I think that the song is about the great irony of love--that it is the person who causes you the most pain who is also the one who is the source of great love and consolation. I think that the best part of the song--the part which powerfully speaks to the human condition--is the line "I remember you said, 'Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead.'" So, where does this line fit in with the whole song? Well, I think she was in a relationship which shaped her and changed her. All these years later, she hasn't gotten over it because it was so transformative. And now in her new pain--in the realization that he moved on and she hasn't--it is his old words which are providing her with comfort. She is gaining comfort from her memory of his insight that sometimes loves lasts, but sometimes it doesn't. He is the cause of her pain and her comfort, and well, that just makes it even more painful.
It's a GREAT song. And it has more 'hits" than her first hit single. The woman has an amazing quality to her voice. It's filled with raw passion. If anyone can sing about love or love lost, it's Adele. SO HAPPY she's found musical success. I wish her luck with her surgery...
