I'm saved, I'm saved
And oh--would you believe it?
On the third day
I felt his presence near me

I know they won't believe me, but
I've got favorite memories, well

I'm saved, I'm saved
And oh--could you believe it?
You won't regret
If you choose to believe it

Freedom. Silence. Always, yeah
All these darkened hallways

Darkness always
It doesn't make much sense
Darkened hallways
Away from me, callin' "stay"

General Comment:Sorry I don't remember where I read this, but I'm about 90% sure that Bradford Cox said that this is a sincere song about his faith in Jesus, as he was raised as a Southern Baptist or something like that. In the lyrics, he writes that freedom and silence forever don't make much sense, and that God fills the void for him.

General Comment:Sounds to me like a song about addiction, but a much written component of religion is the Dualism thing, Good/Evil God/Devil

Song Meaning:At first this seemed straight forward, but now upon further inspection, I'm not certain if this is a celebration of religious enlightenment, or a criticism. Why would the darkened hallways be calling you? Is this like a drug addict who went clean, but still has urges to turn back the dark path (hallway)? But earlier he says 'freedom, silence, always. all these darkened hallways'. If those two ideas go together, is he saying that freedom and silence come with the darkened hallway path, or is the freedom and silence is on the enlightened path?

Somewhat confused. Freedom seems like a good thing, and something someone would preach they have if they are saved. But relying on religion can be a crutch, much the opposite of freedom. Silence could refer to, as it commonly has been referred to in the past, as a lack of God's guiding 'voice'.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it.

    Lyric Correction:From the liner notes:

I am saved! I'm saved and, oh, would you
believe it? On the third day I felt his
presence near me. I know they won't
believe me, but I've got favorite memories.

I am saved! I'm saved, and, oh, could you
believe it? You won't regret if you choose
to believe it. Freedom, silence / always.
    All these darkened hallways.

Darkness always - it doesn't make much
since! Darkened hallways, away from me
    calling: stay!

General Comment:I've personally deciphered the lyrics as follows :

    "i'm saved, i'm saved,
    and oh,
    would you believe it?

    on the third day,
i've felt his presence heal me.

    i know,
    they won't,
    believe me,
    but,
    i've got,

    favorite memories.

    well,

    i'm saved, unscathed,
    and oh,
    could you believe it?

    you won't regret,
if you choose to believe it.

    freedom, silence,
    always, yeah,
    all these, darkened hallways.

    darkness, always,
    it doesn't make much sense.
    darkness, always,
    away from me, calling, 'stay.'

To me the lyrics represent "finding god," or breaking through a period of intense sadness/depression and emerging on the other side with confidence. That's a highly personalized interpretation, however. Either way, this is such a beautiful song. Thank you, Bradford. If anybody else is hearing the lyrics differently, please continue to share. :)

General Comment:My favourite off of Halcyon. I knew it'd be my favourite when I first heard it. Just an amazing rock song. Deerhunter's so good at bringin all these elements together to produce something magical.

General Comment:okay, so a couple of things.... first off, this song is seriously just so ridiculously good... and, i've altered the lyrics a bit as i hear them (though, by no means am i even remotely sure that they are correct):

    I'm saved, I'm saved
And, oh, would you believe it?
    On the third day
I felt his presence near me
I know they won't believe me, but
    I've got favorite memories, well
    I'm saved, I'm saved
And, oh, could you believe it?
You won't regret, if you choose to believe it
    Freedom, silence, always, yeah
    All these darkened hallways

    Darkness, always
    It doesn't make much sense
    Darkened hallways
    Away from the current state

General Comment:I believe it says 'You won't regret if you choose believe it'. or something.

Funny the way I changed my perspective of this song from the first time I heard until today. I love it.
