I brush my teeth and look in the mirror,
And laugh out loud,
As I'm beaming from ear to ear,
I'd rather pick flowers instead of fights,
And rather than flaunt my style I'd flash you a smile
Of clean pearly whites.

I've been to the dentist a thousand times so I know the drill,
I smooth my hair,
Sit back in the chair
But somehow I still get the chills

Have a seat he says pleasantly,
As he shakes my hand and practically laughs at me,
"Open up nice and wide" he says peering in,
And with a smirk he says "don't have a fit,
This will just pinch a bit"
As he tries not to grin.

When hygienists
Leave on long vacations
That's when dentists scream and
Lose their patience

Talking only brings the toothaches on because
I say the stupidest things
So if my results go south, I swallow my pride with an aspirin and shut my mouth

Golf and alcohol don't mix
And that's why I don't drink and drive
Because good grief
I'd knock out my teeth
And have to kiss my smile goodbye

I've been to the dentist a thousand times
So I know the drill,
I smooth my hair,
Sit back in the chair
But some how I still get the chills

General Comment:I listen to this whenever I go to the dentists! Makes me smile and it's got a good sense of humour to it. Adam has an incredible talent, I mean, a song about dentists so well done!? Love it, simply love it! :)

    Love the double entendre, patients/patience!

General Comment:I think part of this is about how he went to the dentist a lot just to ask for happy gas so he can sleep in his time of insomnia.

The rest he just took the opportunity to right a funny song about going to the dentist and trying not drinking and driving.

General Comment:I love this song so much! It's so much fun to sing too!

I think this song symbolizes the music industry or something in that general area
The patient with the good teeth would be the artist with a nice talent that the world loves and by going to the dentist to get it cleaned would symbolize going to a popular company to promote your talent
and the entire cleaning process would symbolize the pain and hardships you receive from the media and such but in the end you
The golf and alcohol bit would symbolize the pleasures you get from being famous but it would be hard to relax when you are partying and drinking all the time and the knocking out his teeth would symbolize the total crash of his fame...

    Well, that's my interpretation of the song ^^;

General Comment:I honestly have been perplexed by this song. I couldn't tell if it was about going to the dentist, or a passionate love affair with another man.

General Comment:I personally believe this song means exactly what it says. Adam is a nice happy person who likes his teeth but not the dentist. Thats all

General Comment:I'm sorry to change my mind, but in class i had a sudden moment of clarity. The teacher was talking about looking at yourself in the mirror- metaphorically. Instantly I thought "I brush my teeth and look in the mirror" and little alarm bells went off in my head. Looking in the mirror means examining you lifestyles and attitude. I'm not going to say what I think the song is about, this post is just something to turn people's views about this song around...please reply!

General Comment:I dunno...I don't think this is actually supposed to have a double meaning and its just about going to the dentist. Well, I think it might just be about finding the happiness in things that are unpleasant, or kind of making the best of things. So it isn't really not about going to the dentist, that's just part of it. I don't think the term is a metaphor...maybe synecdoche is the word I'm thinking of? Owl City has the best lyrics I've heard so far in the sort of electric type of music.

My Interpretation:Adam references dreams and sleeping often in his lyrics.

Losing teeth, in dreams, can represent social anxiety, fear of losing control. I think the "dentist" refers to a therapist or psychologist, and the writer's discomfort or fear of therapy.
