So young, so brazen, so unholy
I come to you in painted skies
Your broken saint, your ancient story
The living challenge to their lies

Trapped in the cold outside
There ain't no shelter
And they want to force my hand

Until I take what I want
And then break all the lies
That they feed, the fucking liars
Smash all the temples
And crawl through the rubble
And cry to the fallen

I'm the last of my kind still standing
I'm alone

A wolf alone upon the hillside
I live on what they throw away
I go to sleep behind the 8-ball
I live to fight for one more day

I'm trapped in the cold outside
There ain't there no shelter
And they want to force my hand

Until I take what I want
And then break all the lies
That they feed, the fucking liars
Smash all the temples
And crawl through the rubble
And cry to the fallen

I'm the last of my kind still standing
I'm alone

(The last of my kind still standing)

Song Meaning:I think this is a holocost reference "I'm the last of my kind still standing on the wall" (surviving a firing sqaud) "Your broken saint, your ancient story. The living challenge to their lies." (hitler's view was religious, and the nazi's sometimes questioned him)

General Comment:It seems to be about the elders and the temples of love.
He's the last man standing while some fell into heaven and some into hell.
He's alone because he's not one of 'them' nor is he really living but he's not in the matrix of the unconscious.
He has no one to shelter him from himself or the world so he goes back to sleep and fights through another day.
But the time has come where he's been called on to take what he relly wanted (i think this is probably to be enjoying his life with the living) but then to deliver his message and to destroy the temples of love (dogma/blind faith/guilt/coverteousness etc) and the little white lies. He doesnt really want to because he understands the consequences however he isnt jesus, he's just another man nailed to the cross so he will be forced to because he has no choice.
Good song...about shame and pride...in my 'umble opinion.

General Comment:If they ever have the balls to make another "Highlander" movie this should be the title track. Couldn't you picture Connor MacLeod in the final fight scene chopping off the last immortal's head off while yelling, "There can be only one!" with this song in the background? Totally kick ass.

I saw the new AIC with Will. They opened with "Them Bones!" You couldn't pick a better opener if you tried. This band can still rock your face and kick your ass. Don't be fooled by their age or new frontman.

My Interpretation:I really like when you can drag multiple meaning out of one song. I really like several of the others interpretation.

I like thinking of fictitious meanings as well as realistic views so here is what I got...

My fictitious view was that it could be kind of like a science fiction story were an organization is trying to brain wash a group of people (or everyone) and create some sort of super soldier. Turns out the brain washing doesn't work on this individual and they fight back being the last free mind. (like a Wolverine story)

My realistic view was that he is the last to fight for their freedom from the government, press, and everything that has some form of control over there life.
I also thought it might be a shot that Alice in Chains is one of the last bands to carry on that true grunge sound without changing like STP... (but now Soundgarden is back too!!! YEAH!)

When I heard "Smash all the temples" I immediately thought of someone smashing through peoples skulls.
witch added to my fictitious meaning.
Seeing that others take it as a religious temple definitely adds more possibilities that did not even think of.

General Comment:Agree, probably about being rejected by the church and feeling like an outcast.

General Comment:i think this song is a sting at religion for how the church ostracizes anyone who isn't amongst their ranks, while ignoring that we are poor, starving, and in pain, yet preaching that giving a helping hand to people in those circumstances is the right thing to do...i guess they leave that up to Jesus eh?

General Comment:Does the chorus remind anyone else of Rob Zombies "Dragula"?

    Either way, great song.

General Comment:The lyrics remind me of a poem I studied back in high school about apartheid in South Africa where the blacks were segregated from and were forced to be subservient to the ruling whites. The blacks would get the second best of everything with the whites being seen as the supreme race and there were definitely cases where the marginalisation would push some blacks into revolting - and of course that would only result in those people being detained, imprisoned etc. and further cement the demonisation and marginalisation of their race in that society (the "and they want to force my hand until I..." parts).

That can obviously be generalised though into something more relevent to most of us, like the 1993 WTC bombings for instance - the American influence, presence and involvement in the Arab world provoked a terrorist attack or the way people in the ghetto are forced to steal and deal stuff like crack for a living because of government failure to support those in relative poverty.

I see it personally as the way that society outcasts certain people and the subsequent alienation driving those people to revolt in ways that only lead to cementing society's outcasting of them

General Comment:All of your perceptions of this song may or may not be an accurate meaning but to me all i can picture is Layne in his last agonizing days dealing with his addiction. "Live on what they throw away, go to sleep behind the 8 ball, i live to fight one more day." "No shelter" he knew what was inevitable and coming but kept goin. That's cool Duvall wrote it, surprised me when i saw that. Saw AIC 2 weeks ago in KC and have to admit after being very very skeptical without Layne, Duvall and Cantrell put up a steller perfermance. It was great to see Grude back

General Comment:This song reminds me of the most recent Queensrysche cd about the Soldiers in Iraq (or in general). I draw allot of parallels to what a soldier goes through emotionally and what Duvall is singing about in this song.

"So young, so brazen, so unholy
I come to you in painted skies
Your broken saint, your ancient story
The living challenge to their lies"

This first section is to me an introduction to a young soldier first setting foot in enemy territory.

    "Trapped in the cold outside
    There ain't no shelter
And they want to force my hand"

A soldier must always face adverse situations...

"Until I take what I want
And then break all the lies
That they feed, the fucking liars
    Smash all the temples
    And crawl through the rubble
    And cry to the fallen"

The soldier carries out his duties...sometimes having to destroy another country down and then face the locals and express concern/care for their plight.

"I'm the last of my kind still standing
    I'm alone"

Feelings of soldiering on...showing strength yet feeling alone/lost.

"A wolf alone upon the hillside
I live on what they throw away
I go to sleep behind the 8-ball
I live to fight for one more day"

Pretty obvious when going on with my understanding of the song.

(The last of my kind still standing)
