How the time passed away, all the trouble that we gave
And all those days we spent out by the lake
Has it all gone to waste? All the promises we made
One by one they vanish just the same

Of all the things I still remember
Summer's never looked the same
The years go by and time just seems to fly
But the memories remain

In the middle of September we'd still play out in the rain
Nothing to lose but everything to gain
Reflecting now on how things could've been
It was worth it in the end

Now it all seems so clear, there's nothing left to fear
So we made our way by finding what was real
Now the days are so long that summer's moving on
We reach for something that's already gone, yeah

Of all the things I still remember
Summer's never looked the same
The years go by and time just seems to fly
But the memories remain

In the middle of September we'd still play out in the rain
Nothing to lose but everything to gain
Reflecting now on how things could've been
It was worth it in the end

Yeah, we knew we had to leave this town (we knew we had to leave this town)
But we never knew when and we never knew how (we never knew how)
We would end up here the way we are
Yeah, we knew we had to leave this town (we knew we had to leave this town)
But we never knew when and we never knew how (we never knew how)

Of all the things I still remember
Summer's never looked the same
The years go by and time just seems to fly
But the memories remain

In the middle of September we'd still play out in the rain
Nothing to lose but everything to gain
Reflecting now on how things could've been
It was worth it in the end

General Comment:This song reminds me of a summer romance I had. I met this guy at the beginning of summer we were both back from university we spent 6 weeks together in the summer but he then he went to Australia to study for a year. In September when I was driving back to university this song was played on the radio and it just reminded me of the time I spent with him.

General Comment:My last boyfriend and I loved this song, listened to it all the time. I didn't realize it until almost a year after we broke up that it applied to our situation.
"How the time passed away, all the trouble that we gave, and all those days we spent out by the lake. Has it all gone to waste, all the promises we made? One by one they vanish just the same"
Basically how time has taken our relationship and all our promises away, but the memories made and what we learned made it worth it. "It was worth it in the end"
I think of it as reflecting back on memories and realizing that you've grown and gained maturity about the situation and it was worth it in the end.

General Comment:This song reminds me of the love of my life ... the one that ended when i didn't want that to end that way....

Anyways.. In this song the singer talks about his love with a girl .. which was the best that no other relationship

amounts to this one relationship that he had ... though its over he still has the memories and try to reach it again thorough

memories .. They both knew that they ll separate at the end and still were continuing with the relationship ... but he still

wonders why all those efforts that they have put for this relationship should go meaningless (I do :P ) ...

General Comment:This is my favorite song of his He does not have a bad song at all.
But this one means the most to me. We Would all like to go back to some time in
the past weather is to change an event or just to meet someone again or back to
a memory of a time you enjoy.

General Comment:Its funny that people want to apply this song to a broken relationship; which it has nothing to do with. (why does everyone always want read an old boyfriend/girlfriend into every song, really?) This is a song about reminiscing about youth and growing up to be an adult...in retrospect he loved his life ("summers by the lake" with his friends in particular), but always knew he was going to "leave this town". You know how you told your high school friends that you would always hang out on weekends as adults, live next door, have your kids in the same little league, etc....well he (like most people) broke those "promises" to pursue professional opportunities. He is reflecting on all this and says "it was worth it in the end".

I'm not someone that likes to break down a song so literally. But there's no lyric in this song that pertains to an old flame. Great song, though! My favorite of Daughtry - so poignantly crafted.

Memory:I relate to this song so much. I entered into one of the most wonderful relationships I ever had this summer. The last day of summer, she broke up with me, leaving me heartbroken. Now summer never will look the same without her.
