its amazing how far music can come.. 24 years after it released and its one of the most heartfelt songs ive heard
As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
I wear my crown of thorns and pull the knife out my chest
I keep searching for something that I never seem to find
But maybe I won't, because I left it all behind
Now I'm stuck with this, and that'll never change
Always a part of me, until the very last day
Where to go from here? What road to travel on?
I spent my whole life choosing, and it always chose wrong
Will I try to have the will to be alive?
Will I try because I've never seen the light?
Blow it to the ground and it's now you see
You spent your whole life taking the best of me
Where'd you go?
Where's your home?
How'd you end up all alone?
Can you hear me now?
There's no light, there's no sound
Hard to breathe, when you're underground
Can you hear me now?
Hear me now
How long can I keep pretending to be?
That all the stars in the sky could mean something to me
Heaven will open up if I live on my knees
A man of many words, but a man of few deeds
Walking these streets, so absent of hope
A pillow of concrete, a man with no home
Lend him a hand, then we're walking the way
Leave the virtue of pity, but we live with the shame
So scared to dream in a world with no sunlight
When you wake up, you know it's darker than last night
Quickly we forget, sacrifice gone by
Born to walk away, been walking my whole life
Where'd you go?
Where's your home?
How'd you end up all alone?
Can you hear me now?
There's no light, there's no sound
Hard to breathe, when you're underground
Can you hear me now?
Hear me now
Look into my eyes and I see
What do I see?
Nothing at all (nothing at all)
Take another look around me
What do I see?
Nothing at all
Where'd you go?
Where's your home?
How'd you end up all alone?
Can you hear me now?
There's no light, there's no sound
Hard to breathe, when you're underground
Can you hear me now?
Hear me now
Can you hear me?

The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere.
In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.
I think this song is about someone looking for god but there is no sign of him. He's been talking to him, praying asking for guidance but God never replies. He talks about all the things that make him not believe in god. Why would god let such horrible things happen to his people?
At the beginning he mentions: "I keep searching for something that I never seem to find. But maybe I won’t, because I left it all behind." This meaning he's looking for faith but because of hardships in his life he's lost his faith and he feels that because he's lost hope he'll never be able to get it back.
"Heaven will open up if I live on my knees. A man of many words, but a man of few deeds. Walking these streets, so absent of hope."
This literally says "Why should I spend all my time praying to you if you're not helping?"
A man of many words but few deeds refers to God saying all he says in the bible but doesn't do anything he says. So the guy is wondering around lost and out of hope.
"There’s no light, there’s no sound. Hard to breathe, when you’re underground. Can you hear me now? Hear me now"
Obvious, but he's talking about when you're dead and being buried and he wants to know where he will go. And he's screaming to god to prove he exists so he can have faith again.
"Look into my eyes and I see What do I see? Nothing at all Take another look around me What do I see? Nothing at all"
This is him saying he has no faith anymore, he just can't find god or any faith in him. He can't see god, can't find him anywhere, so how can he be real?
This is just my interpretation. I love this song, because it describes me so well. I don't believe in God, but I once asked and begged for him to show me some kind of sign. I got silence. Amazing song! Love it so much~
I soo have to agree with this. I'm not religious either, so don't jump at me for making every song about religion, cause I don't. But when I was playing this earlier, my friend noticed the first line being the same as the lyrics to Gangster's Paradise, and my friend said what a ripoff, and I said it's probably from somewhere, and has meaning. Looked it up, it's from the bible.

Then the lyrics made sense in a very different way, and I started to see the religious aspect of it, or lack thereof, as he doesn't know if there is a God, he's calling out to him.

I can relate as well, I've done it before too, just in situations where I'd be like, if you're out there, show yourself and help me. Prove to me you're real.
