This song is about the events that occur after Winston is set free from the ministry of love (A sci-fi novel "1984" by Goerge Orwell)....
When these pillars get pulled down
It will be you who wears the crown
And I'll owe everything to you
How much pain has cracked your soul?
How much love would make you whole?
You're my guiding lightning strike
I can't find the words to say, they're overdue
I'd travel half the world to say "I belong to you"
And she attacks me like a Leo
When my heart is split like Rio
And I assure you my debts are real
I can't find the words to say when I'm confused
I travel half the world to say "You are my muse"
Versez moi l'ivresse
Réponds à ma tendresse
I belong I belong to you
I can't find the words to say, they're overdue
I traveled half the world to say
"I belong to you"
It will be you who wears the crown
And I'll owe everything to you
How much pain has cracked your soul?
How much love would make you whole?
You're my guiding lightning strike
I can't find the words to say, they're overdue
I'd travel half the world to say "I belong to you"
And she attacks me like a Leo
When my heart is split like Rio
And I assure you my debts are real
I can't find the words to say when I'm confused
I travel half the world to say "You are my muse"
Versez moi l'ivresse
Réponds à ma tendresse
I belong I belong to you
I can't find the words to say, they're overdue
I traveled half the world to say
"I belong to you"

"when these pillars get pulled down" matt is speaking of when our society crashes. which is obviously soon. "it will be you who wears the crown" he's going to use the lessons of DMT to start a new civilization. he also talks about this theme in exogenesis part 3. "i owe everything to you" is talking about how he makes his living just doing what this drug tells him and allows him to think and do.
"how much pain has cracked your soul" dmt is the room you meet God in. Matt knows God's been watching all along in horror. "how much love will make you whole" is a testament to Matt's will to do the right thing. anything, to make it right. "your my guiding lightning strike" is a direct reference to another song on the album which is completely and wholly also about DMT. its also a reference to the rapidness of it's onset (about 15-25 seconds) and the wisdom in the experience.
"i can't find the words to say" Dmt is famous for escaping the explanation of this world's words. Since we don't really go there as a society there's no language for it. this is one of it's famous little quirks that make it so hard to get a mature understanding of it. "they're overdue" is fairly obvious "i've traveled half the world to say" is about matt extensive research into all things considered zany. his love for aliens, and other conspiracies. but obviously "i belong to you" says you are the real one. cant fake DMT.
"she attacks me like a leo" often one will have not quite as blissful as an experience as one would hope on dmt. and and these instances it is often reported that they're are gnashing teeth of lions and tigers and.... well you get the picture. it is said to have come from our collective memory of being the hunted most of our human history. a history accessed through DMT. "when my heart is split like rio" so i've personally done DMT and everytime I've done it i've just been torn apart about some conflict in my life and i need some guidance. i just rip it. to me this is what this line means. "i assure my debts are real" is reference to the cracked soul and collective memory. it is also said that during DMT and NDE (near death experiences) there's a heightened sense of morality. surely he refers to this.
and finally the fact that he would come so close to saying the name of his own band in a song says a lot. "you are my muuuuuuuu(se) ooooohhhhhhh ohho ohh. right? of course he doesn't actually say it because when your classy that's just a line you don't cross. not so much a deal hear in the states, we like to flaunt our name in songs, but them brits just have a different way.
"pour me a drink" matt is telling you to do it. "answer my love" is what you'll find on the otherside...
Its a fascinating and inspiring read, and will help you enjoy this novel a lot more.
((((SPOILER))))
in the end of the novel the main character is caught disobeying the laws of the extremist communist party, and is tortured and brainwashed. He is eventually set free, and after the woman whom he once loved confesses to betraying him to the party, He feels nothing but undying love for the party's figure head - Big Brother
{When these pillars get pulled down
It will be you who wears the crown
And I'll owe everything to you}
The rules of the world being replaced by gods laws
{How much pain has cracked your soul?
How much love would make you whole?}
Wanting to make jesus feel better after his suffering for our sins, and heal the emotional wound that would have inflicted
{I can't find the words to say, they're overdue
I'd travel half the world to say "I belong to you"}
Travel half the world would be a metaphor for the emotional journey of searching for heaven and god's influence in your life
{When she attacks me like a Leo}
"she' is a person he's talking about, not to. This is saying his lover is not the target of the song
{When my heart is split like Rio
And I assure you my debts are real}
Debt's meaning sin, and resisting the idea that you can be forgiven or at peace
{I can't find the words to say when I'm confused
I travel half the world to say "You are my muse"}
The way he draws out the word Muse, kind of feels like a conclusion to all the proceeding albums. Like he's saying that whatever god or force the song was referring to was basically the inspiration for the band.
{[Mon Cœur S'ouvre à Ta Voix] (My heart opens itself to your voice)
Réponds à ma tendresse (Respond to my tenderness)
Verse-moi, verse-moi l'ivresse! (Pour out to me, pour out to me the euphoria!) }
Like Plug in Baby, it's talking about an idea or force that energizes and re-invigorates. Whatever the song's about, he takes comfort in it. It is his reason for living.
I'm agnostic, as, I believe, are most of the members of Muse. And don't believe in any of these things myself, this is just what the lyrics seem to me to be referring to. There are many things that could fit this criteria, like a father figure or some sort of role model.
The proper translation of the french is: Ah! Respond to my tenderness! Fill me with ecstacy!
"When the priests try to force him to kneel before Dagon, he asks the boy to lead him to the two main pillars of the temple. Samson prays to God to restore his strength, and pulls down the pillars and the temple with them, crushing himself and his enemies. The curtain falls." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…
About the river part, i dunno.
Ah! Réponds, (Ah! Respond,)
Réponds à ma tendresse (Respond to my tenderness)
Verse-moi, verse-moi l'ivresse! (Pour out to me, pour out to me the euphoria!)
Réponds à ma tendresse! (Respond to my tenderness!)
Réponds à ma tendresse! (Respond to my tenderness!)
Ah! Verse-moi l'ivresse! (Ah! Pour out to me the euphoria!)
There is what the French translation for the song is
"Versez moi l'ivresse"
means: "pour drunkenness upon me" - aka as "get me drunk"
and
"Réponds à ma tendresse"
means: "repond to my tenderness". 'nuff said.
