If I never get back home
There's no garden on the ground
No widows at the wall
No widows left at all

No shirts that I will fold
No kid I want to hold
No widows at the wall
No widows on the phone

If I'm stuck out here alone
If I'm stranded here all weird
Just nothing left at home
No widows disappear

If the wheels jump off the road
There's no widows left to know
No perfect love will grow
There's no punishment below

When they shake
Say the wings won't hurt
When they shake
Say the wings won't hurt

If I'm stuck out here alone
If I'm stranded here all weird
Just nothing left at home
No widows disappear

If the wheels jump off the road
There's no widows left to know
No perfect love will grow
There's no punishment below

When they shake
Say the wings won't hurt
When they shake
Say the wings won't hurt

General Comment:The lyrics posted here (as of today) are very inaccurate. I tried to post a correction but apparently the rights holder needs to approve them.

There is now a version made by Brent Arnold with only cellos and vocals which is immensely beautiful. You can find here: soundcloud.com/…

General Comment:I agree with amobishoproden's reading.

life seems pointless but within the pointlessness, there is no responsibilities, no obligations, no guilt.

he is removed from life, but free enough not to be shackled by it.

General Comment:I think it's about staying alone to avoid the struggles and pain of a dying relationship. By not loving anyone, he is ensuring that no one will be hurt, or "widowed" by him, and likewise he can not be hurt by anyone.

General Comment:definitely about contemplating suicide due to the pointlessness and loneliness he feels that his life embodies.

are these songs all supposed to tell a story the way Hospice did? does anyone know?

General Comment:in addition to my previous comment,
`If I'm stuck out here alone
If I'm stranded here all year
With just nothing left at home
    No widows disappear`

who cares if i fail, or left alone, who is waiting for me back, who will be sad.

General Comment:I agree with you about the song being about loneliness and feeling like you're leaving nothing behind. I do however disagree with the idea that because there is no heaven or hell he has nothing left to live for. If the man is a soldier "stranded out alone all year" with no heaven or hell, the main word here is pointlessness. The pointlessness of war. But not of living. The war in Iraq and Afghanistan has in Europe been portraid not only as a pointless war, but also as a boring one, which I believe this song captures. Just my interpretation.

General Comment:After Hospice I was scared to listen to anything else by The Antlers...
As i knew nothing could compare...

    And then they create THIS...
And it completely blows apart anything I thought was possible... And leaves me wondering...
How have I lived my life for 21yrs without having this song in it?

General Comment:I think, literally, it's about a soldier at war realizing there's nobody at home waiting for him, or who would be devastated if he never made it back.

Metaphorically it could be like ChristianBrother said, someone contemplating his own death. In my opinion though, he wants to die. He has nothing to lose and no one to leave hurting. So, if there's no heaven or hell, and no love or family to hold onto, why hold on any longer?

"When they shake, say the wings won't break."

I suppose this line could hold up the idea that he doesn't want to die. So I don't really know what his intentions are, I guess. It could also serve to be a prayer/mantra for him, to give him strength in carrying out his service (if you're into the soldier interpretation), or his life. Again, it could be a mantra in which to carry out suicide...like, to quell his fear of death, hoping to end up somewhere safe.
