Can we pretend that airplanes
In the night sky
Are like shooting stars
I could really use a wish right now (wish right now, wish right now)
Can we pretend that airplanes
In the night skies
Like shooting stars
I can really use a wish right now (wish right now, wish right now)

(Dreamin', I'm fallin, dreamin', I'm fallin')

Lets pretend like its 98, like I'm eating lunch off of Styrofoam trays
Trying to be the next rapper coming out the A
Hoping for a record deal, to re-know my pain
Now lets pretend like I'm on the stage
And when my beat drops everybody goes insane (OK)
And everybody know my name (B.o.B)
And everywhere I go people wanna hear me sang
Oh yea and I just dropped my new album
On the first week I did 500 thousand
Gold in the spring and diamond in the fall
And then a world tour just to top it all off
And let's pretend like they call me the greatest
Selling out arenas with big ass stages
And everybody loved me and no one ever hated
Lets try to use imagination

[Chorus]

OK, let's pretend like this never happened
Like I never had a dream of being a rapper
Like I didn't write raps in all of my classes
Like I never used to runaway into the blackness
Now lets pretend like it was all-good
Like I didn't live starring in a notebook
Like I did the things I probably knew I should
But I didn't have neighbors that's why they call it hood
Now lets pretend like I ain't got a name
Before they ever called me B.o.B or a.k.a Bobby Ray
I'm talking back before the mixtapes
Before the videos and the deals and the fame
Before they ever once compared me to Andre
Before I ever got Myspace
Before they ever noticed my face
So let's just pretend and make wishes out of airplanes

[Chorus]

(And it seems like yesterday it was just a dream, but those days are gone they're just memories)

Let's pretend Marshall Mathers never picked up a pen
Let's pretend things would've been no different
Pretend he procrastinated had no motivation
Pretend he just made excuses that
Was so paper thin they could blow away wit the wind
Marshall you never gone make it,
Makes no sense to play the game it ain't no way that'll you win
Pretend he just stand out side all day and play with his friends
Pretend he even had a friend to say was his friend
And it wasn't time to move in school no changing again
He wasn't socially awkward but as strange as a kid
He had a father and his mother wasn't crazy as sh-t
And he never dreamed he can ripped stadiums he just lazy as shit
F-ck a talent show in the gymnasium bitch
You won't amount to sh-t quit day dreaming kid
You need to get ya cranium check you thinking like an alien
It just ain't realistic
Now pretend they ain't just make him angry with this sh-t
And there was no one he could even aim when he's pissed with
And his alarm went off to wake him but he didn't make it to the rap Olympics
Slept through his plane and he missed it
He's gonna have a hard time explaining to Haley and Laney these food stamps and W-I-C shit
Cause he never risked sh-t he hoped and he wished it
But it didn't fall in his lap he ain't even here he pretends that

[Chorus]

My Opinion:I'm probably the only person in the world who's bothered by this, but it annoys me that the line is "Can we pretend that airplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars" includes the word like. Why take a perfectly good metaphor and turn it into a redundant simile? Airplanes are already like shooting stars. There's no need to pretend. It would make sense to pretend airplanes are shooting stars and simply remaining silent instead of singing like would keep the cadence of the song intact.

Oh well. Otherwise it's a deep and moving song about how rough life is for successful musicians.

General Comment:I don't even like B.O.B. or Hayley, but those lyrics are very touching, I can understand the pain he feels. Dammit, it's not about art anymore and even they are aware of it. Ironically, that song is pretty viral/mainstream due to the "politics".
I give B.O.B. my respect for saying it out loud.

My Interpretation:I love this song. It's so much deeper than most of the popular crap out there these days.

I agree with what this song being about how music has changed. I also think the 'airplanes' part is about the difference between real and superficial things. He's saying, you can pretend airplanes are stars and make a wish on them. If you don't know the difference, why does it matter? You can live your life (or, in his case, make music) under a mask that conceals who you are and pretend you're getting the most out of it instead of being true to yourself.

At least, that's how I see it.

General Comment:It seems to me that the chorus of this song was inspired by the Billy Bragg song "A New England" which contains the lyrics:-

"I saw two shooting stars last night
I wished on them but they were only satellites
Is it wrong to wish on space hardware
    I wish, I wish, I wish you'd care"

A cover of version of the song was a number 7 UK hit for Kirsty MacColl in 1984.

General Comment:At first I absolutely hated this song 'cause everyone would sing it and it was so annoying. But now after I give it some time I feel like there's more behind the lyrics than what appears to be.

When I first heard this I was like why would someone sing about airplanes? But when you really listen to B.o.B.'s raps you can tell that he really misses the days where everything wasn't just about the money and fame and stuff. Hayley is just such a good addition to the song. I think they go really good together musically.

General Comment:I think this song is about B.O.B and everyone else trying to make their dream come true. But it's about luck a lot of the time so whenever he got a chance he could really use a wish right then. But he didn't see any shooting stars so he said, "What can I loose? I'll wish on airplanes."

    Wish right now
    Wish right now"

damn..I truly understand & 'feel' what they say.
big kudos to the lyrics, it really 'speaks' to me now!
fuck this so-called "mature, grown-up, adult" world if it's only about money-and-dirty-politics!
i'd rather die and maybe go to another life/dimension.

General Comment:OK, I think when they say "Can we pretend that Airplanes in the night time are shooting star", they mean like shooting stars are not-so-common, so when you go out at night, you'll see airplanes in the night sky and they kinda look like shooting star, even though they're not.
