Please don't say we're done
When I'm not finished
I could give so much more
Make you feel, like never before
Welcome, they said welcome to the floor

It's been a while
And you've found someone better
But I've been waiting too long to give this up
The more I see, I understand
But sometimes, I still need you

Sometimes, I still need you
Sometimes, I still need you
Sometimes, I still need you
Sometimes, I still need you
Sometimes, I still need you
Sometimes, I still need you
Sometimes, I still need you
Sometimes, I still need you
Sometimes, I still need you
Sometimes, I still need you

And I was struggling to get in
Left waiting outside your door
I was sure
You'd gimme more

No need to come to me
When I can make it all the way to you
You made it clear
You weren't near
Near enough for me

Heart skipped a beat
And when I caught it you were out of reach
But I'm sure, I'm sure
You've heard it before

Heart skipped a beat
And when I caught it you were out of reach
But I'm sure, I'm sure
You've heard it before

Heart skipped a beat
And when I caught it you were out of reach
But I'm sure, I'm sure
You've heard it before

Heart skipped a beat
And when I caught it you were out of reach
But I'm sure, I'm sure
You've heard it before

General Comment:It seems to me the first two verses are from the perspective of someone who has been dumped. They're saying don't end it, I have more to give. They then go on to talk about how it's been a while since they broke up and the other person has now found someone new.

The rest of the song seems to be from the perspective of the person who decided to end it.

    "Sometimes I still need you"
Sometimes they still miss the person

"And I was struggling to get in
    Left waiting outside your door
    I was sure
    You'd give me more"
The other person wouldn't let them in (metaphorically). They were sure they would give them more than that, but they didn't.

"No need to come to me
When I can make it all the way to you
    You made it clear"
The other person left it up to them to put all the effort into it.

    "You weren't near
    Near enough for me"
    Self explanitory

    "Heart skipped a beat
And when I caught it you were out of reach"
They fell for the person, but after the initial infatuation they realised they were too distant

Basically about someone who ended a relationship because the other person wasn't putting anything into it, and the other person saying how they had so much more to give.

General Comment:When the heart skipped a beat it was the moment that you knew that it was over. When that person left your relationship and walked out on you. It is both for him and her depends on if you are the dumper, or the dumped. Rejection101. One of the worst emotions that a human can feel so very painful and hard to shake.

General Comment:takatsch, I think the "welcome to the floor" is being used to "introduce" the new man he says he can be...in the lines before this she says "please don't say we're done when I'm not finished....I could be so much more. Make you feel like never before...welcome they said welcome to the floor" The phrase "please welcome to the floor" is used a lot at ceremonies to introduce a someone who is about to make a speech of some sort. Here, I think it's used as a metaphor of him unveiling the new man he says he can be...just a thought though...not sure what else it would mean

My Interpretation:I think this song is sad. It's about trying to convince someone who wants to end the realtionship and move on that you can still give that person something. I think it's about understanding that person isn't there for you anymore but you just can't seem to let them go. Also the lyrics "Heart skipped a beat
And when I caught it you were out of reach
    But I'm sure, I'm sure
You've heard it before" mean that the narator fealt something and that they are sure there past lover has felt the same way sometime in there realtionship.

General Comment:No, I think the lyrics is about a relationship which never happened. But both wanted it so badly. And it would have been a great relationship, cos the persons would just fit each other. But it never happened. And it was not due to that none of them didn't want it to happen, they were just so unsure about everything; what the other one wanted and if they dared to let someone in, to let the other person get to know the real you, cause that's the only way it could work. So they have been hanging on the hope that it suddenly would happen something that would change the uncertainness. Cos they want it to happen, they're just uncertain. (1st verse) Hanging on hope, that something would happen, not ready to entirely let go on that hope. (2nd verse)And this relationship between them has been going on for a while, and he found someone who gave him her heart, but he haven't given his, and he's not going to. (Sometimes, I still need you) Yeah, they need the other person to be so much closer. (3rd verse) And one of them has actually tried to get to something more, but it was a weak try, making only more uncertainness. She thought that he would meet him half way, therefore she now thinks he doesnt't want it to be more. But then there are all these little things that keeps poping up all the time which just demostrate that they should be something more. So she's hanging on hope he would do something. And he isn't sure if it is a try or if she has given up on him now that she doesn't trey again. (4th verse) This is the fuck-you,-I'm-so-over-you-phase, which shows that when people push away that's when they need you the most. (Chours) They both knew all along that the other wanted it to be more, but they were two lonely people who just didn't dare to give the other person her/his heart.

Does anyone know what this is supposed to mean?

My Opinion:One thing I always appreciate in music is when the sentiment of the melody matches that of the lyrics. This song is simple, echoing, repetitive. The lyrics themselves are not overly deep; unrequited love is something most can relate to, and in this world of free individualism, is even more common then ever. In my own jaded heart, I am moving through these motions. The chorus, say it all for me.

    Heart skipped a beat
And when I caught it you were out of reach
    But I'm sure, I'm sure
    You've heard it before

Despite the sparks and energy when we met, you were already in some future thought, but I'm sure I'm not the first to tell you that. From someone whose heart rarely skips a beat, it makes it all the harder. I'm still glad I met him though.

General Comment:i think this songs about two people who had a mutual breakup; they both regret it but never at the same time - the one always wants the other when the other doesn't, so they never do get back together and it all just leaves them with a haunted feeling of 'what if' from time to time.

General Comment:i think the problem with most of The xx's songs is that people interpret them sexually when it is more than sex it is passion and overall true love
