Oh, some evil spirit, oh, some evil this way comes
They told me how they fear it
Now they're placing it on their tongues
For to see it with my own eyes
For to see it with my own eyes
No food or water for the better part of ten months

Quietly he sat between the folds of a tree trunk
For to see it with my own eyes
For to see it with my own eyes
All the men of faith and men of science had their questions
Could it ever be on earth as it is in heaven?
For to see it with my own eyes For to see it with my own eyes

My Interpretation:This is one of my favorite songs and I think it is about taking acid. "They told me how they fear it" sounds like getting advice on how to avoid a bad trip. "Now they're placing it on their tongues" def seems like someone doing acid, literally putting it on their tongue. "For to see it with my own eyes" this line relates to the experience on acid because you see things that you never have before such as vivid imagery and bright colors.
"All the men of faith and men of science had their questions
Could it ever be on earth as it is in heaven?" -- When tripping it feels like you have all the answers and you feel like you have a deeper understanding of life.

Song Meaning:In my opinion maybe it's about a person (guy) being haunted by his inner most fears, the evil spirit. His mind tricks him into seeing this fear everywhere and he slowly degrades because his mind is accepting it as reality.(They reference Buddha Boy) maybe saying how this person is attempting to come to terms and overcome his fear or is so overtaken by it that he's starving himself metaphorically or literally, and the "All the men of faith and men of science had their questions
Could it ever be on earth as it is in heaven?" part could be him going and questioning people of religion and intellect on how to deal with his situation and eventually overcome this. That is how I view this song.

General Comment:This song is definitely talking about the infamous "Buddha Boy" from Nepal. PBS did a documentary about him. He supposedly sat in the folds of a tree trunk for over ten months with no food or water, not moving or spending any energy on even talking, and getting all his energy from the tree and the vitamin E of the sun. He mysteriously vanished 2 months after PBS shot the documentary, and even though people were guarding the spot day in and day out, no one saw him leave, and there is no trace of him, and no has seen him since. during the filming, the guys in PBS just barely miss this moment where the kid supposedly almost wen on fire, apparently from internal combustion, but this wasn't proved. Still, it begs the question: If there's no trace of him leaving and no one has seen him since, is it possible he could've just went into another dimension, or he ascended. Either way, the boy was amazing. It's a true story. You can look it up on youtube or google. I suggest everyone do it. It's very very enlightening, and may change the way you live. Also, since I have your attention, I've been asking anyone with a digital camera with a flash to take pictures in dark areas and try and summon "orbs". Ask them to come out, and glow for you. If you see one, say "good job" and encourage it burn brighter. Keep doing it more and more. I was so shocked what I found. I am a firm believer in these spirits now. Just do it people! It's gonna change our lives once we spread this knowledge!

My Opinion:This song is definitely describing taking psychedelics.

The first few lines reflect how I feel before I trip.

We're told how drugs are evil, how they can kill you, etc. when we're younger in an attempt to thwart us from using them. I feel guilty every time I do drugs simply due to being programmed to think that way when I was a child from parents, anti-drug programs, teachers, etc.

During a trip (luckily I haven't had any bad ones) it feels like heaven.

    Just my thoughts.

General Comment:HAHN: I wrote the lyrics after seeing this TV special about a boy in Nepal who allegedly meditated in the jungle for 10 months straight, without eating or drinking or even moving. I already had the chorus line, “Oh to see it with my own eyes,” but the verses came about after watching these thousands of people swarming to witness and study this seemingly miraculous event. It got me thinking about our collective fascination with extraordinary events, both good and bad.

The line “Oh some evil spirit, oh some evil this way comes/They told me how they fear it, now they’re placing it on their tongues” is about phenomena like disaster tourism or rubberneckers on the freeway. It’s interesting to me that we have such a desire to witness out-of-the-ordinary things for ourselves.

We were still all living together in LA when I wrote the song. I remember showing the guys an early demo of it right before we went to the UK for the first time in July of 2009. We jammed on it a few times during that trip and by the time we got home in August we’d decided to hunker down and finish it. Even though our record label already had what they thought was our completed album in their possession, we wanted this new song to make the album. So at the last minute, we went into the studio and recorded it.

My Interpretation:To me, it sounds like they're talking about LSD/Acid. And maybe they're telling him how it's amazing, yet dangerous. You do place LSD/Acid on your tongue. And maybe after that part, they're describing the high? maybe i'm just a crazy drugy

General Comment:i feel like he is describing someones first acid trip
"oh some evil spirit oh some evil this way comes"
may be a reference to himself as the one who influenced the person to try it in the first place..
"they told me how they fear it now their placing it on their tongues"
and he is witnessing them try it for the first time despite their fear
"oh to see it with my own eyes"
repeated througout the song .. this is a thought most would think while experiencing acid. there are just no words for some of the things you see, feel, hear, think.
another characteristic of an acid trip is the lack of feeling hungry and wanting to eat food.
and when he describes the man sitting at the fold of the tree trunk after not eating or drinking i think of the Buddha meditating near the nile for months.. he may be trying to express the state of pure peace and meditation he is in while tripping and seeing the earth as a beautiful place
he may feel like earth is heaven while on acid :)
    this song is amazing !
