In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
Jon Foreman- "I'm pretty sure that I wrote this one in an elevator. Tim says that the seed of it was written by the time the elevator ride was over. I don't remember that, I just wanted to have a song on the record (and live) that captured a reinterpretation of the blues. From the moment I started playing guitar I was hooked on Led Zeppelin, BB King, and Hendrix. Wes Montgomery came later. I wanted to have a simple throbbing, pulsing song on the record that epitomized the songs I played in Jr. High.
The concept of this song is fairly simple. I am trapped by myself. I am a man who is bounded by his own lusts and vices, yearning to be free of these hindrances. We are enslaved to our passing desires that are often more swayed by our environment than our own volition. Most of what we call our "choices" are simply reactions. Free thought is incredibly rare. Who can know the darkest parts within himself? This unspoken and nameless prison is the bane of the "free" world, the hole in the neighborhood. We are in the chains of debt, the chains of consumption, enslaved by our lusts, our fears, and our past. The truth will set you free but it's only slightly less scary than hell and a whole lot harder to get there. There is no outer freedom until we have chosen to be free inside.
Lyrically I feel like this song is the brother of "Mess of Me." Yearning for a life beyond what I have. Hoping for freedom. Still yearning to get there. "I had a dream that my chains were broken... broken open." I'm still running hard for this goal." 


Awesome Song. I really couldn't get the jist of this song, but thanks ninja hidden in the cheese, lol. I get the feeling of desperation from this song, but unlike other blues songs, this song is much more hopeful: 'I still believe' Trust Switchfoot to keep the faith, lol!
to me a very buddhist like interpretation on life and that what we crave traps us
When I first heard this song I thought (now this was a interpretation I had and I thought was the real meaning of the song and now I know what the meaning is). But I thought that this meant someone was trapped within hell and that he was calling out to God praying on his knees that one day one of his angels will come and save him and that hell was a infinite prison of no escape and torture. This came from 2 verses of the song. 1 was: when I try to reach above (heaven) I only heard of the ones I love (could be referencing his loved ones that passed on to heaven and he's left alone in hell to rot) 2: there's a hole in the neighborhood where the shadows fall (could be the demons in earth dragging the sinful souls of those who are deceased into the hole (gateway to hell or entrance to it all) and the shadows(demons) are falling into with the souls of those who belong in hell. There's a hole in my but my hope ain't in me at all (is now suggesting that there's no way out of hell and that god cannot get him out). I had a dream that my chains where broken broken broken open (him dreaming that the chains the devil has him in will finally be broken by God and him finally going there to free him and take him to paradise). This assumption is really incorrect but this is what I thought it meant when I first heard it
