If we take this bird in, with it's broken leg,
We can nurse it, she said,
Come inside for a little lie down with me,
And if you fall asleep, it wouldn't be the worse thing.
But when I wake up, and your make up is on my shoulder,
And tell me if I lie down, would you stay now?
And let me hold you, oh.
But if I kiss you will your mouth read this truth,
Darling how I miss you, strawberries taste how lips do,
And it's not complete yet, mustn't get our feet wet,
'Cause that leads to regret, diving in too soon,
And I'll owe it all to you, oh, my little bird,
My little bird.
If we take a walk out, in the morning dew,
We can lie down, so I'm next to you,
Come inside for a little home made tea,
And if you fall asleep, at least you're next to me,
And if I wake up, say it's late love, go back to sleep,
I'm covered by nature, and I'm safe now,
Underneath this oak tree, with you beside me.
But if I kiss you will your mouth read this truth,
Darling how I miss you, strawberries taste how lips do,
And it's not complete yet, mustn't get our feet wet,
'Cause that leads to regret, diving in too soon,
And I'll owe it all to you, oh, my little bird,
My little bird,
My little bird,
My little bird.
And of all these things I'm sure of, I'm not quite certain of your love,
You make me scream, then I made you cry,
When I left that little bird with its broken leg to die.
But if I kiss you will your mouth read this truth,
Darling how I miss you, strawberries taste how lips do,
And it's not complete yet, mustn't get our feet wet,
'Cause that leads to regret, diving in too soon,
But I'll owe it all to you, oh, my little bird,
My little bird, whoa, oh, oh, oh, whoa,
My little bird,
My little bird,
You're my little bird.
We can nurse it, she said,
Come inside for a little lie down with me,
And if you fall asleep, it wouldn't be the worse thing.
But when I wake up, and your make up is on my shoulder,
And tell me if I lie down, would you stay now?

Okay so as far as meaning goes let's assume he's talking about a girl (seems pretty obvious) and it seems like they've sort of had a relationship before and maybe it didn't work out and now he's contemplating giving it another go.
I think the 'little bird' is a metaphor for their relationship. It has a "broken leg", so their relationship is 'injured' or 'damaged' and just isn't going to get better. So she suggests that they try to fix it. But at the end of the song he said he "left that little bird with it's broken leg to die" so I guess he chose not to continue the relationship, and yet because he plays the chorus again straight after I think he's still not sure whether he made the right choice because he still wants her but thinks it would be a mistake to jump straight back in.
This is the first time I've tried to figure out the meaning of the song and write it down so it could be that none of that makes sense or is completely wrong but that's just what I get from the song.
He and his ex girlfriend were kinda on a bike ride, and they found a chicken with its leg broken on the road.
The girlfriend was studying to be a vet and wanted to look after it, but Ed didn't really... Care he just wanted some "tea and a sleep".
They took it back home and Ed went to have a sleep while the girlfriend checked out the chicken. But when he woke up, the chicken had died. He felt really bad so he wrote a song for the chicken and his ex :)
