Look at the sky as the night descends
The rain is crashing down, I've hit another dead end
Just before I let hope slip away
A shadow is revealed, the devil shows his face

I'm scared to death and have myself to blame, I'm to blame
How did we end up fighting anyway?

You know, I used to search the sky and dream of where you were
I need you by my side, we can end this together
I know I promised you the world and still I let you down
I need you by my side and together we'll end this now

Look in my eyes! Am I shaking now?
I am all you fear, have I made myself clear?

Shut your mouth and finish what you've started
Boy, you haven't got the slightest idea
Just who I am and what I do for you
Don't you see that I am trying to save you?
Shut your mouth and finish what you've started

I'm scared to death and have myself to blame, no one else
How did we end up fighting anyway?

You know, I used to search the sky and dream of where you were
I need you by my side, we can end this together
I know I promised you the world and still I let you down
I need you by my side and together we'll end this now

As the last rays of sunlight fade, one killer chases another
Through the tangled madness of the city
A flash of steel announces the presence of his quarry
The stage is set, the night explodes...

You killed her you murderer
You have stripped me of the one that I love
Annabel, our Annabel
You have no clue what she's capable of...

I'm scared to death and have myself to blame
How did we end up fighting anyway?

You know, I used to search the sky and dream of where you were
I need you by my side, we can end this together
I know I promised you the world and still I let you down
I need you by my side and together we'll end this now

You'd better look behind you...

My Interpretation:Now, I know that Alesana maintains that The Emptiness and the songs on it are inspired by the works of Edgar Allen Poe, but I seriously doubt that Alesana are lacking in motivation or ability to either carry over the implied themes or to impose their own.
Sure, it's about a dude who kills his lady, but I think that even that may be a metaphor for something deeper.

I believe that the album (and this song specifically) are about struggling with jealousy. The story (as it reads at face value) is about The Artist thinking that Annabel is dead, going crazy with the thought, massacring everyone around, becoming obsessed with The Thespian, realizing that he was the murderer, and then (spoiler alert) realizing that he was mistaken and getting himself killed by Annabel.

The way I relate this to 'jealousy' is as such:
The Artist - who could be anyone - is afraid that he has lost Annabel, a la a breakup. I see murder as a symbol for ultimate loss - it's a loss which you can never undo. He tears himself apart to figure out how it happened, and in the blind, confused fury and pain, blames the people around him. He maybe didn't massacre, but instead mistreated, the people who are close to him, losing (killing) them in the process. He becomes obsessed with this Thespian, who he believes is another man who has stolen Annabel from him.

It's classic paranoid jealousy - The Thespian, for lack of self-confidence, fears losing the perfect girl he doesn't think he deserves. He believes that he is not able to offer her all the things that he thinks she wants and projects his inadequacies onto another man. He hates the Thespian, when in actuality the Thespian is just a manifestation of the things the Artist wishes he could be.

But then Annabel kills - or dumps, whatever - the Artist out of fear of what he has become [and self preservation]. The Artist realizes only too late that he was afraid of all the wrong things, and that his jealousy drove him so mad as to do just the thing (losing Annabel) that he was trying to prevent.

    And in this song specifically:

Shawn sings: "I'm scared to death and have myself to blame, no one else
How did we end up fighting anyway?"
Even while he chases the Thespian, the Artist somehow knows that he is to blame; his only quarrel is with himself.

and Dennis screams: "Boy, you haven't got the slightest idea
Just who I am and what I do for you
Don't you see that I am trying to save you?
Shut your mouth and finish what you've started"
The Thespian is just trying to help the Artist to the conclusion, that they are the same person. He is saying 'finish what you started' but what the Artist started (in this song) is an attempt to kill the Thespian. The Thespian turns himself over because he really does want whats best for the Artist, and knows that that cannot be achieved while the Artist is still obsessed with the Thespian.

I have also noticed that (for the most part, if not entirely?) it seems that Shawn sings from the Artist's perspective and Dennis screams for the Thespian... It makes what the Thespian says seem more sinister, but remember that the whole album is FROM the Artist's perspective. If the Thespian's parts were sung, they would not seem as sinister
Also the music video for the thespian shows The Thespian not murdering but embracing Annabel at the end. Just sayin.

    anyways, yeah. that's my interpretation.

General Comment:Even though the Interlude isn't on these lyrics I have to say its amazing.

The artists dropping to his knees thinking the Thespian has won has beaten him.
On the verge of knowing he will be together with her Again as the Thespian closes int to kill him

Then Annabel's voice appears and he comes back to being the Artist.
She consoles him speaks sweetly that she loves him then her voice distorts and grows suttle and angry distorted and she kills the man she loves before he can ever go back into the Thespian perhaps becoming the thespian herself murdering him and by killing she could cease to be Annabel.
By listneing to her voice and the song Annabel she is consumed by anger just he was the artists and everything he was completely dissapeared leaving only Annabel as the new The Thespian.

Just thought that was a nice diffrent outlook.

also I love how the lyric is
You killed her you murderer, you have stripped me of the one that I love
    Annabel, our Annabel.

Showing it is indeed a eternal Struggle between The Artist and Thespian.
Just by that lyric in turn I think how it talks about betrayal is this.

Annabel could have never betrayed the Artist.

Maybe The Thespian inside the Artist grew jealous stronger saw The Artist with Annabel so the Thespian took over and killed her in his mind.
It could also be that Annabel did infact betray The Artist and the thespian was created to kill her because The Artist loves Annabel so much he could never kill her so the Thespian was created to kill her.

There are just many ways to interpret this.

Song Meaning:The Artist Comes to grips with Annabel's Death and realises that he will not be able to be at peace until he finds the Thespian, who is the man who killed her, and Return the favor by Killing him. He Spends the day planning the attack and by night he tells himself to get back into the Psycho He was at the Tavern(in the song The Murderer). When he finally finds the Thespian, He stalks him into the woods, and they both charge at each other like wild beasts slashing and stabbing each other violently. Eventually the Artist falls to his knees infront of the thespian and he pushes every ounce of strength he has, but his legs wont move, and as the Thespian is about to Finish him off, He hears Annabel's voice saying "Everything is going to be okay my love, follow my voice, Everything will be fine, Its all over now(as she says its all over now, Her voice sounds pretty angry)" << this interlude is only available if you buy the full album. GO TO THE SONG ANNABEL, I have posted the meaning to it too. (:

General Comment:"The Artist spends the day planning his attack and the evening hunting for the Thespian. A flash of light from the blade of the Thespian stings his eyes and the two engage in a fight to the death. Armed with only his hands and the fleeting memories of his Annabel, the Artist vows revenge." -Alesana

General Comment:The whole album is based on Edgar Allan Poe poems with an Alesana mix added to it. So basically what I've figured out is the guys lover, Annabel, is killed. He is so shocked about her death that he starts going crazy. I believe that he goes after her murderer and kills him, and might have killed other people too? I was a little confused there. Then he can't live with the pain of Annabel being dead, so he decides to commite suicide, but suddenly Annabel appears. He can't believe that she's there and he's happy and just wants to be with her. I think she's mad at him for killing and that he has no shame about it. And I think he knows she's mad, so he tries to run from her or something. Or he just tries to work it out. Haha, I was also confused there. Ha ha. And then the last song I believe is in the eyes of Annabel and she kills him for his wrong doings. So yeah. That's what I think.
