So much I thought I'd have to say
Though I try to speak, my meaning strays.
We can't avoid the facts that brought us here.
I have come to say goodbye.

The lies I try to tell with my own eyes;
An act of pride, a willful compromise.
Please understand how torn I am
When I walk away from here.

I lament the moments we won't share.
If I am far too sentimental, I apologize.
Please understand this is who I am
And who I'll still be when I've walked away from here.

You know I'm not unkind
When I say in the future,
The past is just the past.

No going back,
No change of heart
But this is now,
Time will not differ.

My thoughts(?) betray, so easily confess(?)
How long I'll wait here after you have gone.
Nothing ends(?) but I don't believe that now
Please don't walk away from here.

I went alone and I remember days.
Nothing will change a single fact(?) of who you were to me
Oh, come what may, forever to the end
I find it so hard to let you go.

And hush now, let it go now
There's no need for sad goodbyes.
Hush now, let it go now
I know it's time to go.
Time to let this fall from my hands

General Comment:I'm in a very similar situation right now... and this song helps me tremendously. I believe it to be about a man who loves a woman, but he realizes now that his love is one-sided, and that though there is hope, the time has come to let this fall from his hands and move on.

He doesn't want to let go of his hope - he wants to hang on forever, to be with this person, to spend his life with them, but there is too much between them, whether it be that they just don't love him in return, or that the circumstances surrounding their relationship make it difficult for one or both parties, and their relationship is really no relationship as such.

It's the pained goodbye of a man to his best friend, and the person he loved. Moving on to the future - the past is just the past, and there's no going back, and as difficult as he may find it to let go... he has no choice.

    Heartbreakingly beautiful.

My Interpretation:I got a weird impression while listening very closely to this song one night. At first it would seem to be about someone learning to let go of a deceased loved one. But then, take a closer look at the lyrics.
To me this song seems to be sung by someone that is already dead in an attempt to console his grieving friends. When he says, "Hush now, let it go now, there's no need for sad goodbyes" he sounds less like someone who is in mourning, but rather someone who is being mourned.
All of the words about moving on can be interpreted from two different points of view. One, obviously, is the surviving loved ones must learn to move on with their lives, but the other seems to be the deceased. He is accepting that he can't be with everyone he knew, and that he must try to believe that moving on into the next life is the best thing he can do. He's letting the world he left behind 'fall from his hands.'
Everyone can interpret the song however he or she wishes, but this idea, to me, is much more powerful because it is a means of comforting real people that have faced a heartbreaking loss. It also feels like it fits better with the overall theme of the album, from it being otherworldly (faith).

Song Meaning:The recent advent of time travel has lead to interesting phenomenon whereby travelers often visit their recently bereaved lovers. Unfortunately, due to the perturbations in the space time curve inherent with time-hopping, one must minimize their time spent in the past lest they eliminate themselves vis a vis the grandfather paradox. VNV Nation, ever the reluctant futurists, are clearly aware of this development and I think this is what they mean here.

General Comment:The third stanza requires a correction that completely changes its meaning... the first line should be "I lament the moments we won't share", not "... once shared".

General Comment:The misery of separation told from a very broken yet idealistic man. This is such a heart wrenching song.
