Call your girlfriend
It's time you had the talk
Give your reasons
Say it's not her fault
But you just met somebody new

Tell her not to get upset, second-guessing everything you said and done
And then when she gets upset tell her how you never mean to hurt no one
Then you tell her that the only way her heart will mend is when she learns to love again
And it won't make sense right now but you're still her friend
And then you let her down easy

Call your girlfriend
It's time you had the talk
Give your reasons
Say it's not her fault
But you just met somebody new

Don't you tell her how I give you something that you never even knew you missed
Don't you even try and explain how it's so different when we kiss
And you just tell her that the only way her heart will mend is when she learns to love again
And it won't make sense right now but you're still her friend
And then you let her down easy

Call your girlfriend
It's time you had the talk
Give your reasons
Say it's not her fault
But you just met somebody new
And now it's gonna be me and you

And you tell her that the only way her heart will mend is when she learns to love again
And it won't make sense right now but you're still her friend
And then you let her down easy

Call your girlfriend
It's time you had the talk
Give your reasons
Say it's not her fault

Call your girlfriend
It's time you had the talk
Give your reasons
Say it's not her fault
But you just met somebody new

My Interpretation:In my opinion this song isn't about a mistress. I believe that Robyn is singing this song from a mans point of view who has recently been with another man who has a girlfriend. The man who has always been ok with being gay is telling the other man who has the girlfriend, that this is who you are you have to explain to her it's not anything she did, that's why it won't make sense and you're still her friend, ja feel?

General Comment:Don't you think its more what she wants to happen as opposed to what will? to me its ironic, she's the other girl, but she's kidding herself, in an ideal world this is what he would do... but he wont, because they rarely do. That's why its so sad ... i think her own pain comes across in the song and this is why ... just my interpretation.

General Comment:While I agree with what most people are saying, I don't think it's fair to refer to the singer as a mistress. She is someone new and doesn't want to be a mistress. She is telling the man that if he wants to be with her then he has to break it off with his current/old girl friend and that he should do it in as kind a fasion as possible.

General Comment:The song is sung from the perspective of the mistress. Robyn explains it here:

Robyn: "The song is above love between 2 people, but there's 3 people involved."

    Friend: "And who's winning?"

    Robyn: "Me! I am winning!"

I honestly think the lyrics to this song are fabulous. It is so touching. My heart breaks for the girlfriend but at the same time I feel like the mistress is such a good person. She is concerned about her lover's girlfriend so much. And she appreciates the fact that while her lover may not be "in love" with his girlfriend, she is still someone important to him. This is shown when she says "and it might not make sense now, but you're still her friend." The mistress knows. Just because they aren't going to be together any more doesn't mean he doesn't still care for her as a friend.

General Comment:It most probably is from the perspective of the 'mistress' so to speak however I would also like to think it's from the Girlfriend HERSELF - being sarcastic in a way. Also, just saying to him to just come clean - say his petty excuses that justify his actions.

    "Say it's not her fault
But you just met somebody new" How could she not think it's her fault? Meeting someone new is not easy - especially if you are in a commited relationship. And to LEAVE because you met someone else - is a very petty reason to leave someone you apparently love.

Also this line "And then when she gets upset tell her how you never mean to hurt no one"

She knows he wasn't meant to hurt her but his actions demonstrate otherwise. How is she not supposed to be hurt? People get hurt when cheated on. It's a selfish excuse.

Lastly - "And it won't make sense right now but you're still her friend" everyone knows that the 'friend' line is the worst line out there when going through a break up.

However it most likely is from the 'mistress' perspective - and that would then mean sounds like a condescending selfish person - trying to convince him to do something he is unsure of. She is trying to have him to herself and her words carry no weight. She knows regardless of what she says the girlfriend is going to be hurt - but her goal is to ensure it's spoken about so it's a step foward with pursuing a r'ship with him.

General Comment:I love this song, I find it interesting that it can be seen as being told from so many perspectives - from the perspective of the other woman telling the man to break up with his girlfriend or from the perspective of the girlfriend who knows her boyfriend is cheating on her (as someone here mentioned). Another one I sometimes see it as, is from the perspective of the boyfriend talking to himself, trying to gear himself up to break-up with his girlfriend (almost like a boxer talking to himself in the mirror before a fight).

General Comment:I like to think the guy that robyn is seeing has a girlfriend and robyn is giving him advice on how to break up with her. She wants him to do it the nicest way possible and say, "it's not her fault." Robyn doesn't want him to talk about her or anything about her because that isn't the right way to do it..It's just her giving advice, in my opinion. But i do love this song

General Comment:i think the singer is an affair but is sick of remaining one. maybe this guy even promised to leave his gf but unfortuneately according to that song, this will never happen. So she can keep singin this song over and over again... or just realize.

My Interpretation:I've got a different spin on the song - I personally like thinking of the singer as a guy (because it's more applicable to my own experience) talking to the supposedly straight and taken man he's been secretly seeing. Obviously it takes a different spin if the boyfriend is leaving his girlfriend for another man instead of a woman:

Call your girlfriend, it's time you had the talk [He's been putting it off again and again, partly because he doesn't want to break up what he already has and partly because he can't fully admit that he fell for another man - or that he's attracted to men in general.]

Give your reasons, say it's not her fault
But you just met somebody new [It's not her fault that he's fallen for a man.]

Tell her not to get upset, second-guessing everything you said and done [By now, she must be devastated, she thinks he is gay and didn't really like her; but he really did like her, his affection was real. Also touches on bisexuality and how people sometimes pin "gay" or "straight" on others without recognizing a middle ground.]

And then when she gets upset tell her how you never meant to hurt no one [He did love her, but he just happened to fall for some other guy.]

Don't you tell her how I give you something that you never even knew you missed
Don't you even try and explain how it's so different when we kiss [Referring to the guy's different experiences with men and women; neither is better than the other, just different, and now he's finding something new and exciting with the new guy.]

Just my personal interpretation. I'm obviously not claiming this is what the songwriters meant, but I like this different spin on it.

General Comment:I think she is singing about a typical thing a guy would do. To me she is narrarating what the guy is doing and saying. Like whether or not the guy meet someone knew these are the excuses they have for leaving and its about the bullshit guys say.
