Are you having trouble finding sleep at night? Or does your lack of conscience tell you Everything's all right? I trust your good intentions That you're watching over friends You must think that I'm crazy If I don't see through that grin So tell me what your best friend knows That I don't know Tell me why you talk me down Wherever you go You're a saint, you're a queen And I'm just another boy without a crown Tell me why you sell me out everywhere you go I just wanna know what your best friend knows So vindictive, you'll say anything you like The smile you fake, the steps you take You know you never could get it right And talk is cheap So make believe your secrets find the grave It's too late, you gave up Your last chance to walk away So tell me what your best friend knows That I don't know Tell me why you talk me down Wherever you go You're a saint, you're a queen And I'm just another boy without a crown Tell me why you sell me out everywhere you go I just wanna know what your best friend knows You stand a little too tall, say a little too much Gonna bite that know it all tongue You tried a little too hard, now I'm calling that bluff Big plans are coming undone That's just typical, you're so cynical Couldn't have me, I didn't want you You're selling me out to the girl I can't afford to lose You stand a little too tall, say a little too much You're gonna bite that know it all tongue You tried a little too hard, now I'm calling that bluff Big plans are coming undone That's just typical, you're so cynical Couldn't have me, I didn't want you You set yourself up to lose So tell me what your best friend knows That I don't know Tell me why you talk me down Wherever you go You're a saint, you're a queen And I'm just another boy without a crown Tell me why you sell me out everywhere you go I just wanna know what your best friend knows What your best friend knows I'm never gonna let this go What your best friend knows

General Comment:I always thought the "Tell me what your best friend knows" part meant that he was seeing a girl to get to her best friend, but now, and upon closer inspection of the lyrics, I think he's trying to get to know a girl better. After all, her best friend will know more about her than anybody else, and he wants to know her inside-out too. Like, he sees past the facade she puts up to the world, the "fake smile" etc. It's a nice song, I like it. Awesome live :)

General Comment:In my opinion, I think the song's about this guy and basically, he likes this girl, but her best friend is extremely popular, and she wants him. But because she can't have him, she talks shit about him because she knows that she'll never have him. And yet, this girl's best friend is seemingly oblivious about it, and he just wants to know what all this girl has told her best friend about him.

    Love love love this song.

General Comment:So.. I think this song is about a guy that likes this really popular girl.
She likes him to, but maybe he isn't as cool as all her friends? So she puts him down and tries to hide their relationship from everyone. She keeps telling him she likes him and that she will tell her frieds about them later "So vindictive. You'll say anything you like." but she never does. He finalt gets tired of trying to be with her and tells her she is a liar and that unless she tells her freinds then he doesn't believe her "So talk is cheap." She kinda listens to him but ot realy; she tells him she will tell her friends. . but like always she lies. So now he decides he is going to call her out and let her best friends and everyone else know. "Stand a little to tall, say a little to much. Going to bite that know-it-all tongue. You tried a little to hard now I'm calling that a bluff, Big plans are coming udone."
So he has just told her friends and they are all asking her and are mad because she has been lying to them. They are telling her she tried a little to hard to hide it and now they can see trough her lies.
"That's just typical, you're so cynical. You couldn't have me. I didn't want you. You set yourself up to lose." So now she is begging him back and says she really doesn't care what her friends think but he just laughs and tells her this is exactly what I woud expect from you.. it's typical.. and he tells her she is pretty much a dirty liar. He tells her she can't have him .. because he doens't want her. She set her own self up for that fall.

This is just a thought. .

    Tell me what you think??

My Interpretation:idk I believe this song could be told from 2 totally different perspectives

    a-

    This guy [Most Likely Alex]
didn't like a girl and was trying to get her best friend to tell him what she thought about him
[Tell me what your best friend knows; That i dont know]
But the girl is very sarcastic [or cynical in this case] and always sells him out or makes him look bad
But something about her makes him keep coming back for more and ends up liking her [the girl not the friend] but not liking that he likes her and she is "screwing it up for herself" by making him look bad
[couldn't have me; I didn't want you; you set yourself up too loose]

    or
    b-
    Like someone said earlier

A girl liked him but he didn't like her
so she obviously got annoyed and started talking crap
    about him and everyone knew.

General Comment:I just love these lines
"Are you having trouble finding sleep at night?
Or does your lack of conscience tell you
    Everything's all right?"

It makes me giggle every time I listen to this song. It's very catchy, and i love it. And basically I think everyone has the right idea.

General Comment:I think this song is about that the guy is'nt into the girl anymore and the girl figures out and tells her bestfriend bad things about him, but hes already figured out

Song Meaning:It's about a girl who likes a guy but the guy doesn't like her; he likes her best friend. So the girl keeps talking crap about him to the best friend so that the friend won't be interested and the girl can have him.
Key line: "Couldn't have me, I didn't want you, You're selling me out to the girl I can't afford to lose."

General Comment:Dude, this song is just about people who talk shit.
More specifically in the storyline of the story, it's a girl he wanted
but he ended up turning her down.
    [Couldn't have me, I didn't want you]
And she ended up talking shit about him to everyone,
including Lisa [the girl I can't afford to lose].

    It's a very high-school song. I love it. (:

And it's not about him dating her best friend.
The line "tell me what your best friend knows that I don't know"
is about rumors because the first person someone gossips to is usually their best friend.
So he's basically being sort-of sarcastic saying,
"So, what's the latest dirt on me, girls? I'm dying to know."

It makes more sense that way if you think about it.
I love this song, though, because I get my name put in people's mouths all the time for no reason
other than I'm not a whore, so they make shit up saying I am.
So I think it's fantastic to have something this relatable.

Poor Alex. Sick of rumors. ):
The Home Alone reference is boss, btw.
