A warning to the people, the good and the evil
This is war
To the soldier, the civilian, the martyr, the victim
This is war

It's the moment of truth and the moment to lie
And the moment to live and the moment to die
The moment to fight, the moment to fight,
To fight, to fight, to fight

To the right to the left
We will fight to the death
To the edge of the earth,
It's a brave new world from the last to the first
To the right, to the left,
We will fight to the death
To the edge of the earth
It's a brave new world, it's a brave new world

(Whoa oh, whoa oh)

A warning to the prophet, the liar, the honest
This is war
To the leader, the pariah, the victor, the messiah
This is war

It's the moment of truth and the moment to lie
And the moment to live and the moment to die
The moment to fight, the moment to fight,
To fight, to fight, to fight

To the right, to the left,
We will fight to the death
To the edge of the earth,
It's a brave new world from the last to the first
To the right, to the left,
We will fight to the death
To the edge of the earth
It's a brave new world, it's a brave new world, it's a brave new world

I do believe in the light, raise your hands up to the sky
The fight is done, the war is won, lift your hands towards the sun
Towards the sun, (it's the moment of truth and the moment to lie
It's the moment to live and the moment to die, the moment to fight)
Towards the sun,
Towards the sun, (it's the moment of truth and the moment to lie
It's the moment to live and the moment to die, the moment to fight)
The war is won (to fight, to fight, to fight, to fight)

To the right, to the left,
We will fight to the death
To the edge of the earth,
It's a brave new world from the last to the first
To the right, to the left,
We will fight to the death
To the edge of the earth
It's a brave new world, it's a brave new world, it's a brave new world

A brave new world
The war is won
The war is won
A brave new world

General Comment:This song is obviously anti-war. watch the video. The beginning of the video has "This is a song about peace. The video also shows every humvee, battleship, weapon, helo, bomber, being collected up in the sky. In "War is a Racket" by Marine Corps General Smedley Butler, it states "That is for all nations to get together and scrap every ship, every gun, every rifle, every tank, every war plane. Even this, if it were possible, would not be enough."

My Opinion:The song is about informing people about the war and how we need to keep fighting to stop the war and that we aren’t going down without a fight.
It is saying one thing about a person then saying the opposite, e.g. the good and the evil, or the liar and the honest, and it is saying that it doesn’t matter who you are, there is still war going on.
The message is a warning to everybody about how war affects everyone and how we need to keep fighting to gain peace.
Released on December the 8th, 2009.
    Sung by Jarred Leto.
They may have written and sung this song because the war in Iraq and Afghanistan was still ongoing in 2009.

In the video clip of the song ‘This is War’ by ’30 seconds to Mars’, The music video shows US soldiers fighting in Afghanistan and all the throughout the video, all of the army tanks and helicopters fly to one spot, and in the end all the pieces of the machinery of war make a pyramid, this is called a Celtic triad (pyramid or triangle shape). It is often seen as a sign of rebuilding and reconstruction. The three points can represent various beliefs such as ‘past, present and future’ or ‘Creator, sustainer and destroyer’ or ‘Creation, preservation and destruction’.

The message is that the war has been fought and won and this is now time to rebuild for a brighter future and a brave new world.

Thanks for reading and please do not copy, from holly
P.S. i wrote this all for my school assessment!

General Comment:First i would like to state to all that i am not a religous person in the slightest i am of all things a taoist(which is a philosophy not a religon). Although i do pride myself on trying to learn about all religons to help me relate with a wider variety of people.

I read through all of the previous comments because i was interested and a common theme i found was religon, which is understandable, but more specifically is the ascension. Now i do not claim to know any religous book by heart but the armegadon is something i have read extensively about and i hope you all realize something. The bible clearly states that not all christians will rise to heaven. In the bible it states that only a thousand people from each of the thirteen tribes will be taken to heaven before the battle between heaven and hell... and neutrals will start.

Truth is good and evil is all relative to the person/people categorizeing it. What i find good can be your evil and what you find good i might consider evil. Example a woman breaks into a store and steals food and drinks. She gets caught and the store owner thinking of only theirself and their belongings presses charges and sues the woman. Now if we look into the womans past we find out that she is a single mother with 5 kids and just recently got fired from her job because one of her kids was severely sick and needed to be taken to the hospital. Now clearly not having a job, plus she has bills, now medical bills, she has no money for food and refuses to let her kids grow up in the streets. She decides to rob a store but will only take what she needs... Who is in the wrong? I'll let you decide.

"To the soldier, the civilian, the martyr, the victim...... to the prophet, the liar, the honest... To the leader, the pariah, the victim, the messiah"
Think back on your life we have all at one time considered ourselves multiple things out of this list. Whether it was knowingly or unknowingly that is for you to remember but we have all done it. This is not a warning to some god, antichrist, or fake. This is a warning for us.

When "This is War" ends and continues into "100 Suns" think about the words being said. I believe he is trying to get across the point of we need to stop bothering ourselves with things that do not matter. Stop worrying about looking like what the mainstream is trying to make us think we need to look like stop worrying bout buying the newest technology stop worrying about what people think just be you. Nothing matters but the beating of our hearts... stop ubsessing about whether or not your clothes are in style and be thankful that we live to see another sun rise, sun set, flower bloom, phase of the moon, just be thankful your alive. Our hearts still beat and we can still make a difference.

Despite what we have had shoved down our throats since the birth of tv and mainstream... one person CAN still make a difference. ONE PERSON CAN START A REVOLUTION. I am not talking bout god or jesus or any other deity im talking bout one of us. Just another lonely human being that has risen from whatever life they have led that decided to no longer be spoonfed bull shit and stand up for what is right. It can be anyone but it can just as easily be noone.

I've lived a difficult life and came to a very simple realization. There is one point in everyones life were they will have to make a choice. A choice that can change everything. Their will eventually be a time that you will find something you care bout very deeply and will have to decide whether or not they will stand for what they believe is right...

I am makeing my stand. I will fight for what i believe in and i will fight for everyones freedom against conventional thought and practice. I hope others will find it worthy of a cause to stand with me against the tide of ignorance so as to see a better tomorrow for everyone. I hope you all find what is worthy to you to stand up for, and i hope you all have the courage to stand whether it be alone or with an army at your side. Despite what we are told the war isnt coming its here and we will all be tested.

The forces of light and dark are gathering.
    This is war.

    Sincerely,

    The Elementalist

General Comment:I liked this song but now I am kind of sick of it because there are so many bad AMVs that use this. Idk why it's so popular in the anime fan community.

At any rate, the song mentions "the people, the good and the evil, the Soldier, The Civilian, The Martyr, The Victim, the prophet, the liar, the honest, the leader, the pariah, the victim, the messiah" When he says "This is war", I think he means something that transcends all of these things. Because he's talking "to" all of these people. What that is, I don't really know. But it sounds cool that there's some great cause that everyone needs to be fighting for, right now.

My Interpretation:Generally, the song is mentioned two to four different things at once.

"The good and the evil", "The soldier, the civilian, the martyr, the victim", "the prophet, the liar, the honest". This could simply be for the rhythm of the song, but there is also a pattern to it, which leads to other meanings (intentionally or not).

We'll start with the following line/half-stanza.

    "The soldier, the civilian,
    the martyr, the victim"

All of these are common words, but there is one that I'd like to define here. A martyr is one who voluntarily suffers as the penalty for refusing to renounce their beliefs. With this in mind, let's continue. The way they are spoken, the soldier and the martyr line up, and the civilian and the victim.

Soldiers generally defend their land, people, and beliefs. By joining a military, you generally share the beliefs and causes of the group. Many soldiers are wounded and/or killed defending the aforementioned beliefs, people, and/or land. Thus, one could say they are martyrs, of a sort.

Civilian and victim are lined up, and if you follow the same pattern as the above paragraph, the civilians are the victims. In this case, a civilian could be anyone who doesn't take up arms (Whether physical weapons, or the power of their voice) to defend what they believe.

The next line like this is "The leader, the pariah, the victor, the messiah". Once again, they line up as Leader:Victor, Pariah:Messiah. A pariah is an outcast, whether by their own will or simply rejection. A messiah is any form of expected messenger or courier. Your mailman could be considered a very low form of messiah, as he doesn't deliver any sort of message of great importance like the typical Messiah.

This line could be implying that the leader is the one that will be considered the victor, and the pariah is the one who is delivering the message. For example, the one who leads the troops into the fray will be considered the hero at the end, but there could be that outcast (pariah) who is the one that delivers the actual message or cause, without notice or mention.

Next up, "The prophet, the liar, the honest". This can either be interpreted as two extremes and a median, or, for a more interesting twist, can be interpreted the same way as "The people, the good and the evil". Following the latter, it could be two types of prophets. A prophet is one who can see the future, or tell of what is to come. So, there is the Lying Prophet, and the Honest Prophet. Both know the same thing, but one will tell you something the other won't. The Lying Prophet could tell a warrior that he will win the battle, whereas the Honest Prophet will tell him that he will not win.

Apply the above to the setting of "war" that the song seems to be creating, and several things can be seen.

"The Soldier, the Civilian, the Martyr, the Victim"
The one who fights will become a martyr, and those who don't will be victims.

"The Leader, the Pariah, the Victor, the Messiah"
He who leads will be the 'victor', but he who is rejected is the one delivering the message.

"The Prophet, the Liar, the Honest"
Two men (groups) know the outcome, but one will lie to get his way, and the other will state the truth unbiased.

Onto the other lines that are seemingly important. "Brave New World" is repeated quite often in the song, so it must mean something. This implies the coming of a new age, more precisely a "brave" one. Currently, the majority of the world is afraid to stand up for their beliefs, or (more commonly) accept change. A "Brave New World" could be referring to a world where people are not afraid of things changing, and not afraid to stand up for believing in change.

    "A Brave New World"
A new age where people are not afraid of change and standing up for change.

The other portions of the first part of the song (the fast upbeat part) are not of too much importance, simply referring to dying for the cause you believe in, and never giving up.

Let's see what we can get out of the slower parts.

"I do believe in the light, raise your hands into the sky"
"The light" could be referring to the final outcome of something, generally a positive outcome. "Raise your hands into the sky" can be interpreted as a religious line, but I will keep that bias out of this. Instead, this line can be referring to how people raise theirs hands to the sky in times of celebration, as the sky has always been there and will always be used to refer to something higher/greater. "The war is won" refers to the change finally taking place, though it doesn't necessarily mean it already has outside the song (which it hasn't).

I will not interpret the last portion (The "I believe" parts), because I have not heard them in any version of the song I've heard, unfortunately. However at a later date, if I do come across that portion of the lyrics sung in the song, I will reply to this comment with those interpreted.

    Good day.

General Comment:I think its about hope. When I listen to this at the start it beats me down then builds something else up. It might be saying that soon we will be able to think for our selves, instead of our goverments and everyone else doing it for us. I love this song it is always so good to listen to.
