One of us is gonna be here and
One of us is gonna be running
Off alone into the great unknown
You're not me, you're a model of freedom
All you need are your kicks when you need 'em
Come and go, caught that slow alright

With one hand off the side
We get farther away in the blink of an eye

And it's the time we waste
Swallowed into space
It's the time it takes to blow away
To blow away
To blow away

Hey, hey you, yeah you gotta be leaving,
Say what you want, what you say, say anything
No one knows just how deep it goes
We are old in your teenaged tyranny
And all you need is a hunger to feed
I've got my own secrets though, say what?

With a heart full of mess and lore
We are doomed but we wanted more

It's the ride we take
The many winged escape
It's the bough we break to blow away
To blow away
And we blow away

One of us is now retreating
You knocked me down so hard I'm seeing a thousand stars
Come out where you are
'Cause I won't ever be caught crying
And I will not be taken lying down
It blows into smoke

The time we waste
Swallowed into space
It's the time it takes to blow
It's the ride we take

The many winged escape
It's the bough we break to blow away
To blow away
It's the times we say that no one's gonna take your place
It's a mistake to blow away
To blow away
We blow away

"you're not me, you're a model of freedom all you need is your kicks when you need 'em."

it's so simple, but so perfect

she's saying that all we have to do to truly be free is to abandon things we have convinced ourselves we need.

i think this idea is confirmed when you look at

"with a heart full of mess and lore, we are doomed but we wanted more."

i think she's saying we're slaves to the idea that nothing is ever good enough.

so maybe it is a "mistake to blow away" but isn't never being satisfied just as much of a blunder?

I love this song and I love AFF and after reading the lyrics really thoroughly, I thought she was talking about a relationship. the first verse, talking about how a guy really wasn't ready for a commitment or maybe he just had to go-he was a model of freedom. It sounds like something close to a breakup when she talks about "hey, you, ya you gotta be leaving," or maybe he's moving away, kinda bittersweet. "we are doomed but we wanted more" they split up because it was fo the best, but they still love eachother.

"i won't ever be caught crying and i will not be taken lying down" she's gonna be tough through this situation and try not to be vulnerable. and finally,

**"It's the times we say that no one's gonna take your place it's a mistake to blow away" i think is the main statement in this song. When your in love you think that person is the only one. Then you break up and move on and realise, there are other people out there for you. But its okay to feel that way, your just in love. It's just a little mistake at the time- one to blow away:)

Awesome song! To me its a happy song-she is putting her foot down-saying I'm not giving up on us! I am going to stick by you and -no matter what we do hence the "swallowed into space"- meaning even if we are just chilling-were going to be together and "blow away." But-that's my humble opinion!

this is really unexpected, as icesk8ngurl said but it is totally amazing. she is so talented and i'm surprised this song isn't more popular. i love this song to the point that i went and bought it on itunes instead of getting it for free because i wanted her to get money for it =]

i'm really not all that sure what it's about but it just feels really powerful. i love it!

Nothing like what I'm used to from A Fine Frenzy. I like it. I hope I hear more stuff like this from her! Beautiful song, I can't stop listening to it.

I just discovered this song today and love it! Definitely different from her last album, but still really good.

I had to listen to the song a few times and finally came up with an interpretation. It's like she's speaking to the strong urge to give up in every one of us. It's always so easy to just let something go than to hold on, stay committed, and work through hardship. The times that we do give up is the time we've wasted and blew away. We've let that urge defeat us and give us a false feeling of freedom. This song is saying that we can fight against that urge that's always tempting and mocking us. "i've got my own secrets though, say what? with a heart full of mess and lore, we are doomed but we wanted more"- We're doomed because it's naturally easier to give up, but we want more than going thru life like that.

I see in this song that she is in a relationship with someone who wants to keep things "come and go" as he wants, but she wants to take it more seriously. I think she's expressing that being with a guy like that is a waste of time - the time spent just gets sucked into space never to return - it just blows away - there's no substance.

    My Interpretation

So I love all your interpretations…I view it a little differently.

I think she’s speaking to a friend, possibly a younger friend. And I believe the song is about growing up, moving on, moving away from the ppl you love. But she feels stuck bc she hasn’t done that yet. But wants to.

She says “you’re not me, you’re a model of freedom” and then “it’s the time it takes to blow away”. So maybe she feels like she’s too tied down or stuck where she is and her friend isn’t. Her friend has the ability to leave easier.

“And it’s the time we waste, swallowed into space” this represents how we kind of just go through the motions of living sometimes without ever making any real/big decisions.

“We are doomed but we wanted more” - we know or at least have the feeling that we’re gonna be stuck here but we want to be doing so much more. Going to new places but we just know we won’t bc we waste time living a mundane life. If that makes sense.

“It’s the ride we take, the many winged escape”- the ride is life and the many winged are people who have an easier time jumping into things, trying new things. They’re the ones that get to “blow away” and do all the things you want to do. I think “blow away” has somewhat of a negative connotation to it bc I think she’s speaking of someone close to her that’s leaving.

“It’s the times we say that no ones gonna take your place. It’s a mistake, to blow away. We blow away.”- I think this is self explanatory. It’s that promise you make to your friends before you leave. But things never stay the same which is why it’s a mistake. And then she ends it by saying that basically we all end up blowing away, moving on. Said kind of in defeat but accepting of the reality of life.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
