So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
What you gonna do when your love is gone?
Who you gonna play when the game has ended?
Where you gonna go when the bird has flown?
How you gonna play when you're all alone?
Keep the fighting spirit of love
Keep the fighting spirit of love
What you gonna do when you're on your own?
What you gonna have when you got no place to call your own?
What you gonna try when your cover is blown?
How you gonna fly when your wings are broken?
Keep the fighting spirit of love
Keep the fighting spirit of love
Keep the fighting spirit of love
Don't let it get you down
Keep the fighting spirit
And turn your head around
Don't let it take you in
Keep the fighting spirit
And you'll begin again
Keep the fighting spirit of love
Keep the fighting spirit of love
Keep the fighting spirit of love
Keep the fighting spirit of love
Who you gonna play when the game has ended?
Where you gonna go when the bird has flown?
How you gonna play when you're all alone?
Keep the fighting spirit of love
Keep the fighting spirit of love
What you gonna do when you're on your own?
What you gonna have when you got no place to call your own?
What you gonna try when your cover is blown?
How you gonna fly when your wings are broken?
Keep the fighting spirit of love
Keep the fighting spirit of love
Keep the fighting spirit of love
Don't let it get you down
Keep the fighting spirit
And turn your head around
Don't let it take you in
Keep the fighting spirit
And you'll begin again
Keep the fighting spirit of love
Keep the fighting spirit of love
Keep the fighting spirit of love
Keep the fighting spirit of love

Again, Madonna is at her best when she writes, sings and cries to her audience-Fighting Spirit is no exception to the brilliant Ciccone Kabbalah golden rule. Her writing is self-explanatory. In Fighting Spirit, she sings-no, make that-cries with a beautiful Madonna/Evita/Wallis smile. Her Detroit voice is clear, bright and strong and the outcome/message of Fighting Spirit is this-we might as well sing it to Lady Madonna herself-Never Give Up Because Dreams Come True. Madonna has been a Ray of Light and has Caused a Loud Commotion for 30 years-may the lady reign forever! To Madonna-Keep the Fighting Spirit of Love!-I'll Be Your Friend Forever Rebel Dancer Madge! Rock On Lady Ciccone! I Love You, Brilliant Madonna- the Lady of Them All!
