last night they said the fire had spread
then we said our prayers
and now the flames are burning me in my bed
but I just don't care

we all go to sleep in the same place
and in the morning, hope that we're all the same
just sit around like broke down cars in the lot
waiting for repairs

there you go
there it goes

well, I wish that I was as good as you
caring and trusting
and I wish that my condition was new
but I'm old and rusting

we just hurry up only to wait
add to the list of all the places we hate
I pretend like I got something to say
but I've got nothing

now I know that you stole
from the cradles they were rocked in
you took the first words that they spoke
yeah, you stole

so if I'm a liar and you're a thief
at least we both know where the other one sleeps
let's end this tonight

because you stole
from the cradles they were rocked in
you took the first words that they spoke
yeah, you stole

General Comment:this song is about how christians just wait for god to fix them, how he envies the naive for still having hope, how when it really boils down to it most things in life are meaningless, and we just rush through life for no reason - work 50 hour weeks for things we dont need etc....and the last part is about god robbing children of their ability to think about logic and realize that god doesnt exist, he steals the truth from them and also god himself says he will come like a thief in the night. so he would be the liar and god the thief lets end this tonight is like this is my goodbye letter to believing in god after this its all material

General Comment:I'm sorry, but not every Brand New song is about bloody religion. I mean, jeez! This site's awful for it. I'm expecting to go onto the Magazines lyrics and see someone claim it's about forcing/losing/rejecting faith, too.

Religion is a huge, huge thing. It's easy to see it in too many things. "Said our prayers" does NOT necessarily mean that they're religious. I'm an atheist but could still be accused of calling my other half God in bed. It just means that they couldn't do anything practical, and opted to hope for the best. The fires do not refer to Hell, I highly doubt that the list of all the places they hate is the numerous places to have incurred God's wrath, Brand New don't have a secret map that shows where God sleeps, neither are they planning on assassinating him this evening. I know most of this hasn't been suggested yet but I just felt the need to point out none of these are reasonable ideas.

As far as most fans think, Jesse was religious and now isn't so much. That doesn't make him an antitheist. It doesn't mean that 95% of the songs Brand New record are a slam against religion. "Seek and ye shall find"? Exactly what you're doing here.

Also the band said in an interview that Daisy was experimental more than anything. There's no "solid" meaning behind most of the lyrics on there.

My Opinion:This song has moved me to tears on so many occasions. It's so rare that a song can do that. I can't even put into words how much I love this band.

Song Meaning:This song is very obviously about not feeling worthy of God.

First stanza- The flames are burning me in my bed, but I just don't care.

This says that in is consuming him but, like a lot of people, even Christians, just don't care. They love God, but they can't give Him full control.

"we all go to sleep in the same place
and in the morning, hope that we're all the same
just sit around like broke down cars in the lot
    waiting for repairs."

We do nothing to try and grow our relationship with Christ, we sit around and just think that since he's God, he'll make everything work out. We all go to sleep and hope that when we awake everything will be just the same and not having to worry about anything.

"well, I wish that I was as good as you
    caring and trusting
and I wish that my condition was new
    but I'm old and rusting."

Now the story thickens, as we learn that Jesse is jealous of someone in his life that has a relationship with God he's either afraid to have, or just wishes he could obtain. He feels like nothing new will come out of it and basically feels jaded with the thought of God. Or maybe the last line could just be running from the first in saying that he/she is perfect and he is old and rusting.

"we just hurry up only to wait
add to the list of all the places we hate
I pretend like I got something to say
    but I've got nothing."

He doesn't feel like he's got anything to say to God. He feels like God doesn't listen and doesn't change things, and is just so upset and pissed at himself that he feels that way, but it's just an emotion, they don't just go away, also the first line probably has to do with paranoia.

"now I know that you stole
from the cradles they were rocked in
you took the first words that they spoke
    yeah, you stole"

Now we learn on how he takes his anger out, on satan. Satan steals us at birth because we're naturally sinful. Also I'm pretty sure the bible has a quote somewhere that's talking about the nature of man and says that the first things that come out of our mouth's are selfish cries. Selfishness is a sin.

    "so if I'm a liar and you're a thief
at least we both know where the other one sleeps
    let's end this tonight"

So Jesse is a liar (a hypocrite, trying to find God when he's not perfect) and Satan is a thief, We both know where we stand, so let's just end this. I'm not exactly sure what he's talking about ending. Maybe just the constant war of good and evil? End his ignoring God's call, End Satan's reign over humans?

That's the way I see it

General Comment:This is the best song off of Daisy, for sure. Its also up there for the top Brand New songs of all time IMO. Its so resentful and emotional in a very subtle and disguising way. Amazing

Plus I love the brushes on the snare to end the song, being a drummer and all. ;)

General Comment:I see how the abortion thing makes sense, the first time id heard it, i felt like maybe he was referring to abuse

    "because you stole
from the cradles they were rocked in"
maybe referring to children who have been abused, saying like " you took their childhood away from them "

"well, I wish that I was as good as you
    caring and trusting
and I wish that my condition was new
    but I'm old and rusting"

maybe saying, i wish that i was better, but i feel like im not because of what happened
    that was my first interpretation.
great song. top 5 off the album

    General Comment:Idk what it really means, what's the main underlying moral. But I did decide to really think about the lyrics and think up a meaning, probably not to close or right. Supposedly I'm not good at seeing deeper meanings but here I go;

With the first few lyrics I agree with some of the posts that said it's about people who just pray, and think God will just automatically help them. And sometimes - most of the time - it doesn't work out that way. But other than that... I am stumped.

Basically, these are just sentences or lyrics out of some of the verses that I tried to "Analyze".

"... just sit around like broke down cars in the lot waiting for repairs."
What I got from that is that we all have our problems, our flaws and basically we live with them, waiting for them to be fixed.

    and

"Well, I wish that I was as good as you caring and trusting."
I'm not really sure about this, but I kind of came off with the God thing. Because; caring & trusting? God is the loving God, the one who cares for us and who people trust...

I know that's a crap meaning, andI haven't even explained the half of it. But, it's all I've got, idk if it makes any sense, feel free to criticize.

General Comment:To me it sounds :

Yeah, you stole, yeah, you stole
    So if I'm a liar, THEN you're a thief
At least we both know where the other one sleeps
    So let's end this tonight.

What do you think about it ?
