Christmas night, another fight
Tears we cried a flood
Got all kinds of poison in
Poison in my blood

I took my feet
To Oxford Street
Trying to right a wrong
Just walk away
Those windows say
But I can't believe she's gone

When you're still waiting for the snow to fall
Doesn't really feel like Christmas at all

Up above candles on air flicker
Oh they flicker and they float
But I'm up here holding on
To all those chandeliers of hope

Like some drunken Elvis singing
I go singing out of tune
Saying how I always loved you darling
And I always will

Oh when you're still waiting for the snow to fall
Doesn't really feel like Christmas at all

Still waiting for the snow to fall
It doesn't really feel like Christmas at all

Those Christmas lights
Light up the street
Down where the sea and city meet
May all your troubles soon be gone
Oh Christmas lights keep shining on

Those Christmas lights
Light up the street
Maybe they'll bring her back to me
Then all my troubles will be gone
Oh Christmas lights keep shining on

Oh Christmas lights
Light up the street
Light up the fireworks in me
May all your troubles soon be gone
Those Christmas lights keep shining on

General Comment:The video shows a lot of symbolism to the nativity scene. There is the big star in the background and the three Elvis Presleys (kings) playing violin. Chris Martin kind of comes off as playing a God figure. "But I can't believe she's gone" represents the bride of Christ (the church). "May all your troubles soon be gone" "Those Christmas lights Light up the streets Maybe they'll bring her back to me" these lines suggest Christ (the light of the world) has arrived and might be able to redeem us all. He's come because "Got all kinds of poison in Poison in my blood" (((That is just my outlook on the song. I don't mean to offend anyone.)))

General Comment:I think this is Coldplay's best song. Fantastic, finest Christmas song since 'Fairytale of New York'.
Such a shame it didn't chart higher, but maybe some people got put off by change to 6/8 time for the last part of the song, and also the fact that contrary to the 'I'm still waiting for the snow to fall' lyric it had snowed unusually early that year. It's about a man wandering Oxford Street having gone to buy a present after an argument with his partner, but realising that the relationship is over.He finds some solace and hope in the beatiful light display, which gives the song a positive conclusion .

General Comment:Mat Whitecross directed the video for the song, which was filmed at the South Bank of River Thames in London. The band are seen performing the song on a small theater-inspired stage with red velvet curtains. "The idea for the video was like a magical, surreal theater show with loads of tricks packed in," frontman Chris Martin said.

A trio of Elvis Presley impersonators are seen playing violins - they are the band's former manager Phil Harvey, Tim Crompton, the frontman of Coldplay support act The High Wire and comic actor Simon Pegg.

The words above the stage curtain in the video say CREDO ELVEM ETIAM VIVERE. This means "I believe Elvis lives" in Latin.

General Comment:You pretty much nailed it jmlrugby11. Fantastic song, but I wouldn't expect anything different from Coldplay. I love how the time slows down right before the chorus.

Although the song is a little depressing at first, I agree that the second half seems hopeful. He finds peace through the Christmas lights, thinking that maybe they'll lead her back to him. I can easily relate to that feeling. This is definitely one of my favorites coming from Coldplay. If this is any indicator to how their next album is going to sound, then we're in for a real treat!

General Comment:This song was a love at first sight...

"I took my feet to Oxford Street" I think that, after the fight they had, he's maybe looking for a present for her, since Oxford Street is a big shopping street, right? He wants to "right a wrong" and hopes that with a christmas present she might forgive him. But at the same time he knows that it won't be enough, that's why the shopwindows "tell" him to "just walk away". But he simply "can't believe she's gone" for good and that there's probably nothing he can do about it.

Although the lyrics are kind of depressing, it's a beautiful christmas song. I love how it changes in the middle and suddenly there is a sense of hope that, maybe, the Chistmas lights will bring her back to him, all the troubles will be gone and everything will be ok again...The second half of the song seems almost like a carol to me.

My Interpretation:I feel that this may be a continuation of the story that Chris Martin describes at the Apple keynote sppec as he sang Wedding Bells. He alludes to that performance a few times during this song, taking the lyrics, "All kinds of poison in my blood" from Wedding Bells.

He goes on to sing, "I go singing out of tune
Saying how I always loved you, darling
    And I always will."
Again, an allusion to the Apple keynote performance where he sang the lines "I always loved you and I always will" in the song Wedding Bells. During the performance at Apple his voice broke several times while singing, which is possible where the "I go singing out of tune" line comes from.

Whether this is a continuation of the story he described Wedding Bells as the beginning of or not, it's a great song with an amazing video!
