For a thousand days
You've been staring away
Are you faint
Are you thinking
Crack a smile and wink
It doesn't scare me away

Hit the brakes
I feel like cruising with you too

So I gaze
In your eyes
And I wonder
Can you take me up
Your hands that I'm under
Come wake me up soon

Take a bow and wave
As we carry away
It was great
But I'm not leaving
Crack a smile and wink
It still doesn't scare me away

Hit the brakes
I feel like cruising with you, too

So I gaze in your eyes
And I wonder, can you take me up
Your hands that I'm under
Come wake me up

For a thousand days
We could get carried away
Are you in
Are you in
Are you in(are you in)
(I'd give anything)
(I'd give anything for you)

So I gaze in your eyes
And I wonder can you take me up
Your hands that I'm under
Come wake
So I gaze in your eyes
And I wonder can you take me up

General Comment:I thought this song as about having someone in your life who is clearly in some kind of depression or insisting that everything is OK when in reality, when they "wink and smile" at you, you aren't convinced and the "1,000" days just the period of time that this has been going on.

General Comment:I know, I know... Deftones lyrics can be translated in fifty million ways and the band probably finds it amazing how far off the lyrics can go... but I can't help myself :)

I do think this song is about Chi. I think Chino wants to cruise and go up with Chi, wherever he is in this unconscious state.

I liken the 976-Evil thing to the car crash. The movie was based on some evil phone line from hell where bad shit happens to people when they call the number or something like that... it's been a while since I saw it. That car crash with Chi was some unexpected event that really messed up a lot of things. It was a negative event that affected Chi, anyone close to him, the band, and even his fans... and we're all waiting for him to come back.

General Comment:This song is about, IMO, someone finding attraction in a particular girl, and wondering if it is worth it and thinking of what he wants. Then he goes and says yes mentally. Almost has if another song is supposed to be a continuation of it. Or certain parts of the album being the results if he ask her.

General Comment:I personally don't think this track is about Chi. I can somewhat see why one might think so, but I don't agree. Alot of Deftones songs are about sex, as I'm sure you are all aware, but 976 is a number often used for phone sex hotlines and other hotlines that charge more than most others. But the Deftones are a complicated band. They may give a song that has nothing to do with sex, a title that does have to do with sex. Their music is open for interpretation, but it all has a special meaning to each member, whatever meaning that may be, and they don't wanna make it obvious what that meaning is to them, because then it would take away from the sentimental value each song has to the individual artist in the band. Especially Chino. This is just my opinion, but it really makes a lot of sense to me. Also, I don't believe that the Deftones made any track on this album ABOUT Chi, they made the entire album FOR Chi, always having Chi in mind and the emotion that goes along with the hardship of what they are all experiencing. Which is why it's such an incredible record. Hope that all makes sense to somebody.

My Interpretation:(Please see my posts on the previous tracks for some context. This album tells one continuing story. That's how I like to look at it anyway. Nobody could really know what Chino is writing about!)

This song is sung from the Prince’s perspective. He addresses his father:
“For a thousand days, you’ve been staring away
Are you phased or are you thinking?
Your crack a smile and wave, doesn’t scare me away”

The Prince and the King have aged in the wake of apocalypse. The Prince feels incredible guilt for destroying everything his father loved, but he still tries to mend their relationship.

“Hit the brakes, I feel like cruising with you…too…so I gaze
In your eyes and I wonder [later, “and I want her”]
    Can you take me on?”

The Prince wants to spend some time with his father. He remembers how his father loved “cruising the city” on Earth so long ago (see “Sextape”). The son acknowledges the absence of the queen, who died in the destruction of Earth, and he wonders if his father can handle having the son in his life at all after he has ruined everything.

“Your haze that I’m under, come and wake me up”
Soon take a bow and wave, as you’re carried away.

The Prince is suffering from guilt and begs for forgiveness from his father, who will be “carried away.” This is an interesting concept considering the father has already died (between “Royal” and “CMND/CTRL”). The only meaning I can gather is that the father completely gave up his mortality during “Rocket Skates.” He has made the journey from human to god back to human and now he is dying.

“It was great but I’m not leaving, Your crack a smile and wave still doesn’t scare me away
For a thousand days we could get carried away…are you in?”

Perhaps this coming death isn’t the end?

“I’m anxious and I feel like cruising with you.”
The Prince wants some father-son time. In "Beauty School" it was asserted that the king/father has a phone with which he uses to call the Earth. If he ever wants to forgive the son/prince, the son can be reached at 976-EVIL. He is evil because he represents the evil deeds of man that destroyed the Earth (see "Prince").

General Comment:just one to point one thing out, which willium47 pointed out already once.

Deftones usually dont state what a song is about, they sometimes state what it meant for them, but there is no strict meaning of any of their songs. So if you wana discuss it, what it means, i suggest just say what it means to you, what thoughts, pictures you get when you listen to it. And thats what i also love about them, its music which makes you think.

For me this song its totally about a love...

Song Meaning:I think, as most of you are saying, that most of this song can be about Chi. But I couldn't help thinking that it is about a girl. I've noticed that quite a few of Deftones songs can be interpreted as being about sex.

Hit the brakes I feel like
    Cruising with you too
(He sees a girl and stops his car to pick her up)
So I gaze in your eyes
And I wonder can you take me on?
(Thinking about having sex with her and if she can "handle" him)

I know it is more logical that this song is about Chi but Deftones songs can mean so many different things, and it's all up to the listener; that's how they WANT it to be, up to how you view the lyrics.
