This is not the end
This is not the beginning,
Just a voice like a riot
Rocking every revision
But you listen to the tone
And the violent rhythm
And though the words sound steady
Something empty's within 'em

We say Yeah!
With fists flying up in the air
Like we're holding onto something
That's invisible there,
'Cause we're living at the mercy of
The pain and the fear
Until we get, forget it,
Let it all disappear.

Waiting for the end to come
Wishing I had strength to stand
This is not what I had planned
It's out of my control

Flying at the speed of light
Thoughts we're spinning in my head
So many things were left unsaid
It's hard to let you go

(Oh) I know what it takes to move on,
I know how it feels to lie,
All I wanna do
Is trade this life for something new
Holding on to what I haven't got

Sitting in an empty room
Trying to forget the past
This was never meant to last,
I wish it wasn't so

(Oh) I know what it takes to move on,

I know how it feels to lie,
All I wanna do
Is trade this life for something new
Holding on to what I haven't got

Yeah, yeah
What was left when that fire was gone?
I thought it felt right but that right was wrong
All caught up in the eye of the storm
And trying to figure out what it's like moving on
And I don't even know what kind of things I've said
My mouth kept moving and my mind went dead
So, picking up the pieces, now where to begin?
The hardest part of ending is starting again!

All I wanna do
Is trade this life for something new
Holding on to what I haven't got

This is not the end
This is not the beginning,
Just a voice like a riot
Rocking every revision
But you listen to the tone
And the violent rhythm
Though the words sound steady
Something empty's within 'em
(Holding on to what I haven't got)

We say Yeah!
With fists flying up in the air
Like we're holding onto something
That's invisible there,
'Cause we're living at the mercy of
The pain and the fear
Until we get it, forget it,
Let it all disappear
(Holding on to what I haven't got!)

Song Meaning:I think it's about forgetting someone and move on. 'Cause it's neither the end nor the beginning. No matter how much you try to let go and move on he comes into your mind. You sit in a room and try to forget but it's useless.

A relationship starts with hopes and promises. Sometimes you know it won't last long but just because you wish it wouldn't be that way you make a beginning anyway.

And when you break up you think about the things you did and maybe shouldn't. You miss him, try to call him and say you wanna get back together then you realize romance is gone.(holding on to what i haven't got.)

My Interpretation:This song fits those who have taken their lives or those who are struggling with depression.

"But you listen to the tone
    And the violent rhythm
And though the words sound steady
    Something empty's within 'em"

Many people who struggle with depression put on a brave face, but they feel empty inside with a battle that rages within - one that no one can see.

    "We say Yeah!
With fists flying up in the air
    Like we're holding onto something
    That's invisible there,
'Cause we're living at the mercy of
    The pain and the fear"

Fighting depression is hard and scary and they are holding on to anything they can - even that which no one else can see.

"Waiting for the end to come
Wishing I had strength to stand
This is not what I had planned
    It's out of my control

Flying at the speed of light
Thoughts we're spinning in my head
So many things were left unsaid
It's hard to let you go"

These verses make me think of someone with depression who has given up the fight. They don't have the strength to fight on.

"(Oh) I know what it takes to move on,
I know how it feels to lie,
    All I wanna do
Is trade this life for something new
Holding on to what I haven't got

    Sitting in an empty room
    Trying to forget the past
This was never meant to last,
    I wish it wasn't so"

Those with depression lie often about how they are doing. They are trying to hold on but feel like they don't have anything to hold on to, or they don't have anything to hold on to, but they are trying to hold on.

    "Yeah, yeah
What was left when that fire was gone?
I thought it felt right but that right was wrong
All caught up in the eye of the storm
And trying to figure out what it's like moving on
And I don't even know what kind of things I've said
My mouth kept moving and my mind went dead
So, picking up the pieces, now where to begin?
The hardest part of ending is starting again!"

With depression, the fire is gone and you feel like you are in the eye of the storm. Depression is a liar though. Things can get better, but you do have to start again.

My Interpretation:Absolutely brilliant song from the first lyric to the last.

The best thing about it is that it can apply to so many situations. It expresses the feelings and emotions behind the end of one phase in life and the inevitable, impending beginning of another.

You get to the end and realize it was never meant to last forever and it's time to let go because what used to be there is gone now ("Holding onto what I haven't got"). Whether you're ready or not, it's time to move on.

"Flying at the speed of light
Thoughts we're spinning in my head
So many things were left unsaid
It's hard to let you go"

Hard to pick only one part of the song, but these words summarize the entire song perfectly. Think about how fast important life events seem to come and go, how difficult it can be to grasp what's happening, to voice your emotions, and ultimately to let go and move forward.

General Comment:I love this song. I love the spot where the bass/electric (whatever) guitar takes off near the end of the track. I love the energy. I love the lyrics. Personally, this song has meaning for me. And it is my near future due to the choices of another...the lies; manipulation; and fear. I'm surprised there are not more comments.

My Interpretation:This song sounds alot like how graduating from a school feels like. It's difficult to move on. It feels like everything is moving too fast and that things shouldn't ended yet they have. Nasty comments were made in frustration to people who could have been good friends forever leaving a them hating you and you may never see them again. Letting go of the the life style you had during your time in that school is usually the hardest part of moving on. You sometimes want to desperately hold on to it because it's all you ever knew.

This is probably not what LP had in mind when they wrote it, but when I hear this song the feelings I had during and around the time of graduation from school rush into my mind. I almost want to cry from the surge of emotions both good and bad.

General Comment:Gotta agree with Samuentaga. This is about letting go of a relationship that never came to fruition. It's about the pain that accompanies the end of a love that never materialized on the part of the other party. At least with death there is finality and one is forced to move on, but with unrequited love there is the hope that must first die before one can let go enough to begin a new life alone. "We're living at the mercy of the pain and the fear" is a GREAT line. It's scary to have to relinquish a dream when you don't know what the future will hold without that person you love. I really love this song and not just because it has personal meaning to me; there's the guitar part 2/3 of the way through (either bass or electic...I am musically inept) that makes me want to fly each and every time it kicks in.

Song Meaning:I think the very first part may be about how they changed their music between Meteora and Minutes to Midnight. "But you listen to the tone in the violent rhythm and although the words sound steady somethings missing within" meaning that they loved how the first two albums sounded, but it didn't feel right writing and selling music just about their pain. "We say yeah with fists flying up in the air, Like we're holding onto something that's invisible there, Because we're living at the mercy of the pain and the fear Until we dead it, forget it let it all disappear" This was about how much they didn't want to let go of their style of music but "they were living at the mercy of the pain and the fear", so they said forget it let the pain go (like it says in Iridescent).
