So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
I remember what you wore on our first date
You came into my life and I thought
"Hey, you know this could be something"
'Cause everything you do and words you say
You know that it all takes my breath away
And now I'm left with nothing
So maybe it's true, that I can't live without you
And maybe two is better than one
But there's so much time
To figure out the rest of my life
And you've already got me coming undone
Now I'm thinking two is better than one
I remember every look upon your face
The way you roll your eyes, the way you taste
You make it hard for breathing
'Cause when I close my eyes and drift away
I think of you and everything's okay
I'm finally now believin'
And maybe it's true, that I can't live without you
And maybe two is better than one
There's so much time, to figure out the rest of my life
And you've already got me coming undone
Now I'm thinking two is better than one
I remember what you wore on the first date
You came into my life and I thought, "Hey"
Maybe it's true, that I can't live without you
And maybe two is better than one
There's so much time, to figure out the rest of my life
And you've already got me coming undone
And I'm thinking
Ooh, I can't live without you
'Cause baby, two is better than one
There's so much time, to figure out the rest of my life
But I've figured out with all that's said and done
Two, is better than one
Two is better than one
You came into my life and I thought
"Hey, you know this could be something"
'Cause everything you do and words you say
You know that it all takes my breath away
And now I'm left with nothing
So maybe it's true, that I can't live without you
And maybe two is better than one

I'm finally now believin'
And maybe it's true, that I can't live without you
And maybe two is better than one
There's so much time, to figure out the rest of my life
And you've already got me coming undone

Two is better than one

Yeah...I don't view this song as a breakup song at all. I think it's a song about a person's realization that they are in love...and that being together is starting to sound better than not being together. Young love is really difficult and I think when people first fall for each other, they're often in denial for several reasons (we've all been there.) I believe this song is about the breakthrough you have when you realize "You know what? I really am in love with this person."
The lyrics are pretty much self explanatory - They remember every little details of certain encounters, they can't stop thinking about each other...and they realize maybe they do need to be together.
Oh, "And now I'm left with nothing" is not a reference to being alone...it's a reference to him being out of breath. "You know that it all takes my breath away and now I'm left with nothing." Nothing = no breath.
i agree with your interpretation, i know how it feels and makes sense.
