"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
Forever can never be long enough for me
Feel like I've had long enough with you
Forget the world now, we won't let them see
But there's one thing left to do
Now that the weight has lifted
Love has surely shifted my way
Marry me
Today and every day
Marry me
If I ever get the nerve to say hello in this cafe
Say you will
Mmhmm
Say you will
Mmhmm
Together can never be close enough for me
To feel like I am close enough to you
You wear white and I'll wear out the words "I love you"
And "you're beautiful"
Now that the wait is over
And love has finally shown her my way
Marry me
Today and every day
Marry me
If I ever get the nerve to say hello in this cafe
Say you will
Mmhmm
Say you will
Mmhmm
Promise me
You'll always be
Happy by my side
I promise to
Sing to you
When all the music dies
And marry me
Today and everyday
Marry me
If I ever get the nerve to say hello in this cafe
Say you will
Mmhmm
Say you will
Mmhmm
Marry me
Mmhmm
Feel like I've had long enough with you

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.

How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
I Proposed To My Wife At An Applebee's. I Had A Waiter Hold My Acoustic Guitar In The Back Until I Motioned For Him To Bring It To Me. After Dinner I Had Him Bring It And I Got Down On One Knee And Played The Acoustic's And Sang To Her The Song. The Entire Restaurant Fell Into Total Silence (Which Made It Extremely Awkward Even Though I Already Expected It) And When I Finished The Song My Wife Was In Complete Tears. Still Down On One Knee, I Pulled Out A Ring And Asked Her To Marry Me To Which She Instantly Said, "YES!". This Song Is Very Beautiful And Should Only Be Listened To With Your Soul Mate. It Is Truly A Romantic Experience :-)
Applebee's got some good food
@TheCamper haha lol after a big life story and thats what yoy say lol 2 thumbs up!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SO CUTE!!!! I wondered if anybody still did sweet, inventive proposals these days.
when i 1st heard this song i thought the lyrics were: "if i ever get the nerve to say i love you ms.cafe, say you will" haha ; waaayy off xD
Ha ha! :D
That would be an interesting song, LOL. :) Maybe you should write it!
heard this song for the first time in the car with the girl Im gonna marry...she just doesn't know it yet, but this song playing strengthens my huntch
hunch....-1 for grammar foul
Hey all. When I first heard this song I thought, "Aw, that's sweet. It's a proposal song." And then I listened in and disected the lyrics.
If you look at the music video, the begining shows a bunch of couples telling the story of how they met. Ha, one Youtuber even put down that they thought it was an ad for eHarmony before the actual video.
Although the music videos can't always be trusted for song meanings, I really think that this one was hinting something, particularly love at first sight. Not just infatuation, but love. That moment when you look at someone and think "I want them with me, always and forever. I will never hurt them, I will protect them and I will love them... now let's see, how do I introduce myself?"

How did I do? Are the lyrics correct?
Yes, as far as I can tell. Thank you
Hey man, I'm pretty sure it's "now that the weight has lifted". It does sound like he's saying "not" but it's only because of him pronouncing "that" right after. Other than that, great job.
Second line should say: To feel
4th line: But there's

Second to last paragraph: I'll promise to sing
great song. beautiful lyrics, i love the line "you'll wear white and i'll wear out the words i love yo and your beautiful"
Those are my favorite lyrics in the song =]
it really captures that insatiable passion that you get when you're in love with someone. the way you can never get close enough and that no amount of time will really ever give you enough of that person. His yearning voice at the chorus really makes this song come alive.
probably my favorite train song. i think this is the song that my fiance and i are going to use for our first dance. is it just me or is train getting very very very romantic in this album?
The first time I listened to it I didn't listen to closely. Then I had it on as background noise, and I heard the line "If I ever get the nerve to say hello in this cafe" and it caught me off guard. Its like an infatuation with someone before you even really know them, and you are already dreaming of a life with them.
this line caught my attention too. definitely about an infatuation :)
Same here =]
I came to that conclusion at first too. However, after sitting thinking about that line for a while I came to a second conclusion. Think about movie scenes when a man is about to propose to his girlfriend. Even if the guy knows the answer is going to be a 'yes' it is still incredibly nerve-racking. Therefore, I think this is him trying to build up the courage on the day of the proposal. If he can just get the nerve to go over there and say 'hello' then he can ask her to marry him.
straight up beautiful. This song will have all the girls goin' crazy.
dealarissa - yeah i totally agree with you, Train has some real romance underlying on this album, it's great, haven't heard an album like this in a while - pretty much everysong is fantyatsic, original & refreshing cheers
