In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

beautiful. i haven't seen many bands live where i fall in love with them without ever hearing them before. but he is one of them. he has such an amazing energy when you watch him live. gritty, soulful neo-hippie-blues might define it slightly.
I can't figure if the third verse is a response the the first two, or if it is the same voice after heartbreak?
I think it's about unrequited love. The "lover" is saying the first two verses, and then the one who isn't really feeling it, says the last verse in response to the "lover"
I can relate this song to my personal experience.
I think it is about a boy who has loved a girl for a very long time. Maybe they grew up together, but now they live far away from each other and talk to each other about their new lives. It's "so much sweeter on the other end of that receiver" because it seems like the girl has moved on, but the boy still misses her. In the second voice he tells her that she should have her fun where she is, because no matter what he will always love her. This is why he repeats "I'm already yours".
I think the third verse is about letting go of an old love. The boy knows that no matter what, a little part of the girl will always love him, but it is better for both of them the let it go. He has been there for her for too long without anything happening between them, and finally realizes that he was never hers to begin with, thus "I was never yours."
