If I was a different man, if I had blood in my eyes
I could have read of your heart, I could have read of your mind
But now I'm lonely as that, I put up a fight
So pick up your battering ram, love, I want to see it

There's too much riding on that
There's too much, too much, too much love

There's too much riding on that anyway

Maybe I talk too fast, maybe I talk too much
Give me the sensitive laugh, or give me the sensitive touch
Even if I could have kissed, even if I could be the blind
I'm so sorry I tried, love, I want to see it

There's too much riding on that
There's too much, too much, too much love

There's too much riding on that anyway

General Comment:I think the line "But now I'm lonely as that" should be "But now how lonely is that?"

He's saying that he could have (metaphorically) read of love and life and the object(s) of his affection, but instead he took action to gain real experience and live his life. It ties into the idea of the futility of words and that one should actively control the direction of their life instead of fantasizing about poetic ideals.

General Comment:Sufjan in concert: One of my favourite four letter words, love, we're gonna sing about that.

General Comment:I think this song carries over the theme from Futile Devices about the futility of language. It seems that, perhaps, Sufjan is wondering if he often talks too much and really says too little. It seems maybe he is being a little hostile against love in this song, and I'm not sure if that stems from something occurring in his personal life while he wrote this, or if love is an artistic device that he uses to describe the way most people put too much emphasis on certain words, such as "love." It seems he would rather see more emphasis placed on the actual actions of things transpiring, such as "the sensitive laugh" of "the sensitive touch."

General Comment:I could be wrong, but is the lyric "writing on that" and not "riding on that"? Obviously it would sound the same, but it's much more sensible if the word is "writing."

General Comment:Saw him in concert last night. Right after he finished this song he said, "There's too much riding on that word, 'Love.'"
Take it for what you will.
