I can't compete with the clear eyes of strangers
I'm more and more replaced
By my friends each night
I can't compete
Just can't recover
How many years it's been, it's day one in my mind
That's the first step
Each time
The heart is hard to find
It's hard to find the heart
Sometimes
I can't compete with your new-found religion
The good word seems everywhere
But good words only
I can't compete with a real education
All the fucked up things you say
Couldn't possibly be any less help to me
The heart is hard to find
It's hard to find the heart
Sometimes
I'm more and more replaced
By my friends each night
I can't compete
Just can't recover
How many years it's been, it's day one in my mind
That's the first step
Each time
The heart is hard to find
It's hard to find the heart
Sometimes
I can't compete with your new-found religion
The good word seems everywhere
But good words only
I can't compete with a real education
All the fucked up things you say
Couldn't possibly be any less help to me
The heart is hard to find
It's hard to find the heart
Sometimes

"The good word seems everywhere"
"word" is singular, not plural. Thus, it becomes apparent that he's talking about The Christian faith and the story of Jesus Christ, which is know as "The Good Word"
After hearing the full version, I was not disappointed.
Initially, I figured all this "heart" stuff, has to be about love, or a broken heart, but after listening to it several times I think it's about addiction, and recovering from addiction.
He can't compete with the clear eyes of strangers, losing friends,he mentions it's the first step and day one everytime, which is always the case when you're struggling to be sober.
You could easily attribute it to a caustic love as well.
Either way, it's a sad but hopeful song, and further cements my love for Jimmy Eat World.
