Lyrics for Hearing Damage as interpreted by skttrbrain

Hearing Damage Lyrics
A tear in the membrane
Allows the voices in
They wanna push you off the path
With little frequency wiring

But you can do no wrong
In my eyes

A drunken salesman
You're hearing damage
Your mind is restless
They say you're getting better
But you don't feel any better

You speakers are blowing
Your ears are wrecking
You're hearing damage
You wish you felt better
You wish you felt better

But at least
You can do no wrong
In my eyes

I think the first line actually sounds like
"Tear in my brain"
which makes more sense I think.

Great song.
The phrase "A drunken salesman" is unclear to me yet stood out. Wonder if that means that a drunken salesman might say too much or not be as smooth or as convincing to sell you on something or an idea? They might misread social cues that you are uninterested in their sales pitch? IDK...thoughts?

I think my favorite lines are when Thom sings "They say you're getting better....But you don't feel any better" So true. People sometimes, for lack of what to say to a very ill person, will tell you that you look or seem better...but you may be or at least feel the opposite.

I love this song despite Twilight&Co.
But I'm italian and Thom's pronununciation is such a mistery :|
To not talk about the meaning!
I've found a lot of translation... I've also tried to do one in my way (usually the english lyrics translated in my language are a crime against humanity...)
For example: the song is called Hearing Damage. I think is like, i don't know, a detriment to the auditory apparatus used metaphorically. But during the text, i'm quite shure Thom says "you ARE hearing damage"...
._. So... "damage" becomes direct object of "to hear" and... well... For me is a big problem (maybe not for you, I understand my limits).
Well, I love english language in general, but sometimes it drives me mad : the syntax is more, more "liquid" than italian one, a word written in a certain way can be a verb, a adjective, a noun (at least it's,actually, the reason for me to like english so much... paradox :D)

Ps: sorry for the mistakes... be compassionate.

"You can do no wrong... in my eyes"

That's the best lyric of 2009.

The lyrics remind me of holosonic technology. Here's an excerpt from an article:

"What has long been rumored within the conspiracy and ufology communities went public a few years ago (though a variant of the technology was discussed for use even earlier during the Waco siege) and is quickly infiltrating the market of ideas and real world applications. Holosonic sound technologies project a high pitched directional beam of ultrasound audio to an exact location, usually where the target audience’s head will be. The victim will hear a voice, music, advertisement, or whatever the beams controller would like, inside their head. No-one around them would be able to hear it, unless they could drag someone to that exact spot and hope the beam was still trained on the same location."

I think Thom had this in mind when he wrote the lyrics.

Ugh. This song is hijacking my life.
I haven't really thought hard about the words; all I have is my gut reaction to listening to it about a million times in the last 3 days...
But the sense I get is that it is about understanding and being understood in turn. This isn't the most intellectual comment I have ever made but I offer it for your entertainment.

I think the song is about a schizophrenic. One of the main criteria to be diagnosed with schizophrenia is to hallucinate in some way, which can be hearing voices. This is described in the first verse "A tear in the membrane (brain) allows the voices in; they wanna push you off the path with little frequency wiring." Schizophrenics will sometimes believe that their thoughts are being implanted in their brain by radios, which is what the frequency wiring may refer to.

"Hearing damage" describes the voices. Voices tell schizophrenics various things, such as you're worthless, hurt yourself, you won't amount to anything, etc which is the "damage" that is heard. The drunken salesmen is the schizophrenic.

Then the speaker proclaims to him... "You wish you felt better. But at least you can do no wrong in my eyes."

In the context of the movie, it looks to match Bella's nightmares and desire to get in dangerous situations.

Best song on the album by far.

It's so strange, New Moon is such a mediocre movie (better than that crap first movie, though), yet the soundtrack is so phenomenal. Of course the song by Thom Yorke is the highlight of the album, hands down; I wouldn't expect anything less to him. This song is so beautiful. Every time I listen to it, I go into a trance, like the song has completely devoured my thoughts.

WOW. i don't think words could ever describe how i feel when i listen to this song. it's been on repeat for countless of hours. i feel like i'm in such a mystical and magical state of mind each time i turn it on. it sort of makes me feel sad, such dark feelings, and yet i feel a positive way about it. strange, yes, i can't seem to get a grip of it at all.

when it comes to the meaning, i don't understand a whole lot of it. my favorite parts are "they say you're getting better, but you don't feel any better" and "you can do no wrong.. in my eyes" last is such a short sentence, yet it's full of emotions. yeah, i can only say wow.

the song hits close to home, and i have no idea why! bugs me :P but i love it.

"you wish you felt better,
But at least you can do no wrong in my eyes."

it's like he understands what this person is going through, but doesn't care... as long as he gets emotional stimulation from this person. Throughout this song Thom is disassociating the way the person feels from how he feels. Like, well, you feel like shit and you are in pain but whatever.

This song makes me fly! When I walk along the streets listening to this great song I feel like flowing through the crowds of people being very far of them, a bit isolated and in pain but on the other hand also strangly happy. It gives me some kind of consolation..

This song reminds me of the guy i'm in love with, but not in the typical "love song" way...it's like i try to convince him how great he is, but all he is interested in is what's not right in his life...it's like he wishes he felt better but in my eyes, he can do no wrong...it sounds cheesy, but that's how i interpret this song.

Wow, I really like the schizophrenic interpretation, and how he doesn't appear to care about the mental illness... I really had no idea what the song meant, only that I've been completely addicted to it for the last couple of months!

I agree with asclepius that the subject of this song is suffering from schizophrenia and is hearing voices. A metaphorical "tear in the membrane" allows those voices into the brain. The "little frequency wiring" may be a reference to Electroshock Therapy, a common treatment for schizophrenia. This treatment is being used to push her "off the path" to self destruction or suicide.

She may be trying to overpower the voices in hear head with too loud music "your speakers are blowing" resulting in hearing damage. The doctors administering the treatment may be perceived as "drunken salesmen" trying to convince her that the treatment is working and she is getting better.

I am reminded of "Black Balloon" by the Goo Goo Dolls.

Urgh, I hate how everybody compares this song to Twilight/New Moon every time. It goes way beyond that silly movie. It's like how they put in "Supermassive Black Hole" by Muse and now everybody all of a sudden loves Muse. >.> Thank goodness I liked them beforehand.

Amazing song. Amazing artist. Love much. <3

Well for me, this song hass a huge meaning. When I first heard this song it put me in a trance where I just wanted to be angry and happy and sad all at the same time. But just a few weeks ago, I really listened to the lyrics. I have been dealing with an eating disorder for about a year, and somehow this song corresponded with that, Here is my interpertation:
A tear in the membrane
-something is wrong with my brain. a glitch.
Allows the voices in
=ana (anorexia) comes in telling me to gain self control and not eat.
They wanna push you off the path
-she tells me that when my family and friends try to help me, they are only pushing me off the path to being perfect, and having complete control.
With little frequency wiring
-she tells me they are schemeing doing any dumb thing to tear us apart.
But you can do no wrong
-but she says i can do no wrong, as long as i come crawling back to her.
In my eyes
-in her eyes only of course.
A drunken salesman
-the doctors who think they can fix me do everything in there power to tear me and ana apart.
You're hearing damage
- i'm hearing damage from everyone who tries to tear me and ana apart
Your mind is restless
-i can't focus on anything but what ana tells me to, therefore i get restless.
They say you're getting better
-doctors say that treatment and therapy will fix me.
But you don't feel any better
-i don't feel better, only ana makes me feel better.
You speakers are blowing
-ana's voice blasts in my ears telling me not to eat, and to count my every calorie.
Your ears are wrecking
-i wish she would just go away.
You're hearing damage
-both ana and my family and friends confuse me, i don't know which side to pick. i'm hearing damage.
You wish you felt better
-i wsih the pain was over, for me and everyone around me.
You wish you felt better
-but it never goes away, it never ends.
But at least
-something is right.
You can do no wrong
-i still can do no wrong in her eyes.
In my eyes
-she teels me.
Thanks for listening. I have gotten a bit better. I worte this a while back and finally got up the nerve to publish. Thanks again!!

I think this song doesn’t deeply conceal its meaning, but you know anything can be interpreted in its own way. For me I know Thom Yorke has suffered allot of difficult hearing problems from years of playing. I think the drunken and restless salesman is a metaphor for the anxiety that comes along with hearing problems. I think they say you’re getting better is another symbol for the audience praising him, and not feeling better about the musician being caught up between giving a good show and its effect on them.

i can kinda see this song relating to the loss of emotion and going through depression when something precious is taken from you. its like going insane and loosing your mind when all your thoughts are jumbled and mixed. its like an emotionaly death, or emotional suicide
