You terrify the land
You are pestle and mortar
Your first love's New Order
Mother Nature's Son
King of the Everglades
Population: one
I write poetry for myself
I write poetry for myself

(Oh, baby)
Ooh
Ooh

You're a permanent figure of jacked up sorrow
I want you to love me
You send me a coffin of roses
I guess that's the way that things go these days
Take pills, for instance
I heard they're no good for you
I won't and I never will
She said, "I won't and I never will"
"I won't and I never will"
"I won't and I never will"
"I won't and I never will"
Blue eyes
Ooh, blue eyes

Oh, baby, can't you see they had it in for me?
They had it in for me, they had it in for me
Oh, baby, can't you see ("I won't and I never will")
They had it in for me? They had it in for me
Blue eyes
Ooh, ooh baby, you got those blue eyes

I sent a message in a bottle to the press
It said, "don't be ashamed or disgusted with yourselves"
"Don't be ashamed or disgusted with yourselves"
"Don't be ashamed or disgusted with yourselves"
I thumb through the books on your shelves
I've thumbed through the books on your shelves
I've thumbed through the books on your shelves
I've thumbed through the books on your shelves

Blue eyes

I think Pitchfork got this one completely wrong. This is layered song for sure but as far as the bottled message to the press is concerned I hear it as a sincere (if somewhat complicated) feeling of forgiveness, not a "funny put-down" << Pitchfork. P4k is so odd sometimes. Do they get this record or don't they? Do they really appreciate the "essential complexity" of Bejar's music or are they just being placating? OK I'm just pissed that somehow this is 1.2 points short of the PERFECTION achieved by Kanye. I know, fuck pitchfork. But ARRRGH this record is SOOOO GOOOOD

    My Interpretation

I sent a message in a bottle to the press It said, "Don't be ashamed or disgusted with yourselves"

Until reading the above comments I never thought of this as being directed at the press - rather I understood it as the message being given to the press with the idea that they would distribute it. I'm positive that that's not the intended meaning, but, well...

Is it really "Your first love's New Order"?

agreed pitchfork got that line completely wrong. at first i thought it was a complicated forgiveness as well, but now i see that voldermania may have it right, maybe it was just sent to the press for a sort of general distribution. either way, there's nothing about it that seems like a 'funny put down.' not to split hairs.

I sent a message in a bottle to the press It said, "Don't be ashamed or disgusted with yourselves" "Don't be ashamed or disgusted with yourselves"

These lines are some of my favorite lyrics ever. A message in a bottle implies anonymity, while sending it to the press seems to indicate it should be read by the public. The line "Don't be ashamed or disgusted with yourselves" is so powerful to me. The line seems to be meant for anyone (the public) and there is no sense of blame attached as it was sent as a message in a bottle. It makes me feel like Dan Bejar is trying to send a message to everyone: you don't have to be ashamed of what you are, or what you feel. This has certainly said before by others, but I honestly never took it to heart before this song. My interpretation is pretty sappy, but it helped me through a rough co-dependent relationship break up. We can lose track of where our emotions our coming from sometimes, and for me anyway, this song helped me figure out why I was feeling like shit all the time. And then I didn't feel like shit anymore.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
