"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
She said "hello mister, pleased to meet ya"
I wanna hold her, I wanna kiss her
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Yeah, hey
Hey, yeah
Hey my lover, my lady river
Can I take ya, take ya higher
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Yeah, hey
Hey, yeah
Yeah, hey
Hey, hey
Gonna hold ya, gonna kiss ya in my arms
Gonna take ya away from harm
Gonna hold ya, gonna kiss ya in my arms
Gonna take ya away from harm
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Yeah, hey
Hey, hey
Yeah, hey
Hey, hey
Hey, hey
I wanna hold her, I wanna kiss her
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Yeah, hey
Hey, yeah
Hey my lover, my lady river
Can I take ya, take ya higher
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane
Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
Magical

Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
well his big jet plane, is just a metaphor for his really big cock, i could be very wrong, but i also could be very right, i think. Be my lover, my lady river(she's wet) can i take ya, take ya higher?!?!? It means (to me) that he has a really big cock, and he is gonna have great sex with this beautiful chick that he just met...
that is exactly what i thought!
its just one massive sexual innuendo about his massive cock.

could this lady that he speaks of also be a prostitute because it seems that they just met from the first line "hello mister, please to meet ya."?
omg, im so glad im not the only one that thought this....
Lmao...I suppose that's one way to see it.
Case can be made, but the general tone of the song seems very gentle and loving. Not that having a large penis is excludes tender thoughts but seems more about cuddling and caressing her and "taking her away from harm" and the plane is a metaphor that they can get far away together.
@samzters it's so fucken sexy.

I believe it's more to do with meeting someone for the first time - But not as in an introductory sense - More like when your going about your every day routine and someone truly catches your attention and the world around you seems to stop for a brief moment but you realise your obvious and try to pretend to be normal and in-turn miss an opportunity to find out if the attraction is real - It's when that person can bend your mind for days - When the slightest of sensations such as the smell of a perfume can be distinctively be embedded in your mind for weeks.
As expressed in the opening line:
"She said 'hello mister, please to meet ya'; I wanna hold her, I wanna kiss her; She smelled of daisies, smelled of daisies; She drive me crazy, drive me crazy"
It also seems to create the feeling that this infatuation is towards someone quite lower in social class or society than the... The rest of the song in my eyes continues to play that tune and goes on to wishing the mind could catch up to you quicker in those situations and act on them, but instead life leaves you wondering how it could have played out.
"Be my lover, my lady river; Can I take ya, take ya higher" "Gonna take her for a ride on a big jet plane........." "Gonna hold ya, gonna kiss ya in my arms; Gonna take ya away from harm"
@LyricallyParable Spot on!
it's about loving someone, protecting them and showing them the world in something big and exciting :) such a beautiful song, i love it!
i better not think about dicks and sex when i listen to this song now. sure, that could be one interpretation of it, but it seems to me that it means more than that.
"gonna take ya away from harm." some guy who banged a girl he just met probably wouldn't think such a sentimental thought. "i wanna hold her, i wanna kiss her." this line could extend to sex, but on the surface it doesn't. he just wants to be with her.
unfortunately, it looks like pretty much everything else in the song can go either towards sex or whatever a more sweeter meaning to the song is. i'll be pissed if all i think about this song now when i listen to it has to do with sex.
ahh god i love this song, it makes me cry like everytime :P
The song is about a girl he met at a riverthat he liked. "Be my lover, my lady river" But he was on tour so had to leave her behind He ended up righting this song for her. So no samzters it is NOT about sex. They even say it's about a girl when he's interviewed. See for yourselves, youtube.com/watch Any way that's the meaning of big jet plane.
it's just about wanting someone. he puts it in simple yet beautiful words.
In this interview he says what the song is about:

Lucky girl for getting such a beautiful song dedicated to her from Angus!
I feel like the line "hello mister, pleased to meet ya" I want to hold her, I want to kiss her." Is him speaking to her father in the sense of asking if he can ask her to marry her.
Then the line; "Be my lover, My lady river But can i take ya, Take ya higher." Is him asking her then the rest is him telling her how he's going to take her to bigger and better places and that he's going to do for her. BUT that's just what come into my mind when I listen to it.
After a deep analysis, I have come to the conclusion that this piece of fine art is a direct product of Mr Angus Stone's BBC and his SEXUAL encounters. As a true admirer of his work, I fantasise him as a pilot, as I ride his big jet plane, soaring through the sky, wind in my hair. Ecstacy.
We are about to experience a little turbulence. Watch out, Angus.
