The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"

I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

"Husker Du" means "do you remember" in Danish, so this makes sense.
The line is "Do you remember 'Makes No Sense At All'", which is a Husker Du song. Though I agree that the "Do you remember" is a pun on the translation.

The official track listing for the new album doesn't have a song with this title on it, even though "Heaven is Whenever" is the name of the album. There is a song called "We Can Get Together" on the track listing, so I'm guessing that's the real title of this song.
soooo... i've never heard of any drug called heaven, but i have heard of Heavenly, who were indeed from Oxford. they released a whole bunch of singles though, so i don't know which one Craig's referring to here. Heaven Hill make whiskey, but i don't know why a girl from there would be talking about Husker Du, who did start in St. Paul MN but never really got particularly huge. songs called "Heaven" and containing the phrase "heaven is the whole of the heart" have been recorded by Face to Face and the Psychedlic Furs, but I don't know who covered who. "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" was by Meat Loaf and Ellen Foley and is also referred to in "Certain Songs". i'd never heard of it before, but Utopia did release a song called "Love is the Answer" in 1977. i'd agree that they were probably right.

Heavenly's the band whose drummer (Matt Fletcher) was the singer (Amelia Fletcher)'s little brother. What Craig's probably referring to is that Matt killed himself. Apparently it happened after he started on antidepressants before warnings came out that they increased risk of suicide. Heavenly broke up after Matt's suicide, and then reformed later under another name.<br /> <br /> The single is probably "Our love is heavenly" which is pretty much exactly how it sounds. Later in Heavenly's career, they got a lot more cynical about love. If the single's "PUNK girl" that also might make sense, since it's about a simple infatuation on an EP which is otherwise incredibly sad and primarily is about rape.<br /> <br /> This song is so fantastic.

Heavenly were a major part of the twee pop movement in the UK in the 90s. Part of the Sarah Records (later Shinkansen records) stable. After 4 great Heavenly albums and Matt's death they formed Marine Research and then Tender Trap. Prior to Heavenly they were all in Tallulah Gosh. Heavenly were a great little band and were excellent live.<br /> <br /> I read an interview with the lead singer of THS and he said the only Heavenly record he owns was Space Manatee. So he's obviously talking about that one.

Oh come on people! "The Girl Who Lives on Heaven Hill" is a Husker Du song off of New Day Rising. "I come up to her cabin still" is a line from the song. "Makes No Sense at All" is a Husker Du song off of Flip Your Wig. Incidentally, Husker Du is Norwegian for "Do you remember."
This is a simple but great song about sitting around spinning vinyl and rocking out and talking about the music with friends. It's sung from the point of view of someone looking back later in life and realizing how that was heaven and things are not so simple now.

The relevance of Husker Du getting huge has to do with The Hold Steady also being from Minneapolis/St. Paul. It's an encouragement that that Craig's band could be as big as Husker Du, who were critically praised and sold a ton of records for being on an indie.
