Dreams of long life
What safety can you find
See the great unknown
That's shade for miles

Good eye
I'm a good guy

Dreams of long life
What safety can you find
If the sea was that strong
Maybe we had
Maybe we had to fly

Was a good try
I'm a good guy

As high as the day
I read the papers
Before crime will pay
I'll learn to bury most beliefs

I have succeeded
I won't compete for long
I'm not supposed to show you
I've got two secrets
But I only told you one

Dreams of long life
What safety can you buy
If the sea was that strong
Maybe we had
Maybe we had to fly

Somebody make me say no
Somebody make me say no
Somebody make me say no
Somebody make me say no no no YES

I have succeeded
I won't compete for long
I'm not supposed to show you
I've got two secrets
But I only told you one
I'm not supposed to show you

I'm not supposed to show you
I'm not supposed to
I'm not supposed to show you
I'm not supposed to

General Comment:This is one of my favorite songs in the album

    Dreams of long life
    What safety can you find
    See the great unknown
    That's shade for miles

He didnt knew that he was going to know a bad girl (Well thats my own interpretation of the song)

    Good eye
    I'm a good guy

At first the guy is happy that the girl its interesting on him because the guy was good

    Dreams of long life
    What safety can you find
If the sea was that strong
    Maybe we had
    Maybe we had to fly

Maybe he was going into troubles with the girl and he was looking for an impossible solution to them (Maybe we had to fly)

    Was a good try
    I'm a good guy

He found out that the girl was a cheater or maybe she didnt deserve him because he knew that she was just playing with him (Was a good try)
And like he is a good guy he was telling her that it was over

    As high as the day
    I read the papers
    Before crime will pay
I'll learn to bury most beliefs

    This part its really confusing

    I have succeeded
    I won't compete for long

Maybe the girl was looking not for feelings but just for benefits

I'm not supposed to show you
    I've got two secrets
But I only told you one

Maybe he is really smart and doesnt wanna be with her because she was a bad girl and she dont deserve to know him at all

    Dreams of long life
    What safety can you buy
If the sea was that strong
    Maybe we had
    Maybe we had to fly

    Somebody make me say no
    Somebody make me say no
    Somebody make me say no
Somebody make me say no no no YES

Maybe someone told him to get away of her to realize that she doesnt deserve him.

    I have succeeded
    I won't compete for long
I'm not supposed to show you
    I've got two secrets
But I only told you one
I'm not supposed to show you

I'm not supposed to show you
    I'm not supposed to
I'm not supposed to show you
    I'm not supposed to

General Comment:Okay, I think I've got a good idea of what this song is about.

I think it's a guy who's affraid of ending his relationship because of a big mistake he has made (maybe an affair).

    "Dreams of long life
    What safety can you find"
    - He dreams of being with the girl for a lifetime and he desperately tries to find "safty" from his mistake.

    "See the great unknown
    That's shade for miles"
    - The life he wants to continue the relationship, but it's a shady and unknown future that threatens thier relationship.

He keeps telling himself that he is basically "a good guy" and I think that "it was a good try" means that he have done his best to keep her from telling about the mistake. And the "good eye", I belive, is the fear that she already know or suspects him, that she might have a "good eye" for those things.

If the sea was that strong
    Maybe we had
    Maybe we had to fly
    - He thinks that he could have done better in the relationship or that they could have done something different in it. ("fly over the sea" instead of "swimming against the waves")

    "As high as the day
    I read the papers
    Before crime will pay
I'll learn to bury most beliefs"
    - I don't know about the first two lines so I will skip those. Before he could get away with his "crime" towards her, he had to belief his own lies

    "I have succeeded
    I won't compete for long
I'm not supposed to show you
    I've got two secrets
But I only told you one"
    - He succeded his "cover-up" by telling half the truth and he doesn't have to be careful about it for a long time to come. It can also mean that he told her the truth and she left him and now it is of no burden anymore, BUT there's still something he haven't told her yet that he is keeping for himself.

"Somebody make me say no no no YES"
    - It can be some of his friends telling him to shut up about it, but he urges to be honest with her.

Hope that covers everything. I really love reading Paul's lyrics. You can always find drifferent meanings in them and even though you are not quite sure what the meaning is, you always find them meaningful :)

General Comment:I've always thought this song was about some hidden thing that carries a threat (the way he says "good try, I'm a good guy" as if trying to persuade the person). To me it also carries some kind of emergency, as if he wants to reveal his secrets but is bond not to.
Well, I heard this album is about ends of relations, and listening to this song the other day I thought it could be about adultery: A man, maybe in his forties with a classical crisis due to his age. He begins to thing that he's advancing in age and His life is flying too fast (« dreams of long life »), he’s afraid of aging. So he’s got this urge to go to see elsewhere and succumb to his impulse (« If the sea was that strong Maybe we had to fly » (« somebody made me say no, no, no, yes »).
He tries and seduce another woman but he feels remorse and shame (« I’m a good man » « I’ll learn to bury most beliefs ») maybe he’s got feeling for her and he’s torn between keeping silent or telling her the truth ( that he’s married).
For his secrets… Maybe he’s ill (« I have succeeded, I won’t compete for long » and maybe that’s part of the reason he committed adultary), and the second is his wife.

General Comment:I'm not going to systematically break down the lyrics, but on my first listen to this song, my impression is that Paul is saying he's achieved the official measures of success, but has not found any meaning or immortality in it.

General Comment:To me it's most obviously about superheroes, they bring safety, they're the good guys, they can fly and they make crime pay.

    I've got two secrets
But I only told you one
I'm not supposed to show you

It talks about his two identities but only one is revealed to the person that he is talking to

General Comment:the stanza: "as high as the day, I read the papers, before crime would pay, I had to bury most beliefs, I have succeeded"

He passed a test of morals and values. He receives his reward and it puts him in a great place. We all have secrets and he has let one be known to gain trust. The other secret is involving someone else who is keeping a close eye on him. I think the song is about personal salvation (not religous) with a dash of regret.

General Comment:this is a great song. i think this song means the band really wanted to give us an experimental album but they also know the age old if it ain't broke don't fix it saying. plus its a f-ing recession, lets not jeopardize job security based on hipster backlash of the last album.

General Comment:Doesn't it sound like "I won't commit for long" instead of "compete"? It's just that I don't hear the "p".

The "no no no yes" part is great isn't it? I think it is somehow a very accurate description of a certain feeling/thought that we all get sometimes...

Why did these guys removed the lyrics from their web page?! WWHHYYYY?!

General Comment:I don't know if what I posted above makes any sense to anyone other than myself, but I was trying to get across that because of greed, he is resorting to some sort of life of crime to make his own life better. Let me know how off I am ! lol
