So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
I've been waiting on the sunset
Bills on my mindset
I can get deny they're getting high
Higher than my income
My income's breadcrumbs
I've been trying to survive
On accumule les problèmes
Accuser la vie comme elle
Essaye d'ouvrir les yeux
Même si je suis là c'est
Ce n'est qu'un cap à passer
Demain tout ira mieux
Oh, you'll turn out fine fine
Oh, you'll turn out fine
But you gotta keep your head up, oh
And you can let your hair down, eh
You gotta keep your head up, oh
And you can let your hair down, eh
Il n'est jamais trop tard
Pour y croire
Et faire les bons choix
Commence par relever la tête, oh
Ne jamais baisser les bras
Eh, je n'ai pas le cœur à m'emballer
Faut pas s'laisser aller
Malgré les galères et les angoisses
Car j'ai l'moral à zéro
Ne pas envie d'en faire trop
J'attends toujours que le temps passe
I'm seeing all the angles, starts to get tangled
I start to compromise
My life and the purpose
Is it all worth it,
Am I gonna turn out fine?
Oh, you'll turn out fine
Fine, oh, you'll turn out fine
But you gotta keep your head up, oh
And you can let your hair down, eh
You gotta keep your head up, oh
And you can let your hair down, eh
Il n'est jamais trop tard
Pour y croire
Et faire les bons choix
Commence par relever la tête, oh
Ne jamais baisser les bras, eh
Only rainbows after rain
The sun will always come again
Its a circle, circling
Around again, it comes around again
Keep your head up, oh,
Lèves la tête
And you can let your hair down, eh
Et ne baisse jamais les bras
Keep your head up, oh
Lèves la tête
And you can let your hair down, eh
Et ne baisse pas les bras
Lèves la tête
Lèves la tête
Ne baisse jamais les bras
Ne baisse jamais les bras

Just two commnents? It may not be a musical masterpiece, but it's so upbeat and catchy. I love hearing this song on the car radio. I turn it up; snap my fingers; sway in my chair; and smile. (Yes, I get strange looks from other drivers but thankully I could care less; they will not be allowed to ruin my good time.) This song simply has a great message: life is full of ups and downs, but it's how you handle those down times that defines who you are. Gotta keep smiling and plugging away at moving forward...
I do the same thing in the car, and also when i'm sitting listening to it on the comp. =)
