
I have to say this song scares the hell out of me, I love it, but the music just gives me shivers, and I hate the words 'bloody mary' aswell.
Oh also, this song is freakin' amazing in concert!! I saw her the other day. If any of you get the chance, you need to see her for the Born this Way ball tour :D
Teeth reference! :D
I love this one, one of about three surprisingly downtempo songs on BTW - also, one of a couple kinda religious ones. But it's Gaga, so she's singing from Mary Magdalene's POV. Which is a pretty fucking cool direction to go.
where's the teeth reference? o:
amazing i didnt realise the magdalene thing but its made the song even better for me thanx xxx
The reference is "my religion is you," though the phrase can be taken more literally here as she's referring to Jesus.
I wouldn't say it's a "reference" so much as a recurring theme.
She did the same thing in Judas. She was singing from Mary m's pov, at least i think so.
