Halfway home in the hilltop trees
And all our footprints in the snow
And the evening glow, leaving
Low night noise in the winter time
I wake besides you on the floor
Counting your breathing
I can't see nothing in this half moon
Lay me down if I should lose you
Halfway working on a worn out house
And all our friends, the ragged clothes
The naked bones, whining
Where are we when the twilight comes?
The darker valley and the breeze
And the frozen leaves, chiming
Because I can't see nothing in this half moon
Lay me down if I should lose you
And all our footprints in the snow
And the evening glow, leaving
Low night noise in the winter time
I wake besides you on the floor
Counting your breathing
I can't see nothing in this half moon
Lay me down if I should lose you
Halfway working on a worn out house
And all our friends, the ragged clothes
The naked bones, whining
Where are we when the twilight comes?
The darker valley and the breeze
And the frozen leaves, chiming
Because I can't see nothing in this half moon
Lay me down if I should lose you

Halfway home = halfway to heaven
Footprints in the snow = the life that's now behind them
The evening glow leaving = they're both old/about to die
Throughout the song, winter is used to symbolize death, the end of things.
The speaker is uncertain. He doesn't know what to do, or what's next. All he does know is that he doesn't want to keep on living on earth or in Heaven unless his lover lives with him.
They've been "halfway working on a worn-out house"- trying to build a family? but it's not going as planned for whatever reason, so they're not putting as much effort into it as before. They're feeling discouraged and don't really see the point anymore.
"Where are we when the twilight comes?" Where are we when death comes? When our time comes?
The darker valley = the valley of the shadow of death.
Breeze = the four winds of the Bible, perhaps? the winds of change? or maybe just more winter, coldness.
Frozen leaves = time doesn't matter anymore, life is always beaten by winter/death (BUT, when winter ends, spring will come, which would then represent life after death/Heaven).
The darker valley and the breeze And the frozen leaves, chiming" is a very telling part of this story, because he starts to wonder, as the night progresses and gets darker, if he will be able to help at all or if his mate is going to die right there. The woods chime in and remind him that they are in a very bad situation and he thinks to himself "lay me down if I should lose you." This is very sad when he realizes that there is a good chance that she is going to die at his hands and at his expense. Sam did a very very good job with all the lyrics in this album, even though they are mostly religious. I think everyone should look into what else he has said in this album. Beautiful, tragic, and bold lyrics.
