Do you ever play with kids in the basement
Soot upon your face so you were a hot mess
All your little molars cracked in the pressure
Come here little sister, let's get you to bed

But oh you caught me sleeping in the power sockets
You caught me mildew in the tiles of the bathroom
And oh you shot a glance like I was doing okay
Oh I am never on my way

Do you ever run with him in the morning
Think about jumping over the back fence
Seven different places need a bitter mending
All we use are eyes to fill in most the gaps

But oh you caught me sleeping in the power sockets
You caught me mildew in the tiles of the bathroom
And oh you shot a glance like I was doing okay
Oh I am never on my way

The reasons my molars are so broken
Is I spend too much time ghosting
With the likes of you and yours

The reasons my insides are swollen
Is I spend too much time ghosting
With the likes of you and yours

General Comment:I always assumed this was a song about drug addiction. The lyrics to me suggest a codependent relationship between two people possibly smoking meth. Their house is falling apart, they're reassuring each other that they're "doing okay," but their health is deteriorating and they're not going anywhere. The reason they're so sick is that they spend too much time with their group of user friends, 'ghosting' hits of whatever their drug of choice is.

General Comment:i agree that it's about a less than happy childhood, but i don't think the mother was so much neglectful as it was that she just had too high expectations.

'all your little molars cracked in the pressure' is like grinding your teeth, something people do when they are stressed. 'come here little sister, let's get you to bed' like he has to be the responsible one, or maybe he's trying to remove her from a situation where the mother is just berating them.

then 'but oh you caught me sleeping in the power sockets/you caught me mildew in the tiles of the bathroom/and oh you shot a glance like I was doing okay/oh I am never on my way' this whole verse is like he's saying that she only sees what he does wrong, and he's never moving forward in her eyes.

'do you ever run with him in the morning/think about jumping over the back fence' seems like (and i'm not sure who he is addressing, perhaps his sister with 'him' being a boyfriend or something) he's asking if they ever want to run away from it all, kind of like, 'do you ever feel like that because i do'

'seven different places need a bitter mending/all we use are eyes to fill in most the gaps' i'm not really sure about this one, but maybe he's referring to the seven days of the week? how his mother never let up and so he's saying she thinks they need a bitter ending, but now he's looking back and knows that things need to be sewn up so 'mendings'. that seems kind of chaotic, haha, but that's just what i'm thinking.

'the reasons my molars are so broken is i spend too much time ghosting with the likes of you and yours/the reasons my insides are swollen is i spend too much time ghosting with the likes of you and yours' sounds like he he's saying that he still feels like his mother made him feel because he lingers in the past, hence 'ghosting'. so he's still stressed and feels inadequate because he still allows his childhood to haunt him.

General Comment:this is my favorite song by them, and that says something because they're all so lovely. this one starts off so beautifully though, and progress so sound so bitterly nostalgic.

My Interpretation:When I hear the line...
"The Reason My Inside's Are so Swollen Is I Spend To Much Time Ghostin' With The Like's of You And Yours."

To me it means the reason my head (Inside's) is so stuffy and cloudy (or swollen) is I spend to much time (using the smoking definition of ghosting-@ the bottom) filling my head with thoughts of a certain person and what they like, and what they do, and what they think that it gets to the point that I can't get them out of my system.

Ghosting:When to take a hit and hold it into your lungs so long that when you finally exhale nothing come out.
    (DEFINITION CAME FROM LOVERSDREAMERSANDME)

jus mi own personal opinion, i don't think thats what the song actually means. but for me that line and mi interpretation of it is so true.

General Comment:i completely agree with 'loversdreamersandme' i think he intended it to have two interpretations in which one is a neglected childhood feeling of nostalgia and the other a smoking technique.

    General Comment:From a recent interview:

"But, yes, the record is also about this pre-adolescent love story between a young boy and this ghost that occupies his house. ‘Ghosting’, for instance, is about him observing what she does around the house and he is sort of thinking that some day when he passes on he will have to take responsibility for her, so he’s kind of trying to emulate her."

My Interpretation:From what I interpret from the song, it's about someones childhood and not particularly a happy one. I sense a bit of resentment towards the speakers mother. I feel that the mother must not have payed a lot of attention to her children. Sure she would scold them when she took the time to notice them doing something bad, like playing in the power sockets, but she never got down on her knees to play with her children allowing to get some "soot" on her face or put her children to bed.

Instead, the speaker wonders if she was fantasizing about jumping over the back fence if she runs with "him" in the morning, "him" being someone other then the speakers biological father. I assume the running would be away from her current life and family.

    The last two verses:

"The reasons my molars are so broken
Is I spend too much time ghosting
With the likes of you and yours

The reasons my insides are swollen
Is I spend too much time ghosting
With the likes of you and yours"

I feel that they can be interpreted in two different ways. Ghosting is a smoking term in which you take a hit and hold it into your lungs for so long that when you finally exhale nothing comes out, you ghosted it. This, to me, makes sense in the aspects of how he is saying his molars are broken and his insides are swollen. On the other hand, the term ghost could be a representation of the neglect he feels from his mother.

    Maybe?
