I've been waiting for months, waiting for years, waiting for you to change.
Aw, but there ain't much that's dumber, there ain't much that's dumber
than pinning your hopes on a change in another.
And I, yeah I still need you, but what good's that gonna do?
Needing is one thing, and getting- getting's another.
So I been sitting around, wasting my time, wondering what you been doing.
Aw, and it ain't real forgiving, it ain't real forgiving sitting here picturing someone else living.
And I, yeah I still need you, but what good's that gonna do?
Needing is one thing, and getting- getting's another.
I've been hoping for months, hoping for years, hoping I might forget.
Aw but it don't get much dumber, it don't get much dumber
than trying to forget a girl when you love her.
And I, yeah I still need you, but what good's that gonna do?
Needing is one thing, and getting- getting's another.
When? When? Why not now? Why not me? Why not me?
Why not me? Why not me?

i think this song is about giving up on a relationship. the fact that ur with someone doesnt mean u dont expect them to change. anyone will tell u thats no way to start a relationship and a terrible place to be but it doesnt mean u dont love the other person and want to be with them. its just maybe not whats best for u. so u try to do whats right but....thats not always easy to do.
every verse is in a different time frame- the first is realization and break up, the second is doubt and reasoning and the third takes place a long while from then, when he realizes he just cant get past it.
"I've been waiting for months, waiting for years, waiting for you to change.
Aw, but there ain't much that's dumber, there ain't much that's dumber
than pinning your hopes on a change in another."
hes been in this relationship forever. and maybe he always expected some change from the other person. he hopes their relationship will be better and he'll b happier when that happens but realizes thats prob a dumb way to go about it. he realizes hell never get that. so he finely gives up on waiting ends it.
"So I been sitting around, wasting my time, wondering what you been doing.
Aw, and it ain't real forgiving, it ain't real forgiving sitting here picturing someone else living."
he after the breakup, trying to get over that person but cant help but wonder what shes doing, a natural thing when u stop seeing someone uve been so close to for so long. and u start forgetting why u ended it, why u cant be with them instead of imagining where they are and what theyre doing right now.
"I've been hoping for months, hoping for years, hoping I might forget.
Aw but it don't get much dumber, it don't get much dumber
than trying to forget a girl when you love her."
its been a while but nothing has changed. hes still in love with her. he cant forget. if at first he thought it was dumb to stay with her and wait for her to change, now hes finding it dumb to try and forget her.
and hes right. ending a relationship before u fall out of love, even if its the right thing to do, is practically impossible to get over. our culture teaches us love is everything, love is enough and nothing else matters. its not true, but how do u forget about someone u love so much?
The repeated "Don't get much dumber" actually changes meaning between the 1st and 3rd verses. In the 1st verse, he means that he knows she's not gonna change her mind. But in the last verse it means that its dumb to hide your feelings. And the way he sings that line goes perfectly with the lyrics, kind of says, "You know what, I'm gonna go tell her" It leaves us with a hopeful meaning at the end.
Starting at the calmer part, you hear a plane taking off. Then you hear a little girl say "Dada", and a older girl yell "Whoo!". I think they're at a beach. I believe there's a dinner party afterwards, because of the clanking dishes and people talking. THEN you can here "It's a Disaster" in the background, though in it he sings, "Yea it's all we got! Caught in the moment!". It's very hard to tell that line. And lastly, you hear tides at the beach.
The song lyrics alone are pretty self explanatory, though there are some parts that are worth looking into. The first section is angst. It's what he feels like saying to her; How he'll never have her, what she's done to him. Though it's the second part that's interesting. It's a "shedding of skin", if you will. It's what he's really thinking, what it's like in his brain. I think all the background tracks are past, present, and future, in a sense.
This is of course my interpretation. Putting emotions into words is HARD. It's a very beautiful song, and I can't wait till the video comes out!
What really blew my mind a few days ago whilst driving home on CR 209 (a beautiful dark quiet country highway) was that this song is actually in 6/8ths time for the most part, but after the drum roll during the squelching guitar the song changes into 7/8th's time for the pretty part.
You can tell the difference if you count the beats and simply by the fact that one kick note is added per measure compared to the rest of the song's signature. It's incredibly smooth and absolutely blew me away when I realized it.
This song means so much to me, as does this album. I'd definitely have to dub this my favorite song if I had to choose on the spot.
Anyways, I would love to discuss this song with Damian... "So I been sitting around, wasting my time, wondering what you been doing. Aw, and it ain't real forgiving, it ain't real forgiving sitting here picturing someone else living." A lyrical genius that man is. Thank you Damian for composing this masterpiece.
