A single book of matches gonna burn what's standing in the way.
Roaring down the mountain, they're calling on the fire brigade.
Carry out the pictures and tell the kids that I'm okay.
If'n I'm forgotten, you'll remember me for the day.

I won't ever be your cornerstone.
I

All the black inside me is slowly seeping from the bone.
Everything I cherish is slowly dying or it's gone.
Little shaking babies and drunkards seem to all agree,
Once the show gets started it's bound to be a sight to see.

I won't ever be your cornerstone.
I don't want to be here holding on.
I won't ever be your cornerstone.
I

Watch her run, can you feel it?
Watch her run, can you feel it?
Watch her run, can you feel it?
Watch her run, can you feel it?

I won't ever be your cornerstone.
I don't want to be here holding on.
I won't ever be your cornerstone.
I

General Comment:I've just always looked at it as a song about someone who is on a path of self-destruction. Sometimes people are overwhelmed and they no longer can hold it together so they turn away from everything and the people around them, so they can move on.

My Interpretation:I agree with a lot of the previous explanations but I have another side of the story or a completely different explanation one that you can call positive

    Single book of matches
Gonna burn what's standing in the way
    Run down the mountain
Now they're calling on the fire brigade

at first one insignificant -or may be a bit bigger than that - event happens and destroy one of your beliefs one thing that you rely on and take for granted but in fact once that is destroyed at takes every other belief with it until nothing is for granted

    Bury all the pictures
And tell the kids that I'm okay
    If'n I'm forgotten
    You'll remember me 'fore today

when this happens it leaves you broken you may pretend that your okay for the sake of others and try to forget those beliefs you once had but you will always remember at least this day the day you lost them all.

    I, I won't ever be your cornerstone

I think the song is spoken by two different points of view at the beginning it was the writer's now his beliefs tells him that it will not be his cornerstone any more what's gonna happen now is he -the writer - gonna break down? is there a way without them? can a person pull him/herself from that kind of lost? or do you really need those beliefs to be? .

    All the black inside me
Is slowly seeping from the bone
    Everything I cherish
Is slowly dying, or it's gone

now the writer's tern to speak and he represent that lost as black darkness growing inside him until his body can't hold it any more so it reflects on his behavior because - again he says - everything he relied on is leaving dying and now he has nothing.

    Little shaken babies
And drunkards seem to all agree
    Once the show gets started
It's bound to be a sight to see

this part is not really clear to me but I think shaken babies and drunkards represent most of the people how have no real view in life they are blind when it comes to life decision or they have shades over their eyes they only see life from one angel they are there watching him live that judging from far away enjoying the seen .

    Watch her run
    Can you feel it?

now everything changes after all that black and darkness he felt there's one other feeling shining coming closer which is freedom now he's free even from himself his own believes now he knows how to start over without getting effected by beliefs that weren't his in the first place they are a reflection of others around him ideas got planted in his head one way or another but now as he lost them he can understand why anything happens why to believe in something or why not to but now it's all his .. his beliefs and his will now he's free that what running represent

General Comment:i know this song is made about the ruby ridge thing but i think this song is about being tired of being the reliable person. And you are tired of being the person that everyone comes to for help for their problems. so you are tired of being there "holding on" to everyones problems i think where it says "watch her run" is "whats your roll" if you think about it it makes sense because you are tired about being a cornerstone which is something that holds a wall together. like holding on to other peoples problems

My Opinion:Thank you for all the interpretations. I read about Ruby Ridge, it broke my heart. I've been in love with this song ever since the album came out and I've not regretted getting it. Kings of Leon is always the best. So deep and emotional.

General Comment:"I will be your cornerstone" is a phrase from the bible. bob marly often uses this story in his songs ("the stone that the builder refused, will always be the head cornerstone"). being someone's cornerstone implies that you are the one that holds the other together, like the cornerstone of a building. It is very likely this song is about losing faith because of the biblical implications of cornerstone, and that religion is often felt to be a person's "cornerstone". see Matthew 21:42 for bible ref

General Comment:Awesome song, I crank it up everytime its on the radio. I've been going through a phase for awhile where I feel like I've lost hope that the world is going to pull back from the edge of disaster and save itself, and that the people who have elected themselves to lead us don't care, have cremated care, and are only interested in themselves at the expense of the rest of us. I want it all to burn away so they end up with nothing and have to suffer like the rest of us. I think the phrase "watch her roll" is correct and signifies standing there watching her, whoever she is, maybe the earth, burn without doing anything to stop it. Like when someone is on fire and they stop, drop, and roll, and if you saw that happening the instinctual thing to do would be to smother the fire with a coat or blanket. Except in this song, the feeling is to let it burn away completly and not suffer anymore. Its a very deep and meaningful song that gets me everytime, my wife doesn't understand why it affects me so much, but then again she doesn't want to see how the world is changing either, because its painful to watch something beautiful die.

My Interpretation:My Interpretation: This song is about a man throwing it all away. "I don't wanna be your cornerstone" basically states that I'm not going to be the one you can rely on or the one who's going to hold it all together. The song starts with him starting a metaphorical "fire storm" that consumes everything good in his life. He can longer contain the "black" in his soul and he's reached the point of breaking. An aside, I think the lyric "If'n I'm forgotten, you'll remember me for today" means exactly what is says and that is: if for nothing else you'll remember me for this "fire storm". The rest of the song, "Watch her roll, can you feel it?" is essentially just Watch it Burn.

General Comment:It's definitely "watch her roll" - the "her" being the fire. As someone mentioned above, fire is often referred to as "rolling" so he's basically saying "watch the fire roll."
