I was pulling out my hair
The day I cut the deal
Chemically calm
Was I meant to feel happy?
But my life was just about to change

One life pretending to be
The cat who got the cream
Oh, everybody said
"Marina is a dreamer"
People like to tell you what you're gonna be
It's not my problem if you don't see what I see
And I do not give a damn if you don't believe
My problem is my problem
That I never am happy
It's my problem, it's my problem
That I never will succeed

Are you satisfied with an average life?
Do I need to lie to make my way in life?

High achiever don't you see
Baby, nothing comes for free
They say I am a control freak
Driven a greed to succeed
Nobody can stop me

Cause it's my problem
If I want to pack up and run away
It's my business if I feel the need to
Smoke and drink and swear
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

Are you satisfied with an average life?
Do I need to lie to make my way in life?
Are you satisfied with an average life?
Do I need to lie to make my way in life?
Are you satisfied with an easy ride?
Once you cross the line
Will you be satisfied?

Sad inside, in this life, unsatisfied, praying
Sad inside, in this life, unsatisfied, waiting

Are you satisfied with an average life
Do I need to fly to make my way in life

Are you satisfied with an easy ride
Once you cross the line
Will you be satisfied?

Are you satisfied?
Are you satisfied?
Are you satisfied?
Are you satisfied?
Are you satisfied?
Are you satisfied?
Are you satisfied?
Are you satisfied?

My Interpretation:i feel like this song is about taking things too far, just to have a change. sometimes life is average and people want to change it by adding bad things to it to feel satisfied, like feeling down on yourself, feeling like nobody understands you, like you need to feel insecure and live your life in black and white just so you can be different from the people living it in color. and the people living life in color dont undersand who you are at all no matter how close you are. they consider you a dreamer.

Song Meaning:I think this song is about impostor syndrome,

believing that no matter how much you succeed in life, it will always been down to luck or good timing, not because of actual ability and that you are actually a fraud to others.

The lines: High achiever don't you see
Baby, nothing comes for free- make this obvious i think

General Comment:I think the start is about her getting a deal, as in a music deal, and the bit about the cat getting the cream and what you're expected to be is about feeling the pressure to conform now her music would be marketed and how she didn't see it like that, how it's no different to a chef getting a job at a prestigious restaurant. she is worried who will influence her album and how. and it's clearly about power relations, how people think it is empowering to artists to get more studio time but really it may lead to comprimise and if she refuses to fall in line she might have to sell out her integrity to save her career and she always says the diamonds are her fans, so i think she is really genuine and she will fight to keep her artwork original but it doesn't mean she'll be happy just because she's got the gig. humans always crave more than what they got no matter what, that's part of the american dream, but it's not a virtue. I also think the bit about an easy ride and crossing the line is about the strive to succeed and not having the confidence in yourself, stop you taking chances and what are you really in it for? once you make it will you be happy or will you keep your stuff to yourself when you want to share it and live it? i also think the bit about crossing the line could be about going back on your promises like a politicians and knowing once you start this journey you have probably started to sell out but she wouldn't be happy doing anything else so this is what she wants and maybe she has come to terms with the fact that people may try and turn her into a business but she is still just a person with feelings and notions, and desires. i don't think she ever really says anything with malice but when she says are you satisfied on repeat i think she may be asking her audience if they are satisfied with her as an artist as i think she knows her shows may change her.

General Comment:I've listened to this song really carefully several times, and I really think that it sounds more like this:

    Sad inside
    In this life
    Unsatisfied praying

    Sad inside
    In this life
    Unsatisfied waiting

Because she stated in interviews that she is obsessed with her dream, and her determination to reach her goal is evident in the whole album. Why would she then state that she is satisfied waiting? Also, it sounds more like she's saying UNsatisfied.

    Just my opinion.

General Comment:This song is NOT a feminist anthem, lol. It's full of girl-on-girl hate. Which really disappointed me, I was totally psyched about Marina until I heard this song! I still think she's great but this song let me down.

To quote somebody else who said it wonderfully:

"I can't stand to hear a woman say she thinks likes a guy, or hates women because they're all catty. That's misogyny. The very fact that you, as a woman, think differently than how a socially-stereotyped woman is supposed to think is proof that our gender "norms" are fucking us over.

Women are not all alike. Some of us like football. Some of us like talking on the phone. Some of us like religion. Some of us are emotional. Some of us speak three languages. Some of us have boyfriends. Some of us have girlfriends. Some of us wear lipstick. Some of us don't shave our pits. Some of us have kids. Some of us worry that we'll drop our best friend's baby.

Now please stop claiming that you don't act like a woman. It doesn't make you a special snowflake, it makes you a perpetrator of misogyny."

General Comment:This song has a huge amount of meaning for me, because I totally agree with it. I think Marina is singing about how she needs her life to be something more than what other people have, she will never be satisfied with an average life, but she is happy to wait for her life to become extraodinary. I think that is the simple analysis, and that is exactly how I feel about life, and that's why I struggle not to cry everytime I hear this song.

Another analysis I think I can see is that the song is in two voices, one (presumably Marina) who wants a great, above average life, and another who just sits around withing for things to happen. I think Marina is the one who says lines like 'High achiever, don't you see?
    Baby, nothing comes for free
They say I'm a control freak
Driven by a greed to succeed
Nobody can stop me' and, definately
'Are you satisfied with an easy ride?
Once you cross the line will you be satisfied?'

And the other voice, which I think could be another side of Marina, like she is arguing with herself, has lines like
    'Sad inside
    In this life
    I'm satisfied praying
    Sad inside
    In this life
    I'm satisfied waiting'

The second voice is happy to let life unfold, but they still want something amazing to happen, but the first voice wants to make it happen, because she's not satisfied with living like this. I think the second voice is the one who says the 'it's my problem' lines.

I absolutely love this song, it really gets me every time, it's basicly my anthem, because I want to decide which voice I am, because right now I'm the second, and I don't like that, and I think that's what the song it about.
Just my opinion though, comments welcome.
