It's in your eyes, a colour fade out
Looks like a new transition

It's starting up and shaking your ground
Turning your head to see a new day calling

Does it feel like a head to lean on
A snapshot from where you were born
I'm looking for your hand in the rough
You're caught in the wire
Well, I'll lift you out

Leading on the action
Caught in a cell phones rays
Bleeding on a sofa
Staring at the waistline
He's coming and she knows it
Even though she knows why
Footsteps in the hallway
Girl you haven't got time

You gotta get out
Go far away

Darkness in the bedroom
Maybe she is resting up
Maybe she was out late
Just come back from the club
I can't hear her breathing
Something doesn't seem right
Killer in the hallway
We're living on a set time

We gotta get out
Go far away

My Interpretation:The first time I heard this song and it's lyrics, the first thing that came to mind was a song about an abusive relationship. Which I think is quite well represented in the lyrics.

"It's in your eyes, a colour fade out
    Looks like, a new transition"
The idea of the colour fading from someones eyes to me implies sadness and disappointment, though it could also represent tears or something.

"It's starting up and shaking your ground
Turning your head to see a new day calling"
I think that this line is actually referencing some form of physical abuse, shaking your ground being something that shocks you and most likely strikes fear into you. And this might be a bit grim but the way he says "turning your head" makes me think that this new day calling is something like a punch in the face, once again this is just my interpretation,

"Does it feel like a head to lean on
A snapshot from where you were born
I'm looking for your hand in the rough
    You're caught in the wire
    Well, I'll lift you out"
This line I think is talking about this idea that in an abusive relationship, people still love the person who is abusing them. So it's saying the victim still feels something for their partner. Getting "wires crossed" is a well known way of saying you're in love with someone, so it's saying the victim is stuck in love with this person, and the narrator of the song is saying that they will help this person lose their feelings for the person that beats them.

    "Leading on the action
Caught in a cell phones rays
    Bleeding on a sofa
    Staring at the waistline"
The part about being caught in the cell phones rays suggests maybe the person singing the song is on the phone to the victim after an attack, the fact that they are bleeding furthers this idea. Staring at the waistline could also reference some form of anorexic disorder caused by verbal abuse, being called things like out of shape or fat.

"He's coming and she knows it
    Even though she knows why
    Footsteps in the hallway
    Girl you haven't got time"
I think this part is fairly self explanatory, the victim hears their abusive partner coming ever closer, and the person on the phone is telling them that they haven't got much time to leave.

    "You gotta get out
    Go far away"
    This speaks for itself

    "Darkness in the bedroom
    Maybe she is resting up
    Maybe she was out late
Just come back from the club"
This bit makes me think of the abused partner coming up with some form of excuse for the physical damage, or in this case being knocked out on the bed, saying she is resting up is just a cover up for the fact that the abusive other has knocked them out.

    "I can't hear her breathing
    Something doesn't seem right
    Killer in the hallway
We're living on a set time"
This part suggests the person singing the song has come to the rescue of the person who is being abused, and is seeing beyond all the stories for the injuries, and that she can't just be resting up because he can't hear her breathing. Then I think he hears this abusive partner coming down the hallway, and an image appears in my head of Rob Swire running out of the house with the girl over his shoulder, rescuing her from the abusive partner,

    "We gotta get out
    Go far away"
Now the person who has rescued he girl, he is at risk from this dangerous partner, so both of them will have to get as far away as they can to save themselves.

This might be quite a dark interpretation of the song but it is my interpretation of it, and the only interpretation that fully makes sense to me, the lyrics seem to fit quite well to this sort of scenario.

General Comment:I think it's hilarious that people totally ignore the title when interpreting the meaning of the song! I mean they didn't just name it witchcraft because it sounds cool! They named it witchcraft because if you watch the video it's about the birth of a witch! The girl is battling between darkness and light! Which is why in the beginning she's in a white dress spinning and struggling in the depths of the water. Going back and forth in her head trying to decide the right path while slowly being tangled by the dark's ribbons. Ultimately she is consumed by the darkness and close to the end of the song if you notice you will see that the light rays make the Wiccan symbol the pentagram the sign of the witches. And the girl is shown being reborn as a witch from the darkness in a black dress!

General Comment:I always interpreted this song as being a story about a girl's suicide. I thought the lyrics were "You're cutting the wire
    while I lift you out

    Leading on the action
Caught out of cell phones range
    Bleeding on the sofa
    Staring at the wasteland
He's coming and she knows it
    Even though she knows why
    Footsteps in the hallway
    Girl you havent got time"

As if the singer is in love with her and even though she knows that and knows he's coming for her she feels like she has to escape her life and get out. The second half of the song is the singer coming into the room, desperately hoping for other possible reasons the room is the way it is but finds her dead or close to death. And then I thought the lyrics were "Something doesn't seem right, heal her in the hallway/ we're living on a set time"

Funny how different people hear different things

My Interpretation:Maybe she was raped, then killed?

    ______________________________

"It's in your eyes, a color fade out
    Looks like, a new transition
It's starting up, and shaking your ground
Turning your head to see a new day calling"
    - she might've fell in love, or had a temporary crush on someone, and it was changing her as a person, her life. The "new transition" being that change. "It's starting up" suggests that it's early days, and merely the start of a new relationship/affair.

"Does it feel like a head to lean on?
A snapshot from where you were born
I'm looking for your hand in the rough
    You're caught in the wire
    Well I'll lift you up"
    - The singer is asking how it feels to be overwhelmed by the woman's new love interest. "A head to lean on" being the love interest - a shoulder to cry on, someone who will be there for her, maybe?

"A snapshot from where you were born" could possibly referring to the memory of her parents being in love during her childhood, or it could be a reference to fairytales and happy endings, that kind of thing, as it relates to childhood. He could be asking if she thinks it's true love.
It's almost as if even though he asks her those questions, he's not really interested. He might be trying to get her to see sense, that something isn't right, perhaps.

"I'm looking for your hand in the rough" ...maybe he's saying that he's trying to reach her and get her to realise that something's wrong.

"You're caught in the wire," meaning that she's overwhelmed by this feeling, caught up in it, in fact.

And finally, "well, I'll lift you up" sounds like he's saying that he'll make her see straight/realise, and he'll help her overcome the pain/grief that comes with that realisation. I guess he cares about her.

    ______________________________

The lyrics later on in the song suggest she's abused in some way. ("bleeding," "not breathing," for example)

It seems that she's vulnerable at one point, when she's "in the bedroom." The singer must be watching over her or something, idk. This might be the point at which she is raped. The "tiger" in the bedroom (if they are the correct lyrics), could be the rapist.

But of course, she's discovered to not be breathing later, which suggests the idea that she's killed shortly after being raped.

    ______________________________

I think the reason for the singer switching from "*you've* gotta get out" to "*we've* gotta get out" is to do with the fact that at first, he's just looking out for her and advising her to escape and stuff, but towards the end when she's found not breathing, he feels like he has to get involved and help her, so they're in it together...

got kinda lazy towards the end xD but yeah.

Lyric Correction:To all the guys who have been writing comments, you're about right, but you've been writing comments on the wrong lyrics
The full lyrics to the song are:

It's in your eyes, a color fade out
    Looks like, a new transition
It's starting up, and shaking your ground
Turning your head to see a new day calling

Does it feel like a head to lean on?
A snapshot from where you were born
I'm looking for your hand in the rough
    You're caught in the wire
    Well I'll lift you up

    Leaning on the action
Caught in a cell phone's rays
Bleeding on the sofa, staring at the wayside
He's coming and she knows it, even if she knows why
Footsteps in the hallway, girl, you haven't got time

    You gotta get out
    Go far away
    You gotta get out
    Go far away

    Darkness in the bedroom
Maybe she's resting up, maybe she was out late
Just came back from the club, I can't hear her breathing
Something doesn't seem right, killer in the hallway

General Comment:i think its about a guy and a girl are doing it in a room and they hear her husband (or her dad. maybe they're young. hence "Bleeding on reaction") coming to check on her in her room- "Footsteps in the hallway, girl, you haven't got time"

(also,"Pleading on the sofa" and "He's coming and she knows it, even if she knows why"- adds to the sex possibility.)

    "You gotta get out
    Go far away
    You gotta get out
Come far away"- she's telling him to leave before they're caught

he leaves through the window or something.

"Darkness in the bedroom"- shes alone now and pretending to sleep

"Maybe she's resting up, maybe she was out late
Just came back from the club, I can't hear her breathing"-

"Something doesn't seem right, killer in the hallway"- when he's walking home he realises that it was a killer, not her husband or father, etc.

"We're leaving on the same time"- he comes back to rescue her from the killer

    "We gotta get out
    Go far away
    We gotta get out
Come far away"- they gotta escape

this is what i think that this song means. it sounds very much like this is what it's about. please tell me what you think...

My Interpretation:Definitely my favorite song off of Immersion, here are a few of my thoughts:

First off, I get the feeling that the song is mainly about drug use/addiction and the girl he is referring to could possibly be someone, maybe even a girlfriend/close relation who may have overdosed on, or at least had a problem with heroin.

The beginning line says "it's in your eyes, a colour fade out" which, to me, brings to mind the image of enlarged pupils (the color in her eyes fading out into black as they enlarge from getting high) which seems to reference drug use, maybe heroin.

In the next stanza he asks "Does it feel like a head to lean on?" which sounds a bit like he's questioning the nature of this unknown girl's possible addiction (eg. "Why do you do this?"). He also mentions "a snapshot to where you were born", maybe the speaker is regretful that this woman has given into drug use, as it may have been a problem in her family in the past (ex. a difficult childhood/addict parents).

The "Killer in the hallway" to me doesn't so much reference a real person, but is rather symbolically referring to how this drug use is figuratively (or maybe even literally) killing her. To this point, the whole "Darkness in the bedroom/maybe she's resting up..." bit could even be a description of him discovering her overdosing and trying to hope that theres a benign explanation for her being passed out on the bed.

The repeated chorus of "we gotta get out, go far away" makes me think of a mutual situation where they were both users, and he's desperate to escape the addiction, for her sake and his.

Finally, if you watch the new music video for Witchcraft theres a lot of imagery that seems very reminiscent of drug use. Especially at the very beginning of the video, the liquid-like forms and black chalky stuff looks a lot like a loaded heroin spoon (bubbles etc. from it getting heated up for injection). Also the drowning girl throughout the video is a really cool touch, I feel like this song is the main lynchpin of this album (after all, it's called Immersion and this is a video with a woman basically immersed in dark, murky water and drowning, and it seems like she's pretty helpless)

This is all speculative and more the way I've listened to the song, so by no means should anybody make assumptions about Rob Swire's actual past based on it, after all the best lyricists write things that are pretty artistically interpretive and personal to the point where the real meaning is probably only known to them and a few people.

Thanks for reading though! Let me know what you think and if I should keep doing this stuff!

Song Meaning:I believe this theme of the song is death/rebirth or awakening, as seems to be the case for the whole album.
Here is my take on it:

The color in your eyes is fading, you (the listener) are in a transition.
It is a pretty big change that you are about to make, and that is why it is shaking your ground,
but you are unable to resist the call, even though the path that leads you towards this new day is rough and difficult.
The text writer makes his helpful intentions clear by saying well I lift you up (I am going to take you to the next level)

In the video clip you can see the girl is uplifted aswell and later shackled (by cellphone rays?)
There seems to be a killer after this girl. She knows it and she is waiting for him. (she can't move because she is shackled?)

The "we gotta get out" part sounds like a call for action to me. Since the word "we" is used I think the writer includes himself here.

In the last part of the girl seems to come back to life, along with a star of David that is shown in the lighting while the band is playing.

I believe there are some pretty interesting messages in the new Pendulum songs but I haven't quite figured them out yet :D

Thanks for reading, I'm looking forward to reading what you think.

General Comment:I know a guy who just had his baby girl die at birth and this song was one he picked for her.

It really captures the urgency of needing to get her out to try and save her...

    I think it's beautiful. RIP Baby x

General Comment:I watched the clip to this song and loved it! I really enjoyed trying to disect the meaning of the song in conjunction with the clip... I may be faarrrr off. But it's my abstract interpretation that I'm putting out there ready for criticism ;) (also English is my second-language so please be kind :P hehe)

I think this song is as much about the process of falling in love as the creation of those feelings inside you physically. You have to watch the clip to get what I'm going on about below :P

It's in your eyes, a color fade out
    Looks like, a new transition

In the clip, the girl seems like she's in another world, below water, like her subconcious. As the beat of the music intensifies, you see her waking up, every cell, every microscopic detail of her biology/existance - it pulsates through her whole body to her spirit, soul, heart until she opens her eyes to love... "it's in your eyes, a color fade out" it's in all of our souls, buried... also her innocence is symbolised in her wearing white in the clip, though you soon see black clothlike streams shooting towards her as the song progresses as she inevitably falls in love (all I believe symbolise the death of her as she falls in love and it's beyond her control or resistance/her new transition (new self when she comes out of it all is in the final scene))... she is about to be fully consumed and it'll be a "new transition" falling in love.

It's starting up, and shaking your ground
Turning your head to see a new day calling

"It's starting up, and shaking your ground" Love is risky and it can ruin and mess with your emotions, but everything in your life as it stands at that instance, point of time will soon be shaken out of place... yet you can't resist it. You want to face it, you want to see the possibilities... you want it to ruin everything because something in you hopes that if it's true (if it's love), if that word even exists in this world, then it can't ruin you forever but make you stronger, transform you (and the beat intensifies in the clip like adrenaline puslsing through a persons vain - curiosity).

Does it feel like a head to lean on?
A snapshot from where you were born
I'm looking for your hand in the rough
    You're caught in the wire
    Well I'll lift you up

The second paragraph, starting with "does it feel like a head to lean on? A snapshot from where you were born" I think of how many women fall in love for the temporary sense of peace it brings. As for the "snapshot from where you were born" deep down you subconciously want or bring/take from the relationship what your parents had... maybe you also want to idolize the other person like all that you grew up believing was love, or love is supposed to be like (and not believe in some chemical reaction happening in your brain). But I really think in this instance it's just refering to struggles of her past. Leading to the 'I'm looking for your hand in the rough. You're caught in the rough... I'll lift you up" To me all this is just sounding like the guy's knight-in-shining armour disguise (notice I say 'disguise' because as the song progresses you come to realise the selfish motives that ends it al( with the perfect excuse of feeling trapped by it all. '"we" gotta get out...')

    Bleeding on reaction
Caught on a cell phone's rays
Pleading on the sofa, staring at the wayside

The whole of the third paragraph is really the lovey-dovey phase where you're looking into every detail of that person, dying for their reactions, 'caught on a cell phone's rays' (pretty sel-explanatory = all the sms's and texting and waiting on calls). Now "he's coming and she knows it" She's all excited by his pursuit of her... by his sudden interest, by her constant longing and wanting to believe this is true love (when it's just the intense euphoria of love) where her heart is really trying to win against her head... the sad part of love, the realisation that as much as you want the person to love you and pursue youuuu, you don't want to face the truth that he's only after one thing... and we all know what that becomes at the very passionate stages...

He's coming and she knows it, even if she knows why (*sad reality)
Footsteps in the hallway, girl, you haven't got time

But it's too late "footsteps in the hallway" means he's already set foot in the empty halls of her heart and nowwww she finally realises that she has to run, that it's not really love - it's attraction (but it's almost too late - she thinks she's in love...)! Wake up!?! "girl, you haven't got time" He's out to get her and it's not for love. Thus the chorus.Reminds me of that feeling where you want to break free from all that's been created and just run away... to save whatever part of you that's left (apart from the relationship)... the innocence, your childhood dreams of love, your immaturity... where you're not ready... ready for love and sex.

    You gotta get out
    Go far away
    You gotta get out
    Come far away

    Darkness in the bedroom
Maybe she's resting up, maybe she was out late
Just came back from the club, I can't hear her breathing
Something doesn't seem right, killer in the hallway
We're leaving on the same time

On to the last paragraph... "Darkness in the bedroom" I think these are the final stages of this fatal attraction where it's finally a little about the guys feelings. Where the guy begins to suspect their relationship from her signs of reluctance physically, "maybe she's resting up, maybe she was out late" Then he thinks of what she's been doing, where she's been? "Just came back from the club, I can't hear her breathing" He starting to worry because he's only now beginning to have feelings of attachment for her (after the physical side of their relationship). In his state of adrenaline and panic (in the music as well), he too begins to find some answers "Something doesn't seem right, killer in the hallway" Through his suspicions, I bet he either finds her unfaithful with the whole "killer in the hallway" meaning there's another guy... or it could be worst, that he's actually discovered he's fallen in love with her, remember "footsteps in the hallway" previously when the girl first fell in love, and now it could be his turn and he can't handle it "killer in the hallway symbolising, having the other person in your heart... and at the same time being so totally attracted to them that you're willing to do anything for them... you know they have total control over you... they have your life as long as they are in your heart... they become the "killer in the hallway" the assissin of your heart/life literally. Naturally you start thinking...

    We gotta get out
    Go far away
    We gotta get out
    Come far away

So finally - it becomes a mutual agreement to leave/part ways... as they are both affraid of this love/attraction. "We're leaving on the same time" They somehow know their attraction and this kind of love is impossible and come to a mutal agreement to depart (together at the same time).

so it ends with "we gotta get out... go far away" and in the clip you notice... the girl is no longer (dressed in) white (pure) and in a deep unconcious state... innocence, purity and dreams of love... this relationship he sings and urges forward... changes her... all the shattered pieces are fixed in her and together again (as she gains a greater sense of reality)... but she's no longer the same... she's fixed, she's black (mysterious) and no longer the damsel in distress type... and with that there's no longer the reason he pursued her in the first place - no sign of vulnerability (with that great black wall built behind her - her walls are up - she'll gaurd her heart next time). As for him, he was the killer all along, he was never going to stay but he couldn't kill her heart/life... he made her better (or at least a part of her (before they parted)).

Dramatic? Yes I think so too... :P hehehe

I so need some sleep right now.........
