Lyrics for Shining Down as interpreted by Fiasco777

Shining Down Lyrics
(Matthew Santos)

Look up in the sky
Now Look up in the sky
Look up in the sky
You thought I was down
You thought I was gone
Thought I wasn't around
I left you alone
But look up in the sky
Just look up in the sky
See that I'm everywhere, everywhere
Shining Down on you

(Lupe Fiasco)

Well well,
Is that our little author?
Coming back, humming his hymns a little altered
Your attention; put back on the flow like a department of water
Take it off the door like little Walter
Chess? Yes. Baby, I'm Jerry Lawler
Rebel with a cause; outlaw with the laywer
Judge, jurry like a loo; Rap name Lupe but my daddy named me Warrior
This is his memorial.

(Matthew Santos)

You thought I was down.
You thought I was gone
Thought I wasn't around.
I left you alone
But look up in the sky
Just look up in the sky
See that I'm everywhere
Everywhere
Shining Down on you.

(Lupe Fiasco)

No, I ain't that nigga trying to get a liquor line
When I be scripting lines; want this petition signed.
It says I'm sick of dying; sick of this prison time
I really love my people; I'm sick of pimpin' mine.
Now if we autotune that shit
We can hear the songs from that opera groomed fat bitch
Tellin us not to pursue her, just to shoo her like a blacksmith
We're trapped, and moving round in circles like it's chap stick
And that's the same encircled way of thinking that we chat with
We'll rap this, around your head like a bandanna's fabulous
Used to wrap his hat's with, Rather being F.E.D.S. instead of National Geographics
We'll I'm not having it now.

(Matthew Santos)

Look up in the sky
Now Look up in the sky
Look up in the sky
You thought I was down
You thought I was gone
Thought I wasn't around
I left you alone
But ook up in the sky
Just look up in the sky
See that I'm everywhere, everywhere
Shining Down on you

(Lupe Fiasco)

So I say hello and this is for the third time
To everybody out there who ain't ever heard of mine
And if you have then you know you ain't ever heard lying
Lu don't move. No cow herds, you only heard lines
Not a facade cherisher, I'd rather have the scars
I don't idolize America, I'm dancing with the stars
Uh huh, All of them? Ya, they are too.
You look up and you see us Shining Down on you

(Matthew Santos)

You thought I was down.
You thought I was gone
Thought I wasn't around.
I left you alone
But look up in the sky
Just look up in the sky
See that I'm everywhere
Everywhere
Shining Down on you.

Shining Down on you.
Shining Down on you.
Shining Down on you.

"no, i ain't the nigga trying to get a liquor line"
the dopest line in the SONG! because Diddy's got ciroc and Jay-z's got armadale, which are liquor labels.

On the line "Not a facade cherisher id rather have the scars" The definition is to a facade is A False front. What you see. Not the whole story or whole answer

So im assuming thats going with the old line "what you dont know wont hurt you" but Lupe would rather know and get hurt then not know. Idk If thats right but thats the first thing I thought of.

The line, "Judge, jurry like a loo; Rap name Lupe but my daddy named me Warrior"
maybe says loop instead of loo?

Also, this verse,
"Well well,
Is that our little author?
Coming back, humming his hymns a little altered
Your attention; put back on the flow like a department of water
Take it off the door like little Walter
Chess? Yes. Baby, I'm Jerry Lawler
Rebel with a cause; outlaw with the laywer
Judge, jurry like a loo; Rap name Lupe but my daddy named me Warrior
This is his memorial."

I believe he is talking about himself here. He is saying people are ready for his comeback and mrawesome, I assume the Jerry Lawler reference is about how he's ready to tackle some things and point out differences. He himself is the rebel, going against the grain of rap, and if people want to sue he's got a lawyer handy (maybe metaphorical.)
"This is his memorial" could also be metaphorical, or it could really about making his dad proud.

"No, I ain't that nigga trying to get a liquor line
When I be scripting lines; want this petition signed.
It says I'm sick of dying; sick of this prison time
I really love my people; I'm sick of pimpin' mine.
Now if we autotune that shit
We can hear the songs from that opera groomed fat bitch
Telling is not the pursuer just the shoe like a blacksmith
We're trapped, and moving round in circles like it's chap stick
And that's the same encircled way of thinking that we chat with
We'll rap this, around your head like a bandanna's fabulous
Used to wrap his hat's with, Rather being F.E.D.S. instead of National Geographics
We'll I'm not having it now."

I'll try and break this one down line-by-line.
"No, I ain't that nigga trying to get a liquor line" -tpain?
"When I be scripting lines; want this petition signed." don't know who?
"It says I'm sick of dying; sick of this prison time," t.i. or lil' wayne?
"I really love my people; I'm sick of pimpin' mine." Kanye or lil' wayne?
Sounds like Lupe is hating on the autotune, which does sound gay (in some instances) and people should stop using it because it's overrated.

"We're trapped, and moving round in circles like it's chap stick
And that's the same encircled way of thinking that we chat with"

The same shit is regurgitated and used again, and it's boring so we need to change our ways, because talking about pimpin, sellin smack and hoe's isn't going to last forever.

Just my 2 cents

I believe this is just a general statement that Lupe is back, that he never went away, and that he is so far ahead. 1/15 shines down over the game, which is ridiculous and autotuned out.

I think he says "tellin us not to pursue it, just to shew (shoe) it like a blacksmith."

"Judge, jurry like a loo," also could be Lu?

And it's "tellin us not to pursue her, just to shoo her like a blacksmith"

The Jerry Lawler line, Jerry Lawler was on old pro wrestler, his nickname was the king. Also refers to the chess-piece. I feel like a tool for knowing that. These lyrics are sick and the sound is just dope. Lupe's back.

"You thought I was down
You thought I was gone
Thought I wasn't around
I left you alone
But look up in the sky
Just look up in the sky
See that I'm everywhere, everywhere
Shining Down on you"

I have come to another conclusion. The chorus could mean something like this:

"You thought I was down
You thought I was gone
Thought I wasn't around
I left you alone"
Could mean that he is referring to a God of some religion and that mother nature is finally kicking us back in the ass. He is saying, "you've forgotten about me, now it's time I shall bring change and let you remember that I'm still here."

So,
"look up in the sky
Just look up in the sky
See that I'm everywhere, everywhere
Shining Down on you"

This is lyrically insane:

Coming back, humming his hymns a little altered - I'm takin you to church

We can hear the songs from that opera groomed fat bitch - if you took the first far bars of the 2nd verse, autotuned them it would destroy autotune because no one can do better than that...also goes with "tie it like a blacksmith" - to end it (autotune)

Lu don't move. No cow herds, you only heard lines - are you kidding me??!??! Thats a quadruple entendre:

Lu don't moo, no cow-words you've only heard lines
Lu don't moo, no cow-words you've only heard lions
Lu don't move no cow-herds you've only herd lions
Lu don't move no cowards, you've only heard lions

Unreal

http://sketchesofmysoul.blogspot.com/2009/07/lupe-fiasco-shining-down-breakdown-you.html

really good break down of the song in the link.

excerpt from link: "The lion/lying theme throughout the song is also a subtle dedication to Lupe's father, Gregory Hamza Jaco ("Hamza" means lion in Arabic and the last thing Lupe's father told him was "not to lie, tell Wasulu to tell the truth". He doesn't hide nor accept facades as he'd rather have "the scars" (which also a play on the word "disguise")"

"Now if we autotune that shit

He's saying that if he, Lupe Fiasco, started using auto-tune, the death of hip-hop would be nigh. It ain't over till the fat lady sings, but when she does...

Never listen to Lupe, friend kept tellin me too, finally did and uncovered this. The man's quite talented. Like the 2nd verse, my interpretation:

Verse 2:

No, I ain't the nigga trying to get a liquor line
(A rapper promoting something to poison your mind, clowd your judgement. Trying to profit off of you)

When I be scriptin lines, Want this petition sign
(Trying to get the L.A.S.E.R.S. Manifesto signed. Start a movement. Something positive. Trying to free your mind. Don't want your money.)

It says I'm sick of dimes, Sick of this prison time
(Ideas in the Manifesto)

I really love my people. I'm sick of pimping mine.
(He's doing this out of love)

Now if we autotune that shit,
(Self explanatory)

We can hear the songs from that opera room fat bitch
(If we can use autotune, we can broaden our minds a little further and listen to some opera)

Tell em' it's not to pursue it, just shoe it like a blacksmith
(Not tellin you to be an opera singer, but try it on & mold it like a blacksmith into something you can use, something you crafted. Something original & one of a kind.)

We're trapped, and movin round in circles like it's chap stick
(What rap is doing right now. Moving around in circles recycling ideas from each other. Taking something that was innovative and interesting at first when used by few artists (autotune, by Teddy Riley from Blackstreet in the 90's & later on revived by T.Pain) and that was fine. Then everyone started doing it, using each other's ideas instead of branching out to something completely different like the example he uses here, opera and pulling inspiration from that to create something wholly new.)

And that's the semi-circle way of thinking that we're chapped with
(Hip Hop is a pair of crusty chapped lips right now and they are dry and cracking and we need some new chap stick, some repair.)

Well wrap this around ya head like the bandanas Fabolous used to wrap his hats with
(If you can follow a trend started by a rapper, like putting bandanas around your hat, then follow this rapper. Follow Lupe & the L.A.S.E.R.S. Manifesto. Wrap your head around what he's saying. Think.)

Rather be in F.E.D.S instead of National Geographic's
(Rather be in F.E.D.S. magazine instead of National Geographic. )

F.E.D.S. Magazine:
"Antoine Clark started urban true-crime magazine FEDS in 1998. Although FEDS appears to glorify crime by regularly profiling well-known killers, kingpins, and pimps, Antoine insists that FEDS’ mission is to act as a deterrent; only criminals whose lives have been destroyed by their crimes are featured on the covers."
National Geographic: A reputable magazine where your acomplished work is displayed.)

Well I'm not having it, naw.
(He's not having it!!!!! Naw)

Basically: Think outside the box. Be original, positive, spread love, aim high, set goals, reach for them!

(Well well, Is that our little author?)

He is referring to himself. Its interesting because he referencing to himself as an author compared to a rapper. Pointing out his heavy focus on his writing and lyrics. And maybe he doesn't want to casted as the typical rapper. Hes more than that. Saying your an author, shows you have a different goal in mind.

(Coming back, humming his hymns a little altered)

Very creative line. Basically it means Hes back and doing what he does a little differently.

But he takes a unique approach with his choice of words. Hymns are song of praise or songs dedicated to thanking to God.
He also has a unique word play with the word altered. The word altered means to change but I believe he uses this word because it sounds familiar to the word Altar. Altars are an elevated place or structure before which religious ceremonies may be enacted.
He continuing his trend on religion influences in this line.

(Your attention; put back on the flow like a department of water)

word play on the dual definition of the word flow.

(Take it off the door like little Walter)

Not sure about this line.

(Chess? Yes. Baby, I'm Jerry Lawler)

he starts the line as though he is being questioned about chess. He responds by saying hes Jerry Lawler.
Jerry lawler was a famous wrestler with the nick name “The King”.
The game's chess most important piece is the king. Without it, the game cant go on.

(Rebel with a cause; outlaw with the laywer)

This line reminds me a lot of the We are lasers manifesto. Hes setting up his own persona in this line.
Rebels are people who resist or defy a generally accepted convention or authority. He says he has a rebel with a cause. He saying hes resisting generally accepted convention for a reason. For an ulitmate cause. That cause is talked about in the manifesto.

Great example of a Juxtaposition
Outlaw are fugitive from the law; nonconformist. But hes saying he a outlaw with a lawyer.

(Judge, jurry like a loo; Rap name Lupe but my daddy named me Warrior)

Wasalu means warrior. But hes talking about how hes dad instilled those values in him

(This is his memorial)

This song is dedicated to his dad.
