Hold onto chance
Lest we bleed ourselves
Save for the pets
They're the loneliest

Put into jars
We'll save this earth
Put into jars
We'll save the earth

[Chorus]
We can't both become the same
Pawn that's made to fall
Oil that tastes like blood
Stole the summer scent
From me to you
You're stabbing me through you
You're stabbing you through him
And betting most of
This world
We'll add enough of the world

Steal from yourselves
It never felt so good
And feed from their hand's
Confuse by opposites

Put into jars
We'll save this earth
Put into jars
Keep safe this earth

[Chorus]

Feeling manic for a day
Depends on the trends
Depends on the surface
If the sun never sets

[Chorus]

This world
We'll add enough of the world
Is the main thing you'll shout
Till the bitter end

Into jars

My Interpretation:I agree with that fact that their lyrics are open to everyone's interpretation. It really brings out the Tool influence in the lyrics, Maynard James-Keenan was the same way, profound but vague.

Having said that, here is my interpretation. I like to think this song is about human beings' willingness to try to save the world through preservation instead of curbing the negative acts (pollution, material excess, greed). Put what we might lose into jars instead of insuring that it is there in the future. Add everything into jars so we can claim that it's not lost though in reality it is. Extinction, obsolete technology, fossil fuel's ("oil that tastes like blood") being possible things that we will need to save through jars instead of changing our ways. Rock On Pete!

General Comment:Here's how I hear it and what it means to me, personally:

"Hold onto chance, lest we bleed ourselves,
Then safe from the past, they're the loneliest,"

*Clinging to the past is like self-preservation in that it may bleed you but also provides safety from the present or future which is a lonely existence!

    "Into jars,
    We'll save ourselves,
    Into jars,
    We'll save this earth,
    Into jars,"

Again, preserving something that has already died to keep the remnants of what was.

“We can't both become the same,
    Pawn that's made so far,
All of it tastes like blood,
    Stole in summer,

    * Though this song could have so many different meanings and is why they are so great, I see this having more to do with communication and fear which holds us back from living. Most likely between two people caught in some bizarre triangulation. They cannot both become the same pawn in a game that takes mental agility to win because love is not a game and for it to be treated as such is a deeper indicator that it is more so a communication barrier. The blood that they taste is eachother’s and the probability (chance) for such a circumstance to occur is monumental in many different ways, possibly.

    "Sent from me to you,
    You're stabbing me through you,
    You're stabbing you through him,
    And that emotion,”

    * Here is where we learn about the reasons why they bleed themselves. The girl (I assume), perhaps is/was clinging to a past that never even existed. Instead, where she thinks her pain is derived from one person, it is the pain of another that is really causing her own pain. The meaning is obscured much like the entire situation. Whatever was “stolen” one summer was actually sent from one person, not reciprocated by the girl who thought it was sent from another, which causes pain between the only one and the girl. The third person never actually existed…it was only between the two the entire time! Very complicated!

    "This world,
We've had enough of the world!"

    * This is the first time that the connections are realized. All of the confusion, restraint and guard are being recognized as being in vein. The “world” represents all of the outside influences/factors which deter one from full self-actualization. It is often easy to consider a situation in one narrow way no matter how intricate it actually is when you are unable to expand beyond yourself and what you experience as your individual reality. Sometimes there are forces beyond what you may understand, but it still exists and persists, just takes a different angle and perspective to really see the situation in full light.

"Steal from yourselves it never felt so good,
    Feed from the hands,
    Confused by opposites,"

    * Again, love is delicate and is not a game and where it is always easy to blame another for “stealing” from you, often times it is ourselves who are responsible for the pain. You may feel afflicted by the doings of another when it's really yourself who inflicted pain internally and upon others. Confusion ensues when the situation is revealed as being opposite from what you believed to be true. However, there is comfort and freedom in understanding/discovering the truth.

    Chorus

"Being mine for a day depends on the urge,
Depends on the surface the sun never sets,"

    * Sometimes urges are much greater than what is seen on the surface; there is always a deeper field beneath where the sun never sets because the deepest urges are never cast in darkness and are always a motivational force. What appears on the surface such as the claim of ownership reveals a deeper need to identify and be acknowledged. What are belongings? What we own; does it not belong? And just to express the reasons why I love Chevelle so much is because of the line "the sun never sets" is perpendicular to "stole in summer sent" because it sounds the same, yet opposite. Much luv!

    Chorus

"We’ve had enough of this world, is the main thing you shout ‘till the bitter end…into jars."

    * Finally, what the world offers is superficial and false and instead of clinging to what you perceive as true, he urges us to dig deeper to find the truth, and…that…is worthy of preservation!

General Comment:The lyric "We'll add enough of the world" is actually "Will had enough of this world" Lmfao. It's about my friend's Austin, Chris and I choosing the fate of the world. =P

General Comment:About how we're destroying our planet slowly, and it's the corporate leaders that are forcing I use the term lightly everyone has a choice it's just the ladder of our governmental system, pollution stands out to me. just a thought.

General Comment:I interpret it as mankind's desire to encapsulate life and the environment, that it might be more harmful than helpful by retarding Darwinism. For instance keeping animals in zoo's makes takes them out of their natural environment and strays them away from their natural instinct by relying on humans.

My Interpretation:In my simplistic opinion, this song mirrors George Carlins take on the initiative to "save the planet". Fortunately (and unfortunately) the planet isn't going anywhere... WE ARE. You can save the Earth (collect it in jars if you think it helps) but when we are done killing each other over land, resources, politics and religion; stealing from each other; or letting each other die (famine and disease) the planet goes on. The song obviously doesn't get into that much detail but some subtle hints are there. We have to either get along (to keep from killing each other) or plan for our future somewhere else ("Croatoan" reference from the video might be a hint if you know North American history of 1590's) because we aren't destroying the Earth, but our chance to survive on it.

My Interpretation:This Is What Comes To Mind When I Listen To This Song...

Hold Onto Chance, Lest We Bleed Ourselves:
Most Humans Have The Tendancy To Abuse Things Besides Themselves Until They Feel That They Are In Danger.

We'll Save This Earth, Put Into Jars:
We Could Save The Earth By Putting It Into Jars, In Other Words, Cutting Off Human Interaction With Earth.

We Can't Both Become The Same Pawn That's Made To Fall:
The Human Race And The Earth Shouldn't Both Become The Pawn That's Made To Fall
(If Humans Keep Up There Actions, They And The World Will Be No More.
Save One By "Putting It In A Jar")

Oil That Tastes Like Blood Stole The Summer Scent:
This Line Seems To Be Talking About Human Interaction With The Earth.
(The Oil Tastes Like Blood Because It's Coming From Inside The Earth, And It Stole The Summer Scent Because The Oil That We Do Take From The Earth Is Mostly Burned, Polluting The Air Taking Away The Scent)

    From Me To You
    Your Stabbing Me Through You
    Your Stabbing You Through Him
And Betting Most Of The World
We'll Add Enough Of The World
(Saying That Our Actions On The Earth And To Ourselves Are Determining The Outcome Of This World)

Steal From Yourselves, It Never Felt So Good
(Everything Done Wrong To Eachother And The Earth Doesn't Affect Human Emotion Negatively, But In Doing This They Are Only Hurting Themselves)
Collect Feed From The Hand Confused By Opposites
(Humans Get Everything That They Need From The Earth-Collect Feed From The Hand
Confused By Opposites Because Of The Major Difference Between Good And Bad People)

One Thing That Really Catches My Ear About This Song Is That
Throughout The Song And At The End Of The Chorus And A Few Verses The Phrase
"We'll Add Enough Of The World" In One The Verses The First Line Is
"From Me To You" Which I See As "I'm Telling You Something Important"
So We'll Say For Complication's Sake That Every Line That Isn't
"We'll Add Enough Of The World" Is The Writer Of This Song Speaking To
The Human Race, And Immediately After There's A Reply From Mankind Saying
"We'll Add Enough Of The World" Ignoring The Writer's Words And Warnings.
Then The Writer Gets Tired Of Trying To Get Mankind To Listen.

So He Says "We'll Add Enough Of The World"
    Mocking Them.
Is The Main Thing You'll Shout
    To The Bitter End...
    (Mankind Will Ignore Warnings Until
    It Is Too Late.
    Mankind Will Ignore Their Wrongs
Until "The Bitter End" Is Right In Their Face...

    That's How I See It

General Comment:Its a mockery. Whoever said it was about saving the earth in little jars was right, but its done in mockery of the 'save the earth' movement. Same concept as Muse's 'Supermassive Black Hole'

General Comment:I think it talks about general people. How people react differently through things that happen in the world. like when he says
    "Feeling manic for a day
    Depends on the trends
    Depends on the surface
    If the sun never sets"

i think it means how people feel insane one day and just do what they feel like going on a killing rampage.

My Interpretation:Reading the lyrics I have the general feel that the song really talks about how the major corporations view everything in the world. They are willing to push their leaders to bring war so they can get their precious oil to make money at any cost. They are willing to disregard the earth and do anything for the mighty dollar and don't really care what their actions do to the earth. (one chemical plant has what they call the 'rainbow river' running through the center of the plant. it is rainbow colored from all the chemicals they dump into it)

At the same time the corporate leaders are not only killing us (you stabbing me through him) but they are also killing themselves and don't care. (you stabbing you through him)

The main thrust then is that if corporations continue to do what they want we will be able to save what is left of the world in jars.
