I use the dead wood to make the fire rise
The blood of innocence burning in the skies
I filled my cup with the rising of the sea
And poured it out in an ocean of debris

Ooh, I'm swimming in the smoke
Of bridges I have burned
So don't apologize
I'm losing what I don't deserve
What I don't deserve

We held our breathe when the clouds began to form
But you were lost in the beating of the storm
But in the end we were made to be apart
In separate chambers of the human heart

Ooh, I'm swimming in the smoke
Of bridges I have burned
So don't apologize
I'm losing what I don't deserve
It's in the blackened bones
Of bridges I have burned
So don't apologize
I'm losing what I don't deserve
What I don't deserve

I'm swimming in the smoke
Of bridges I have burned
So don't apologize
I'm losing what I don't deserve
The blame is mine alone
For bridges I have burned
So don't apologize
I'm losing what I don't deserve
What I don't deserve
What I don't deserve, ooh woah
What I don't deserve

I use the dead wood to make the fire rise
The blood of innocence burning in the skies

Song Meaning:I think this song contains many metaphors.

"I used the deadwood to make the fire rise"
Someone made a stupid thing, that made a situation much more worse.

"The blood of innocence burning in the skies"
Innocent people suffered, because of his mistake.

    "I'm swimming in the smoke
    Of bridges I have burned"
He is in that bad situation, because of himself.

    "So don't apologize
    I'm losing what I don't deserve
    What I don't deserve"

Maybe he lost his girlfriend and tries to say her that it all was his fault and she shouldn't apologize.

General Comment:This song is the story of someone going through a break up with another person as the bomb is dropping on Japan.

I use the dead wood to make the fire rise
The blood of innocence burning in the skies
I filled my cup with the rising of the sea
And poured it out in an ocean of debris

--This is the person surviving after the bomb.

    I'm swimming in the smoke
    Of bridges I have burned
    So don't apologize
    I'm losing what I don't deserve

--This is the aftermath the person in the story is going through after the break up. "Bridges I have burned" is a metaphor the what drove the protagonist to break up with his/her other. The protagonist feels he is getting what he deserves.

We held our breath when the clouds began to form
But you were lost in the beating of the storm
And in the end we were made to be apart
The seperate chambers of the human heart

--The couple was not together when the bomb went off bc of their unsuccessful relationship with each other. But he realizes they were not meant to be together.

General Comment:There's a component to the interpretation of this song I believe has been missed so far, and that's the increasing alchemical and astrological symbolism showing up all over the place in Linkin Branding and lyrics. This album has a very spiritual aspect to it, as the band is growing.

This song's position at the start of the album further motivates that it as an apology to fans for the ever changing style:

Burning dead wood, rising fire, smoke in the sky - all elemental references of loss echoed in burning bridges.

Filling ones cup and scooping water - another elemental reference - relates to people, and the sea as a large body of them. Emptying it in an ocean of debris means literally that, in the Buddhist sense - in order to move on, ones cup must be emptied or it will overflow, and in this case, emptying onto that which was lost by burning bridges.

The rest follows on from the above...

This song is an apology, but not really, to the increasing criticism of the new style versus the old.

It follows on from "For What I've Done."

My Interpretation:I use this song to delve into my past and let go of all my pains and regrets. When I sit here and take the time to go back there, it's such a storm in my life echoing out with recurring thoughts and dreams. I want to take one final pass back there... perhaps a few passes until it's final.

All the bridges I've burned. All the train wreck relationships I've had. All the people that have hurt me, and all those that I've hurt... and now as I shed the shadows of my former self, I am giving up everything I don't deserve. I am making apologies for everything so I can move on.

Life in the past is not what makes us. And the future is not made. All we have is this tiny, infinitesimal moment to make everything happen... reaching forth into our dreams like as star. But we must crumble away all the crust and layers of soot, so we may always burn bright and clean.

General Comment:in my opinion burning in the skies is a song for someone who made many mistakes in his past and now he asks for apology. but the video is related to the whole a thousand suns theme which is nuclear wars etc. and the video is based on the lyric "the blood of innocence burning in the skies"

My Interpretation:It's not as literal as it seems. Just because there is talk of burning and smoke does not mean it is about a war scenario.

The song is about painfully admitting to oneself that your significant other is not the one, that you two are not meant to be.

"I use the dead wood to make the fire rise
The blood of innocence burning in the skies"

The one who realizes the relationship is not right is intentionally trying to destroy the relationship (breaking up) to prevent pain in the future. That person feels bad because it is causing pain for the other (the innocent one).

    "I'm swimming in the smoke
    Of bridges I have burned
    So don't apologize
    I'm losing what I don't deserve"

The heartbreaker is feeling the pain of breaking off, too, because of how much the relationship meant to him or her. However, he or she doesn't want the other to feel bad because the heartbreaker knows he doesn't deserve him or her anyway.

"We held our breathe when the clouds began to form
But you were lost in the beating of the storm
But in the end we were meant to be apart
In separate chambers of the human heart"

They both knew it was coming, however it was impossible to stop because "the beating of the storm" was already acknowledged. They simply weren't meant to be.

    Sad song. :(
