One's not enough
I won't stop 'til I've given you up
Here, right as I am, it's hard having fun
It's much easier said than it's done
Hold me like before
Hold me like you used to
Control me like you used to
No
You don't move me anymore
And I'm glad that you don't
'cause I can't have you anymore
But I thought you should know
You don't move me anymore
And I'm glad that you don't
Because I can't take it anymore
Oh
The room's still now when I'm lying
'cause the well of the night has gone dry
When they ask to behave, I pay them no mind
Now I doubt if I'd have been so kind
Hold me like before
Hold me like you used to
Control me like you used to
No
You don't move me anymore
And I'm glad that you don't
'cause I can't have you anymore
But I thought you should know
You don't move me anymore
And I'm glad that you don't
Because I can't take it anymore
More
Hold me like before
Hold me like you used to
Hold me like before
Hold me like you used to
Hold me like before
Hold me like you used to
Control me like you used to
Hold me like before
Hold me like you used to
Control me like you used to
No
You don't move me anymore
And I'm glad that you don't
'cause I can't have you anymore
But I thought you should know
You don't move me anymore
And I'm glad that you don't
Because I can't take it anymore
But I found you should know
It feels like being tranquilized
I know the separation kills us so
But I won't stop falling like raindrops
Because I like it when you lose control
I won't stop 'til I've given you up
Here, right as I am, it's hard having fun
It's much easier said than it's done
Hold me like before
Hold me like you used to
Control me like you used to
No
You don't move me anymore
And I'm glad that you don't
'cause I can't have you anymore
But I thought you should know
You don't move me anymore
And I'm glad that you don't
Because I can't take it anymore

Hold me like you used to
Control me like you used to

1. "It's hard having fun" - especially in social situations, if everyone else is drinking, it's really not very fun at all
2. "Hold me like you used to / Control me" - the warm embrace of alcohol removing all the worries and social anxiety, and the control it can have over your actions
3. "You don't move me anymore / And I'm glad that you don't" - I finally realized, as the writer did, that alcohol just made me fell like crap and do stupid things, and I don't feel compelled to drink it anymore just because everyone else does.
4. "The room's still now when I'm lying/'cause the well of the night has gone dry" - anyone whose been really drunk knows how the room 'spins' (isn't still), and the "well of the night" - obvious allusion to "well drinks" at a bar going "dry" (a reference to an absence of alcohol)
I think the love interest bit refers to the infatuation the artist had with alcohol, and the feeling of loss when you separate yourself from something you "love", even if it's for all the right reasons.
Thanks for the post! I might put this on a CD for my friend in rehab.
No
You don't move me anymore
And I'm glad that you don't
'cause I can't have you anymore( I am hearing "cause I can't take it anymore")
But I thought you should know<---this whole part is a different section.
You don't move me anymore
And I'm glad that you don't
Because I can't take it anymore
Oh
hold me like before
hold me like you used to
CONTROL me like you used to
i adore yeasayer
like "i won't stop til i've given you up"
and the "hold me" thing is weird
but probably the most important thing is the last bit:
It feels like being tranquilized
I know the separation kills *us* so
But I won't stop falling like raindrops
Because I like it when *you* lose control
so i definitely see how it could go either way.
the first few times i heard it i immediately thought of my xgf.
It feels like being tranquilized
I know the separation kills *us* so
But I won't stop falling like raindrops
Because I like it when *you* lose control
"One's not enough. I won't stop 'til I've given you up." - the "narrator" clearly cannot drink in moderation, he can't 'have one drink' and stop, once he starts he continues into oblivion - alcoholism.
The "Hold me like before, hold me like you used to, control me like you used to" - inner turmoil. Even the tone of the music, accompanied with the lyrics, gives the image of the "narrator" as he longs for the comfort and solace that drunkenness provides, how much easier it is when the alcohol controls him, whatever troubles he has can disappear into that drunken haze, but ... "NO, you don't move me anymore" - him fighting back, fighting that urge, taking control.
As Svabi said, that last section is the alcohol pleading with him not to give it up, it "like's it when *you* lose control"
My favourite part "When they ask to behave I paid them no mind, now I doubt if I'd have been so kind" - referring to security/other people etc. when the drunk is making an ass of himself, paying no mind for anybody else, or how their actions impact upon others.
Now, on the other side of the fence, sober, he sees other drunks and the way they are acting, recognising this as his own previous behaviour, he understands the impact it has upon others, and doubts that if he were the security, he would have been so kind to himself, or other drunken idiots.
Definitely about alcoholism, but such is the magic of music/poetry, that it is open for interpretation, and multiple meanings.
but i agree completely.
