I've got grounds for divorce.
it's in my blood this divorce.
I separate everybody, I need
distance from your body.
Oh I deserve this anguish on my house.

So get away, you cannot follow me.
I get away, you cannot follow me.
So get away, you cannot follow me.
So get away, you cannot follow me. I get away.

I've got grounds for recourse.
Your lungs fill with discourse.
You separate from my body, you need
consistence from somebody.
Oh I deserve this anguish on my house.

So get away, you cannot follow me.
I get away, you cannot follow me.
So get away, you cannot follow me.
I get away, you cannot follow me.
So get away, you cannot follow me.
I get away, you cannot follow me.
So get away.

General Comment:also, the "I deserve this anguish on my house" reminds me of Romeo and Juliet, the "plague on both your houses!" thing.

General Comment:she's screwing herself over in her relationships because she can't stand closeness and intimacy.

My Opinion:i read in an interview that it's about her parents' divorce but i really think that she's written this also about her separation with Emy - It's in my blood this divorce

i watched a vlog where liz feldman interviewed the twins and Sara believes she can't stay in a relationship for a very long time it's like the relationship expires in more or less 5 years. So i think these lines are for Emy
    - You need consistence from somebody
Oh, I deserve this anguish on my house
    ...
    So get away
    you cannot follow me
    (I get away)
    You cannot follow me

    My Interpretation:I LOVE this song!

I think it's not necessarily about her divorce from a partner or about her parent's divorce (ie the song is in their opinion).

For me, this song is about someone who has commitment issues.
(I've got grounds for divorce, It's in my blood, this divorce) Is about how she feels like she can't help causing break ups in relationships because she has commitment issues, she needs time to herself and because her parents divorced when she was young. The singer can't help needing distance from people, it's just part of who she is.

(I'll separate everybody, I need distance from your body) She is saying that she has to get away from people, not just lovers, but everyone, she needs time away from everyone to be with herself

(Oh, I deserve this anguish on my house) This line is saying that her partner is angry with her for always needing distance and the singer is annoyed with herself for needing to keep away from people and thinks that her partner deserves to be annoyed with her

(So get away, you cannot follow me) Obvious really, she just has to get away from others and from her partner and there's nothing anyone can do about it, no matter how much the singer loves someone, she needs to get away

(I've got grounds for recourse) She's saying there is a chance that she can fix this aspect of her personality because
(Your lungs fill with discourse) her partner is feeling divided between staying with her or just getting out of the relationship, and she doesn't want her partner to leave.

(You separate from my body, You need consistence from somebody) Her partner is drifting away from her because the singer is too distant from her whereas her partner needs someone who is consistent and this is why the singer wants to change, again because she doesn't want her partner to leave

(Oh, I deserve this anguish on my house) Her partner is hurt by the singer and is giving her grief for being so distant and the singer thinks she deserves this anguish because it is her who is hurting her partner, it is her who is breaking up their relationship.

So yeah, I think it's about someone who needs distance from people, no matter how much they love them and this quality is breaking up a relationship and hurting their partner, who is slowly moving away and debating whether or not to stay

My Interpretation:It's definitely about her parents' divorce, but the only line that confuses that for me, is when she says "It's in my blood, this divorce." I understand that to mean someone in her family has been divorced before, which is why I think most people assume it's about her and Emy. I however, am going with the article I read that says it's written from the perspective of her parents. I think the first verse is the mom:

    I separate everybody,
I need distance from your body.
Oh I deserve this anguish on my house.

I think she's saying that as the one who is initiating the divorce, she feels horrible about herself for splitting up her family, but she can't help it, she needs the distance from her husband. She has to get away, and he cannot go with her.

    Then the husband speaks:

    I've got grounds for recourse,
Your lungs fill with discourse (probably one of my favorite lines ever)
    You separate from my body,
    You need consistence from somebody.

He feels like the things she says about him aren't true, his recourse, or 'appeal' is met with her discourse on how it just won't work between them. (Seriously, her lungs fill with discourse? That's a genius line!) So she tells him she needs someone more consistent, and he has to just accept it, and he does, and he feels bad about himself ("Oh I deserve this anguish on my house.")

I really really like this song. It really shows how in the divorce both parties can really blame themselves and how confusing it can be for everyone involved. I think it's just a great song.

General Comment:I think this song is about commitment issues. and how she wont let anyone get close to her because she doesn't want to end up like her divorced parents.

General Comment:i've made an obvious mistake in my own typing: "i’ve got grounds for RECOURSE. your lungs fill with discourse..."

it's not about sara and emy. as stated above, i read that sara wrote it about her parents-- this song as well as "light up".

General Comment:after viewing some of the new album lyrics, it's strange to see how few people buy cds anymore these days... as the lyrics are right in the booklet.

i bought the cd. i wouldn't even allow myself to listen to it before the actual release date. i think the wait makes whatever's be waited for more appreciated. if you want to know this truth, though... i prefer when a cd doesn't come with the lyrics. i haven't even looked at them. i like to interpret them myself. there's more to discover that way. anyway, here's what i hear:

    i’ve got grounds for divorce
it’s in my blood this divorce
    i separate everybody
i need distance from your body
oh, i deserve this anguish on my house

so get away, you cannot follow me
i get away, you cannot follow me
so get away, you cannot follow me
so get away, you cannot follow me
    i get away

    i’ve got grounds for divorce
    your lungs fill with discourse
    you separate from my body
    you need consistence from somebody
oh, i deserve this anguish on my house

so get away, you cannot follow me
i get away, you cannot follow me
so get away, you cannot follow me
i get away, you cannot follow me
so get away, you cannot follow me
i get away, you cannot follow me
    so get away
