I found a fox in the woods
she was cold and hungry
I gave her all that I could
I was sure that she loved me
and we were thick as thieves

through the winter I kept her warm
fed her all she desired
then she told me in so many words
I was the one who saved her life
and she would never forget
and I would never be left

but then one day I ran out of bread
and wood to keep the fire
and when I woke, I found she had fled
to the house down the river
and I cried all night
because I had thought she was snide

General Comment:i believe the last line is 'because i had thought she was mine.'

this is a great great song.
for me, i think it's referring to someone that you truly love, whether it's romantically or not. sometimes you'll do literally anything possible to make them happy, and they'll appreciate it, but once you've given them everything, they'll move on to the next person.
it's happened to me before and it does hurt, because i honestly believed that the things they said were true; that they would never leave, and that they loved me.
