Lyrics for Hey Soul Sister as interpreted by Grim_Poet

Hey Soul Sister Lyrics
Heeey, heeeey, heeeey!

Your lipstick stains
On the front lobe of my left side brains.
I knew I wouldn't forget you,
And so I went and let you blow my mind.
Your sweet moonbeam,
The smell of you in every single dream I dream,
I knew when we collided,
You're the one I have decided
Who's one of my kind.

Hey soul sister,
Ain't that Mr. Mister on the radio, stereo,
The way you move ain't fair you know.
Hey soul sister,
I don't want to miss a single thing you do...
Tonight.
Heeey, Heeeeey heeeey!

Just in time,
I'm so glad you have a one track mind like me.
You gave my life direction,
A game show love connection, we can't deny-i-i-i.
I'm so obsessed,
My heart is bound to beat right out my untrimmed chest.
I believe in you, "Like a Virgin," you're Madonna,
And I'm always gonna want to blow your mind.

Hey soul sister,
Ain't that Mr. Mister on the radio, stereo,
The way you move ain't fair you know.
Hey soul sister,
I don't want to miss a single thing you do...
Tonight.
Heeey, Heeeeey heeeey!

The way you can cut a rug,
Watching you's the only drug I need.
You're so gangsta, I'm so thug,
You're the only one I'm dreaming of.
You see, I can be myself now finally,
In fact there's nothing I can't be.
I want the world to see you'll be with me.

Hey soul sister,
Ain't that Mr. Mister on the radio, stereo,
The way you move ain't fair you know.
Hey soul sister
I don't want to miss a single thing you do tonight,
Hey soul sister,
I don't want to miss a single thing you do...
Tonight.

Heeey, Heeeeey heeeey!

I have no idea what this song is about, but I love it. I'm surprised it's not more popular. Very catchy. Yay for Train!

i like this, very catchy indeed. can't think of any other meaning for the song besides it being about a girl he likes, possibly a black girl (a "soul sister") or just a corny way of saying they're soul mates

This is the best song ever!!! Definitely a long time favoritee :)
As to the meaning, I think he is just being happy because he found someone just like him. Someone who he can be himself around and someone who makes him feel good about the way he is :) it's love <3

Anyone know what Mr. Mister is referring to??

Seems to have a lot of 80's pop culture references: Soulsister (an 80's group who had a couple songs out), Madonna's "Like a Virgin", Mr. Mister, maybe even Huey Lewis's "I want a new drug" ("Watching you's the only drug I need"... maybe?), Love Connection (the game show), New Kids on the Block's "Didn't I Blow Your Mind" ("I'm always gonna want to blow your mind")

Maybe I'm reading too much into this song!!

I loved this song the first time I heard it. I love that part in the music video where he's singing 'So gangsta, I'm so thug' and how the words go all over the place. My favorite lines beside that one are 'Ain't that Mr. Mister on the radio, stereo, the way you move ain't fair you know' This song is adorable.

I realize my interpretation is probably somewhat biased towards true love.

Verse 1
At first the writer seems to make an ironic comparison about suicide. The level of depression one needs to commit suicide could be the exact opposite of the glee he feels. (I would assume the lipstick was red.)
I wonder if "moonbeam" is a perfume.
The writer feels like he's found love at its first sight; his soul mate.

The chorus seems to allude to a one night thing, but I don't know that the rest of the song is in tune with that idea.

The second verse emphasizes how much she gets him (understands him) and how enamored he is with her. The chest hair starts a very sensual part of the song. The Madonna line is obviously a reference to her song, "Like a Virgin." However, I do think there might be a bit of heavily hidden meaning here- but i'll keep that to myself.

I don't think this song is about a one night stand. The writer talks about his dreams about her.

I think he wants to remember this night, every piece of the night.

this song is about finding that girl that you are so comfortable with. a quirky, fun-loving, happy-go-lucky girl who makes him feel like he can be himself around. he's totally in love with her.

My interpritation of this song was that he met this girl who he likes a lot. Typical love song, but one certain part stuck out to me

"I believe in you, "Like a Virgin," you're Madonna,
And I'm always gonna want to blow your mind."

I saw this as she wants to stay a virgin till shes married or something (I know thats not what Madonna's song is about, but stick with me.) and he admires her for that. But he-like every guy- wants to sleep with her because he really likes her.

dear everyone. this song is about "getting head." The first verse opens that train of thought:

Your lipstick stains
On the front lobe of my left side brains.

And so I went and let you blow my mind.

Listen to the rest of the song within that context .

Taken from an interview with Jimmy Stafford, Train's guitarist, in Marie Claire magazine

Tell me about latest single, “Hey, Soul Sister.”

Pat [Monahan] wrote that with a couple other guys. He’s always heard of Burning Man. Somewhere in the Californian desert, they do it every year. It’s this whole city in the desert that gets built for a festival that happens every year. They build a huge man out of wood and at the end of the festival they burn it. Pat had never been to Burning Man, but he had an image in his head of what it must be like: all these beautiful women dancing around the fire. That was the imagery he conjured up when he was writing the lyrics to “Hey, Soul Sister.”

I think this song is basically about this guy who is really really down. Like, close to suicide. His life is crashing down, and he's relying on things he shouldn't have to. But then he meets this girl that totally changes his mind.

'And so I went and let you blow my mind.'
Instead of taking a blow in the head, he would rather let her blow his mind.
'You gave my life direction'
She gave him a reason to live.
'Watching you's the only drug I need'
He was relying on drugs and alchohal, but with this girl, he needs nothing.

This probably didn't make much sense, but whatever. ;)

"your lipstick stains on the front lobe of my left-side brains."

she's going for her master's degree in psychology and she has won regional and international modeling competitions. her lipstick stains have definately left a perminant mark on the front lobe of my left-side brains. i have trouble if i try to breathe and not think about her. of course, i also have trouble trying to breathe in her presence.

I really think it's about the artist being atrracted to an African American woman. The reason I say that is because in the bridge he says "So Gangsta I'm So thug. You're the only one I'm dreaming of." I can see that being insipred by a black woman b/c the artist says "Soul Sister" which is usually referring to a black woman. Also "The way you can cut a rug" meaning she can dance. Strereotypically, African American people are thought of as having natural rhythm. I really believe this is what the song is about=)...no offense intended.

i think it's about a guy realizing he's falling for a girl. He likes her and the unique things about her. It leaves a mark. And he likes it. He's letting her blow his mind.

"The smell of you in every single dream I dream"

"I knew I wouldn't forget you,
And so I went and let you blow my mind"
