In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. I think this song is about the obvious: drunk girls. But I think it's more interesting that he goes a bit deeper than that. I think its about drunkness reflecting true human nature instead of people conforming to social norms. For example when he says "Just 'cause I'm shallow doesn't mean that I'm heartless", I think he is saying that just because hes going after attractiveness doesn't mean hes a bad person. He then follows that up with "Just 'cause I'm heartless doesn't mean that I'm mean" is referencing that even though he may be heartless in terms of not wanting a relationship with the women he is fraternizing with, he isn't being mean, as both parties (drunk girl and himself) want the physical release that comes with, for lack of a better term, hooking up.

I agree that is sounds like "abhorrently wild." I also feel like the line makes the most sense with "abhorrently" in there.

Two things:
During the chorus of "drunk boys" after : it comes back, but it's never the same, I think he sings: drunk boys love such women for free
At the end, I think it goes: "just be honest with me, honestly, honestly," instead of just three honestly's, but I could be mishearing it. The whole section is a mess without knowing the words before hand, so kudos on picking out the "unless" line.
I think we can safely say that James Murphy's lyrics in general are a mess if you do not know them beforehand, haha. I have spent the last few hours doing the rest of the album, and I seriously just want to ask him if he knows what consonants actually are.<br /> <br /> Now that you mention it, I think there are words before the "honestly"s, but I think he might be saying "tell me honestly, honestly, honestly," and the first one is just "honest-ly" with the syllables separated and some emphasis on the "t." I honestly (pun intended, of course) have no idea, though.
